Abu Garcia is making a barebones reel using "older" technology-- no magnets, no thumb bar, no "instant anti-reverse". A friend at the factory sent me one to play with, and I'd like to convert it to selective direct-drive. It used to be possible to get this done at a number of places, but I don't know of anyone doing it now. I thought of calling both John's in Everett and Ollie Damon's in Portland to see if they could, but thought of trying the board first since you guys would probably know of anyone else.

For general info-- there are two retro reel series, the TGC and the Star series. The TGC has a 5000 size (same capacity as the 5500) in both right and left hand and the 4000 and 6000 sizes in right hand. Suggested retail is about $50.

Corins rod and reel repair in chicago 773 631 5202 they have more abu parts than anyone in the country... I was told by ollie damens that my reel was unrepairable, Corins had no problem! I have had reels serviced by ollie's and corins. Corins ultrasonic dips all parts twice and rebuilds.... you think you have a better than new reel when you get it back! $24.00 per service plus parts! for an old abu guy well worth it!
