As a structural engineer that was involved in damage assessment and repairs post-Northridge and Nisqually quakes, I've long kept an eye on the USGS seismic activity sites. There's this thing called the Juan de Fuca fracture zone along the coasts of WA, OR and N. CA with the Cascadia subduction zone as part of that. On Google Earth, the fracture zone looks like saw teeth off of our coast. Both are part of the larger fault lines that border the Pacific Ocean so when large seismic events occur way over in Japan, the energy can and does flow up along those fault lines to the Kamchatka Penninsula, Aleutian chain, W. AK and down into our neighborhood before rattling the craton plates of the lower 48.

That said, there have been literally thousands of smaller magnitude (<2.5) tremors from Vancouver Island to N. CA since the end of January. 758 just yesterday as the subduction plate grinds westward under our west coast.

PNSN

Not making any predictions but you may want to keep some basic supplies handy if stored energy from all the recent movement is suddenly released in the form of a big shake....

I thought the smaller quakes, while they could be signs of a larger, upcoming event, could also be viewed as a good sign that the fracture is releasing pressure in a series of smaller movements, rather than one large one. That is to say, that the smaller quakes are releasing the stored up energy. Are you indicating you believe the smaller quakes are indications of movements in some areas but not others, leading to what could be a major shift in one or more specific areas? Not saying I know anything, just asking ..... because I know I don't

Don't forget to stockpile non-fiat silver and gold so you can throw it at people when the Apocalypse comes.

It is better than throwing wadded up fiat dollars... but essentially the point of having it is to preserve wealth... it is better than dollars. You can only have so much food/supplies before it becomes too big to store. If things ever get that bad I’m finding Rich G’s bunker and there will be plenty to go around.

In all seriousness though, hopefully everyone keeps some basic supplies in the event of a major earthquake. People in the Rainier valley should also be prepared and familiar with evacuation routes and have a plan. It is due for an eruption and the fuse is getting shorter.

When the Apocalypse comes, I hope people don't actually think trading shiny rocks for food is a viable option for feeding yourself! Those shiny rocks aren't intrinsically worth any more than the paper the fiat money is printed on...just like the paper money, they're only valuable because someone thinks they are.

You can't eat, kill food with, or re-populate the world with shiny rocks.

Have a stockpile of food and water, gas for your generator, and someone(s) on hand that you may enjoy being bunkered with.

Fish on...

No, I got your point, but there is no such thing as paper, or metal wealth if the SHTF...no one will care about either.

Canned food and water...yes.

Let's try to keep this thread on topic gentlemen....

Back in the early 2000's the Structural Engineer's Association of Washington (SEAW) worked in collaboration with other organizations to come up with this publication--

M6.7 EQ Scenarios

In it, IIRC, the worst case scenario was that pretty much everything west of I-5 would be a total loss due to the Cascadia fault quake(s) itself and resultant tsunami as evidenced by the far-inland sand lenses bearing remnants of saltwater creatures.

The SEAW website is a good source for actual post-event reports and "preparedness" resources (as if one could ever be prepared for such a thing) here.

Look at the reports on SEAW's website and extrapolate the photographed damage to your own city or neighborhood. At a minimum, one should have a few days supplies of food and water. If structures are unsafe to occupy (seen it post-Nisqually and definitely post-Northridge as I was at ground zero and the surrounding places assessing damage while y'all were watching on the news), having access to your tent, stove/grill and other camping essentials (mountain money) may make those trying days easier for you and yours to endure. Also, know where/how to promptly turn off all utilities to your home to avoid fire/water damage. Think zero electricity, food, potable water from a tap, phones, etc.. Make a plan and communicate it to your family members. It is very cheap insurance should such an event ever become reality....

Then I guess I made a wise choice buying property on the Getchell Plateau. It will one day be Puget Sound waterfront property! Just think of the rents I could charge, that is after they remove the bodies.

Neither do I for certain other than the subduction plates have been constantly moving/grinding along for a couple months now.

However, by way of example, if you hold out your left hand palm down in front of you and slide your right hand, also palm down over the top of the left, and your right hand finger tips hit your left's knuckles and start to roll back under themselves, that is pretty much what is happening along the Juan de Fuca fracture zone/Cascadia subduction. When you start to resist that sliding motion by flexing your right fingers and suddenly let them slip back over the top of your left hand, that sudden release of stored energy is a simplistic example of what you see on Google Earth along the Juan de Fuca fracture zone that looks like saw teeth off our west coast and the likely source of past tsunamis here.

563 tremors yesterday.

Thanks for the info, Driftin’. The M6.7 EQ Scenario is an interesting read from what I’ve seen so far. Although smaller in magnitude, it is a shallower quake and the fault line runs directly underneath Seattle. I’m looking forward to reading more of it.

Almost equally likely is Mt. Rainier erupting, and will require a similar level of preparedness for people living close by and in the valleys. Thankfully I live above the valley on the hill with a sweet view, so hopefully a good westerly gets to blowing once the mountain erupts to keep the ash away and so I can watch the lahar smother everything through Orting and Puyallup while I kick back with a case of beer. Both towns are shitholes anyway so I’ll be glad if they’re suddenly gone. Just hope nobody dies. Kidding of course, but maybe not, I don’t know. I’m a smug prick, apparently.

We keep a couple months supply of food. Plenty of guns and ammo and knowledge of where the local deerz like to hang out. The garden is going strong as well. Generator is ready and always have plenty of gas just in case. If it ends up not being enough, I will search for a Richie G’s bunker or share/steal whatever is owned by the Marxist left commies since they believe there is no such thing as personal property and everything is owned by everyone.

According to the scenario, hillsides and valleys run a higher chance of sustaining more structural damage. I might be in trouble. At least if I die shill-she and the other Internet E-Thugs will be happy and nobody will be bothered by the bet welcher anymore.

Speaking of shaking things up, fish prince is gone, Arvid gone, either stay or don’t. Should be an automatic ban if you come back.

And to be somewhat topical, it’s interesting that in 2021 predicting a major earthquake is still not even close to fruition.

It's interesting to think of how many people there are completely blind to what could come of this event. It's an ill feeling to imagine how much chaos would come of it.

Gonna leave a lot of grown men sucking thumbs when it get's to shaking.

It will test a lot of people in different ways, for sure. Good opportunity to be prepared and to help out others in the community who will be in need of support.

People couldn't help others when they thought they were gonna have to use less asspaper. If something serious ever happened everyone would crumble in a few weeks. Everyone will take from who they find weaker, especially if there isn't a fear of law enforcement.

Good point. You can at least share some TP with the neighbors. It’s the little things. If you have 100 rolls of TP you really going to be much worse off with 98 rolls? I had plenty to share because I’m generally stocked well on the basics. It will definitely be a test of industriousness and innovation, though.

Years ago I was commenting on how much I hated cats. I can not stand how they go into their little box, then jump on the kitchen counter or the dinner table, running around tracking whatever they walked through over the counter. My friend thought about it for a moment, then commented, " maybe that's why gay people love cats. They don't mind a little poop in what they eat."

Dogs roll in whatever horribly foul thing they can find, get some biting action in and then come inside and try to tongue punch ya so...

Get a pet rock. They come in handy all the time, don't swim too well though.
