I used to work timing and scoring for USAC and was involved during the 1992 to 1995 practice and qualifying for the indy 500.
I'm not sure what on-track activity is planned for the weekdays this week.
The big deal is parading up and down 16th st outside the track all night the night before then camping in front of the gates for the opening on Sunday morning.
Lots of beer and rednecks. Don't take your wife/girlfriend unless she likes to kick redneck ass.
I worked Flag & Communications for the SCCA and Skip Barber events at IRP.
I would guess that there are some USAC support races at the IRP oval. Good facility and only a few mi west of the IMS.
You are likely to see better racing at IRP and it is more spectator-friendly.
If you frequent the Midwest and like motorsports, the CART weekend at Mid-Ohio is one of the premier events of the circuit. Mid-Ohio is like a state park with a natural terrain road course through the middle of it.
You can camp all weekend and it has some of the best spectator sections of any motorsports venue.
Generally nice people and a very informed fan base. Excellent racing.
Of course, if you just watch for the wrecks, there's always NASCAR.
Real racers turn right.
