Yes, I already know how most of us feel about this glamorous piece of toilet paper. However, I still subscribe. Not for info.,just to see pictures of other people enjoying our outdoors. However, thumbing through the last issue, I see pictures everywhere of people holding up nates with their hands jammed in the gills!! What the hell is up with this?? One guy you can see his finger coming up out of the fishes mouth!! Yeah, yeah, the caption says the fish was CNR'd. That's great, but get your hands out of the fishes gills, people......

We spend way to much time fighting with each other here about what we post about rivers and who is getting what when we have guides like Rich putting out trash every time to just get his name in a paper. He calls himself a pro but the fish his client has in his hands is dead now for sure. But wait two weeks and he will have a new story on the Nooch with anouther pic of a big fish that help in killing due to poor handeling..Lets get off each other and when we see him on the river lets let him and others like him know how we feel. Sorry about blowing up but enough is enough. and the pic made me mad.

Backlash....ya beat me to it.
I bought F&H Lies this morning on the way to work and was thoroughly pissed by lunch. There are two very prominent photos of fish that will not survive yet the captions read C&R.
Truth is...they were probably bonked.
I am going to email the rag and ask that they refrain from putting C&R under any photo that shows improper handling..regardless of what a guide or submitter says.
Absolutely disgusting..

Got my issue on Friday and noticed the same. It's ashame that the editors don't pay a little more attension. So instead of venting your anger and frustrations on the board. Why don't you let them hear about it. I'll do one better here's the website www.fishingandhuntingnews.com and the editor is Joel Shangle which is also a good friend of Rich Mercado. That is why he gets all of his pictures in and the big stories. I've tried to get my pictures in the magazine, because I know my clients would like to see there face in the magazine. I also know they wouldn't be handling any natives either. I've tried to contact Joel in the past with no response. I guess you have to take them fishing for that. Just a thought. Good Luck!

I thought you guys may appreciate the letter I just penned to F&H News-
Hey Joel-
I know...let's map the Wynoochie again! There aren't nearly enough people on this already overcrowded river. Let's invite all the novice oarsmen without even mentioning the only real hazard on the river (the spillway) and how to avoid rolling your boat the first-time out, since it only happens once a year on average. Oh, I know... you can even display a wild buck bent in half with old Russ Wyman's fingers crammed up it's gill plates so he can "release it". Pictures like that should be stamped "returned to sender" with some kind of form letter proclaiming the stupidity of the subject at hand!
Please feel free to cancel my current subscription, keep the rest of my issues and if you have the guts, explain why to your publisher.
Sincerely,
Jody Durant

Hey Dream,
Been there, done that. I penned the letter shortly before originating the thread. Glad to see I'm not alone in being appalled by this crap......

How about the picture of the "33lb lingcod caught off the Edmonds fishing pier" two issues ago. I thought there's a 40" upper slot limit in the Sound? This monster looks at least four feet long.

I say how about pushing some of the blame to the bozo's giving the magazine all the information. Those maps and " where to fish columns" are from people who have one thing in mind $$$. Lets all fish the smallest streams in the state for the natives this year(the previous issue). Maybe you can catch one of the 100 or so that return to it?? WTF is up with that?

I'll have to agree, it's one big rag mag. I'll have to add this though. How many of those pictures are rerun? Most of those pictures are at least 2-5 years old. Heck, some of those nate steelhead pics are probably from the days when all rivers were legal to keep them. Also, you ever notice they will have an article say on the "Hoh", yet they have a picture of two guys with this caption "These kings caught on the Humptulips are simliar to the ones you'll catch on the Hoh". You mean there are NO pictures anywhere of someone with a Hoh king? It's like they use the pictures of their buddies (like someone else had stated). I rarely ever buy an issue. I've bought a couple map issues, but that's about it. I've found even those were inaccurate, or just reprinted articles.

I would never subscribe to it. It's a waste. It seems the "experts" they have write some of these articles have no idea what they're doing, or have caught one fish doing it, so it's a proven technique.

Just burn em, they make good fire starters..

Steelheader69 your right ,I've noticed that repeat use of pictures; gave up on subscribing to the rag back in the early 90's. And when they call you to get you to resubscribe they're just as bad as these telemarketers that keep calling you to buy something. Maybe if they we're giving away free Lami or G Loomis rods I'll subscribe again, not!

The trueth is that most peole think they know how to handle fish when C&R. but they don't. the obvious one like the gill grab and putting neted fish in the boat are the ones we all know we shouldn't do but how many people think you need to help a fish back to life by sliden it back and forth in the water. a big lie. you do more harm than good. as soon as you touch that fish you remove it's protective slime. now it will begin to grow fungi and when it gets in the gills you have a dead fish. so by swishing it around in the water the fish don't have a chance. how would you like me to grab you by the feet and jerk you around in the water untill you take off. The right way to do this is to hold the fish by the tail (with a cotten glove) on both hands with the other hand flat under the fish hold it and face it in the current now let go slowly. if the fish can stay upright then everything is good. you touch the fish very little and it is upright. the fish don't have to take off hard as long as it can stay up and not flip over it is good. now for another big fish killing move when you handle a fish by the tail and put yer other hand up behind the head never squeez it. their liver is very sensative and if you apply any presure it is a dead fish. I have seen several fish handled this way (and I might say, even pics on this BB) and those fish are as good as dead. you will know what I am talking about when you see them. so keap it in mind if you gotta handle a fish for pics or what ever don't try and bring it back just put it back and make sure it don't turn over. if you pick it up use a flat hand and even roll the fish on it's side a bit.

I agree with you guys on this rag, and I think we have to remember that they're in business to make money. One way to change their editorial slant, in addition to letters of complaint is to target advertisers. In a sense, any company that advertises in this publication is condoning the editorial content--which in this case seems to be a catch and kill mentality. Cancelled subscriptions and complaints to advertisers will get 'em where it hurts--right in the wallet.
