I used a dink float the other day out of a package of two I got at the store. I put the line through the top, then through the two holes on the sides, then through the bottom. Then I put a rather large split shot on about a foot up from the hook. My question is, every time I would cast and make a drift, the float would stay on its side, instead of being straight up and vertical. It is supposed to sit vertically in the water, right? How come it did this and how do I fix this problem? Maybe not enough weight for it to sit up straight? Thanks.

Actually ... I don't like that much lead on myself Parker. The reason why is sometimes you'll get such subtle takes (especially when fishing some really soft water), that you'll only get a rocking motion of the float and not a full under the water pull-down .. thus I like mine riding higher. I use just enough lead to get it upright.

To each his own wink

PS - KB ... I think my %$#@ sinks laugh laugh laugh , how do you get yours to float??????????

You need to put the line in at the top, wrap it twice around the dink and then through the bottom side hole[ only once around if you use a rubberband]. Use enough weight to stand the float upright. If you don't want to use that much weight, use a smaller dick.

Hi: Dink floats come in three sizes the smallest is about3/8"diam 6"length This float handles up to 1/2 oz of lead. When the float is properly weighted and set for depth it should drift downstream with about 2" above the water at an angle of 30deg off the vertical. If it rides any deeper it is hard to judge the angle. This angle means that your bait or lure is just sliding along the bottom in the fish zone. If the float rides vertical it needs to be slid up on the line to lengthen th distance to your lure. If the float rides at too flat an angle it means your bait is dragging too much on the bottom and is likely to hang up.
Other sizes of dink float will handle 3/4oz and 1/12oz of lead. Choice of weight depends on your equipment and on the current speeds of the water you fish. Its worth reading Dave Vedder`s information on the John site .

My buddy has one of these, hand carved(imagine that) out of balsa wood. Nice looking bobber, although smaller than my personal...um hmmm....float. Does get a lot of laughs floating upright out there, although you have to wonder what exactly the green and red is on the tip of it.... laugh

Ya' know Mr. Garcia, using a smaller dick is never a good idea. I think that the answer may lie in attaching two lead balls to the bottom of his dick float to maintain that upright stance. The extra weight will allow his dick float to slide up and down along the water line. I've also heard that the motion of the float could even be of greater importance then the size of the float. But that's probally something other fisherman say to keep your feelings from being hurt? rolleyes

Don't handle your float to much....I heard it's bad on your eyes? Good luck getting your float upright. :p

My preference is for wood but seems there's a few who like the softer foam when fishing? Maybe RT would like to start a comparison thread? :p
Just my .02 cents worth.

So, let me get this straight ... the thread, not my 'float'.

- Gooose likes his woody.
- Bob get's his up by using lead.
- Jerry uses a smaller dick.
- 4salt can't get it up.
- TM's wife seems to be a pretty good float fisher.
- Dr. P uses Viagra to float fish.
- Trick has leads balls, and bad eyes.
- Ryan pleased a lady at work with his small 'float' (imagine that).
- And then Coot; holy cow dude! You bone up on this stuff in the John? eek I guess more than a few of us did that - but at a much younger age than you are now. And you inform us the smallest one is 6". Geez Stew is going to take that really 'hard'. It's OK Stew, Dr. Ruth says it doesn't matter. ... Gooose, I don't think I have a thread to compare to this. laugh

You're right Steve it's not how long your float is it's how deep it goes under. BTW "Mr. 80%" it also a matter of circumferance laugh

Oh gawd, a typo! I should have known I'd get this much sh!t when I made my FIRST typo. I'll just KEEP IT UP and not change the title so all you pervs can continue your d*ck smack talkin' or whatever your doin'. I will be no part of it. BTW, mine was 4 inches, not 6. The dink I used a few weeks ago, that is. I don't prefer "hard wood", as you guys call it. It just seems to me that it might get damaged awful easy. I think I'm going to like fishing these limp floats of mine in shallow, bush filled holes. It really is kind of fun! Well, thanks to those who replied seriously. I'm not sure which of you did?

On a serious note, I'm guessing then from some of your guys' replies that my problem is I'm not using enough lead to get the float to sit upright. I really don't want to use any more lead than I was-would just be overload. Maybe I should just try some of those cork floats I bought and forget about the dinks. confused

KG: try some of the clear oval shaped floates. paint the top half white with spray paint. Fill half or less with water. They float upright unless you are dragging bottom or a fish has taken it.

Learn by using float in shallow water where you can see jig. Watch what happens when the jig touches bottom to the float.

you don't have to carry any lead. Just fill with water. Run line thru tube and wrap around match stick a couple of times and push into tube.

Want a slider, tie a bobber stop, add small bead then float. Use a swivel and then a short piece of lighter line that can break off if jig should hang up. This saves the bobber.
