Two spinning reels in a row have cut in by the roller (on the bail) causing the line to get torn up. One was a shimano sedona and the other was an abu garcia. Has anyone else experienced this? If not what reel are you using that does not do this? Glow

Send the ABU back to the folks at Spirit Lake, they will fix or replace the reel for you. This is the parent company for ABU, Berkley, Fenwick and a few others. Go to pure fishing If you just bought the ABU, send it in with a letter. If you have had it for a while, send $10-15. You'll have a new reel within a week of them receiving it. They have great service.

What kinda line are you using? I fish mostly Shimano's,with an Okuma also. I have never had any problems with either brand.

I used 18-pound TUF line on my Shimano Spiress, and line put a cut/groove into the plastic molding just before the roller. The line would then get stuck in that groove and not return to the bearing. Since then, Shimano has redesinged this section of the bale with metal instead of plastic. They may send you a free part (do a web search and call them) or you could get a new bale at a parts shop, such as Ollie Damons.

A D POSE,
Send you reel back to ABU, they will turn it around quicly. I haven't had many issues with my ABUs, except after many years of usage

I use maxima and izorline so i don't think it is the line. Thanks for the replies. I'll try and get ahold of those people you talked about.

It happened on my Shimano also. You gotta get a new part. Eventually the surface wears down and the grove forms. I use it in the salt so making sure the roller bearing is working helps...

My shimanos did the same ... switched to the quantum energy's that were all metal in that area. They've finally worn out (my spinning reels make it about a year in boat use) and am now gonna try the Daiwa Luguna's ... there is some plastic there, but it appears to be much smoother and harder material than what was previously on the shimanos time will tell

Hey Bob,
Have you looked into the Shakespeare Intrepid 2000 spinning reels? 4 ball bearings, front drag, and priced at about $25. Robbo is using them, and he seems to like them. I have a couple of 1000's for ultralight trout fishing and IMHO, they're pretty sweet little reels, especially for the money.

I have had the same problem with my reels. I use five minute epoxy to cure there problem. Carefully build a slope from the bail to the roller bearing. Do not get any epoxy on the roller bearing. This fix causes the line to slide right to the bearing so it not wearing on the plastic anymore.
