Made the trek to Forks area rivers before the big rain and had some success on jacks and only a few adults. Wife got a nice 14lb.hatchery buck.

My question is this. If you hit a hole with active jacks is it resonable to think that there are some big ones in with them and continue working it or should we have skipped to the next hole looking for bigger fish.

Another on the same line. Do the jacks hold in same water as adults.

Is there some technique that targets adults over jacks.

We were pullin plugs in the deep holes and using eggs under bobbers .

We had a blast. Wife is ready to go back even with the 12-14 hr drive. If we only had more vacation days.

thanks

Eggs was the problem. For Silvers, me and the guys I fish with never throw anything but hardware. We dont catch many Jacks on the hardware but get are fare share of the adults. And yes the adults and jacks generaly hold in the same places out here although sometimes you will pick up Jacks in steelhead water.

Some people will disagree with the eggs thing but I can count on one hand how many good days ive had with them out here for adult silvers.

silvers less than 20" and chinook less than 24" are considered jacks.

Thanks rich. Of the 2 hookups on hardware one was a dark nook that came unbuttoned and the other almost got me horse whipped with a fishing pole. A 10-12 lb. steelhead that the wife hooked(her first steelie )and some incompetent boob of a boat handler(who will be unnamed) managed to break off on the anchor bracket. I got the boat backwards on her.opps it was ugly. The Doc said it was not the first rod hanle he has had to remove.

I don't get many jacks, and I use eggs, plugs and hardware. I get plenty of big fish. I tend to move, looking for visible adult fish, and then I hit those areas hard. That would support the theory of move if you are hitting jacks.

When I fish Searuns, which I do a lot, I have noticed that little fish and big fish will not be near each other most of the time. I think the big fish chase the little ones off. Also, steelhead will push the cutts out. Different species, but maybe the behavior is similar.

Some interesting observations on your part.
A couple of questions for you.

By spotting fish do you mean rollers or actually sightfishing.

The few fish we saw(none rollers) we saw to late and had spooked then. Do you work at spotting holding fish in low clear conditions ? I used to try working fish this way when I a kid on Oly area rivers. Never had much luck. Dad wasn't much on fishing so I have had to learn it on my own. Unfortunately I am a very slow learner.

Thanks for the insights.
