So my buddy and I were talking last week and we decided to manipulate the salmon life-cycle in our own backyards. On one end of your lot (must be at least a couple acres) have a fresh water pond that is constantly being chilled by those things that guys use to chill water. (Dont' know the technical terms) Connect that fresh water pond to a tiny river that goes back and forth for the equivalent of a couple miles. The stream would connect to a larger body or saltwater on another end of your lot. Here's the genious idea ....Raise salmon fry in the fresh water pond and let them naturally migrate downstream to the saltwater pond. After a couple of years they return to the fresh water to spawn. How cool. Am I truly an idiot or am I on to something? That's right fellas - Cuthroattosteelies = genius

Turn the idea into a class project and get all the kids to do the digging...then you would be on to something..

well lets see. I seem to remember a Monroe area property owner doing just that on his property and being very succesful at it. The state sued him and were in the process of making him tear it all out and threatening to send him to jail and take all his property. Did'nt get their permission apparently. Do'nt know where the case stands right now. Remember: THERE'S ALWAYS A LAW AGAINST IT!

With the proper permission of course. I may be crazy but I'm certainly not THAT stupid. Anyhow, I can guarantee that I'll never do it. Just a thought. P.S. These fish wouldn't be for the BBQ, just for the pleasure of observation.

So what'cha gonna feed 'em once they get to the salt? You're gonna have to start some type of herring hatchery also. And what do herring eat? You're gonna have to raise that too. By the time you're done figuring out the ecosystem that supports the Salmon, you'd be better off just digging a ditch all the way to the Sound. Sounds like all you need is a case of beer and a good shovel. Go for it. And keep us posted on your progress,

Hey Cuttie,
Great idea!!! But if the govt. doesn't like the idea, you could always do it indoors...Just connect a bunch of aquariums together.... make the biggest one salt water and there you go!

Why not just use streamside incubators? They do petty much the same thing! Then all you need to do is to get WDFW to cough up the eyed eggs, and you will achieve pretty much what you had wanted to do. The trick is getting enough clean cool water to supply the incubators. Now that would be a great project for your school or class to do!

Hey, this is not a school yard for good spellers, so don't worry about it! We got a few "do- gooders" that like to make issue with others who do misspell a word or two, but they have their own "hang ups" so don't loose any sleep over it! I write tons of stuff, and I make lots of spelling mistakes! We get what you are trying to say, and that is what really counts! Most guys just make the correct edits to their posts and no one knows the difference! You will learn the trick soon! Cowlitzfisherman
