I keep my trout rod in the back of my truck year round. I haven't used it all winter long, my question is this: Should I replace my line because it has been exposed to the sun for so long, or does it even get old just from sitting in the reel for so long? confused

When in doubt, change it out. You never know when your next cast will be the biggest fish of your life.

It would have to be toast by now.

If the line has changed color from when you originally bought it, or the finish of the line has changed then I would say trash it.

Be safe and change the line. It's bad enough to loose gear, but gear and the fish at the same time is terrible.

Trout rod, eh?

Well, if you're just using it for trout and panfish, I don't think you'll have to worry about breaking off, but if you're gonna use it for bass or something, then I think you'd wanna change it. Also, if you got 6-8lb test on your spool it may be better to change it than take a change. Frankly I don't see the need to change it unless you're gonna be fishing in an area where you stand a chance to hook into a fish larger than a pound. Sunlight really does weaken mono, but if you're using good quality line you can still land fish, trust me, i've done it.
