Went out to Sekiu this morning, got on the water at 4:00 and we had our two kings at 5:00 am. we got one 15# lost two kings and got one 17# all right at the bouy next to slip point. Not hot we hooked the only fish near us. We went out in 500 feet of water and tried to get some hatchery silvers but only managed of about 4 pounds. we released 7 wild ones from 3 to 8#.

Kings closes tomorrow evening so thats your last chance. Definately not hot if you are in the right place at the right time you can do OK.

Heres an example of some Sekiu dinks this year this looks to be tne norm from what ive heard.

There's nothing wrong with that nice pair of chromers. How ever, maybe some day they will let the week end warriors have a better chance at them.Sekiu is one of my favorite places to fish, just can never get the time off during these 2,000 fish quota's.Good luck,

Nice fish! So is it unsportsmanlike to go up there and catch and release? I plan to go up there in September when the silvers are thick, but may be interested in one more trip for cnr kings and hopefully a hatchery silver or two. When do you figure the main rush of kings is? Already gone by?

ET-

Im far from an expert on fishing Siekiu or the salt for that matter. I hitch a ride with someone that knows. There are some people on this board that can help you. Dogfish knows his stuff.

Nice fish for the smoker or the grill. I have yet to catch a king but I did land a 20 lber and a 15 lbr last week for my fishing partner. Lost the pic of the 20 lbr when we tried to load it. Haven't fished Seiku yet but a buddy wanted me to fish it with him. Will miss out on the kings.

Nice fish Rich. Hard to throw back fish like those right?

Here's my Sekiu report for the opener. We went up on Sunday for a little practice. We put in at 1:00 pm in delightfully calm water. Set the gear in front of the caves and on our first pass C&R'd a nice high teens fish, 18 or 19 pounds. Made 2 more passes and C&R'd 2 more nice high teens fish. Went in for some dinner at 4:00. 3 hrs, 3 fish.

Went out after dinner and in 3 hrs, C&R'd 6 fish between 15 & 25 pounds. 2 over 20 and one over 25. BEAUTIES!!! So, practice day was a blast. 9 fish, some big ones in the mix, great day.

We used herring and flasher combo's in addition to all the other stuff. The herring combo rig was the killer. The other stuff worked too, but the combo rigs rocked in comparison.

Started the next morning in the same troll area and boated an 18 pounder first thing. BAM! Then it got a little slow, 2 more small fish that morning, C&R'd 'em both. Punched a 14 pounder that evening. C&R'd a couple more small ones too. Punched a couple of nice fish, not too bad of a day.

Next morning, a 20 pounder first thing, BAM! And then it got slow. rolleyes Couldn't punch out the second King that day.

Yesterday morning, we went to the Slip Point and Moussilini Rock area. First pass, 3 fish, punched out a 15 and a 10 by 6:05. Lost a couple of nice ones. Headed back to the dock and hit the road early.

99% of the fish being caught were in the teens. Some nicer ones were out there, but seemingly few and far between. We hooked up some nice fish in 4 days up there and they were very representitive of what I saw back at the dock, mid teens to low twenties fish. Our biggest was a nice pig, 25+, but hooked on the wrong day. It was good fishing, but you needed to be working your best stuff right on the tide changes for the best chance at success. That's where we put the hurt on 'em, right at slack tide and on the change. Had a couple of BAM, BAM back to back fish 3 or 4 times. The tide was fishable, but close to being a bit too much. Almost every fish was hooked trolling with the tide at 2.3-2.5 mph. Several were hooked while trolling in a zig zag pattern.

Too bad it's such a short little season, it is a great place to fish. I love it!!! smile

Rich,

What I mean is...keeping a 15 pounder vs. C&R'ing it so you can keep fishing for bigger ones.

We C&R'd some nice fish hoping to do better. It's harder to C&R when fishing is slower, and a 15 pounder is a fine fish. Like I say, hard to toss one that size back in.

I know that personally, I tend to get a little greedy when I see those 30+ pound slabs back at the dock. I guess for me, the big thrill about Sekiu is that anyone that fishes up there has a legitimate shot at a big hog. That's what I dream about when I'm fishing up there.

I released 6 or 7 kings every morning the four days it was open. Some of the hottest king fishing I've seen in a long time as far as quantity. It took all of five or ten minutes to hit the first one each morning before the sun came up. 150 to 200 feet of water and sixty pulls out with a cut plug. It was like being in a school of silvers only they were kings.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

ET,

Judgment call. If I was fishing herring and landed one like Rich has there.....it would depend on how the fish was hooked. If it took the bait deep and was showing any blood, I'd feel obligated to bonk it. If it was hooked in the jaw, and wasn't bleeding, I'd most likely turn it loose and hope to hook up with a bigger one.

When the silver fishing is hot up there, we don't even use herring, and go to a single barbless.....that way you can catch fish until it's stupid, and not have to worry about them getting badly hooked.

You'll have to make that call yourself. wink
