I crossed at Blaine last summer. On my return, U.S. Customs required me to produce my passport. This happened to a friend of mine a month later. If I were you, I'd phone and ask what the current requirements are.

Bigone, I crossed the border in the first part of March of this year. I didn't think they were going to let me back in without a pass port!! The Border Guard was a real a-hole and gave me a rashion sheit. A drivers license and birth cert. was not enough for them. I'd have a pass port if i was you.

Getting into Canada is easy. Answer a couple of questins and you're good to go. Getting back is another matter entirely. If you don't have a passport, you will be pulled out of line and sent into the immigtration building. You will have to listen to a ration of s$%%&t while the immigration officer types your info into the computer. You can use a birth certificate but it must be certified.
How do I know? Take one guess.

I've always got it going in, never coming back. At one point a friend and I had been stopped 12 times in a row. Be it Victoria, The Truck Stop and even Scwartz Bay. Either Customs (blue shirts)(no worries) or immigration (white shirts)(no fun!) and a few times, both!
We used to joke, I would say it was my buddies Eyebrow (he only had one going all the way across) and he would say it was my long hair and beard.
We were never turned away.

Proof of citizenship, either a valid passport, or state certified copy of a birth certificate, photocopies are not accepted. These copies can be obtained on line at vitalcheck.com.
Proof of identity, either a valid driver's license or govt. i.d. card that includes a photo and physical description, everyone 16 and older.
A child with an adult who is not a parent or guardian needs special documents, check immigration.
For driving trips a non resident inter-province liability insurance card, from your insurer is needed.

What a bunch of bull ****!! Do these people have any commen sense at all? I don't know about you, but I do not fit the physical description of e terrorist.
Pre 9/11, you could go too and fro with nary a problem. A couple of questions, and you are on your way. The way it sounds now, they think thay need to shove a microscope up your **** to see who you really are.
What could be wrong with just a drivers liscense? Sure it could be fake, but so could a passport!!
Give me a break.
And while we are at it, lets make the ten year old kid take his shoes off at the airport, while the baggage screener falls asleep!!!!

As Gutz mentioned stay away from the booths with guys wearing the white shirts. These guys are immigration and most often not to brainy. Stick with the blue shirt Customs Inspectors and 90% of the hassle will be taken out of the equation. I've gotten to and from Canada with a certified birth certificate for the past 8-10 times without a problem. Just about time for a Fraser fishing/Kokannee beer run! BD

Jerry G:
Don't know if I'll make it up there in May, I got Sitka in 3 weeks so that is making me lazy to make the long trip up. However, June is a different story, I'm sure the army on the Sky will encourage me to wet a line on the mighty Fraser.
I'll keep in touch.
