I was thinking of floating the John Day River from Twickenham to Clarno. Has anybody out there made this float before? I was planning on making a two day trip out of it and staying on the river. Is this float a good two day float if the river flow is at about 2000cfs?

I think you can make that float in 2 days with the cfs that is running. I think a first nights camp would be at Burnt ranch rapids and then on down to coffin rock. I guess you are going on a scenic trip. The Bass fishing will be off until the water drops and warms up a bit. Usually by the 2 week in june it is in prime shape for a small mouth bonanza. I usually do this float in 4 days 3 nights leasurly camping and hard fishing. Lots of neet stuff to explore along the john day. Be respectful of property rights, much of the river bank is private.

Thanks for the info. You mention a first nights camp at burnt ranch rapids, but that would make for a long float all the way to Clarno the next day wouldn't it? I was thinking of trying to get a little ways further than Burnt Ranch the first day. Do you think this is possible?

I won't actually get on the water until Saturday, and will also need a place to camp Friday night. Do you have any suggestions? I saw that there was a state park up the road from Twickenham and was thinking about camping there, but would rather camp away from a campground if possible.
