Have used Shimano Stradics for years, but not impressed with the new versions. They don't seem as smooth as the old ones, and the line roller makes a grinding sound. What are other comparable reels that hold up well to Salmon and Steelhead? Thanks for any info!!

Take a look at the Okuma line of reels. They are a GREAT reel for the money. I have a couple of Okuma's,and I really like them.

The Fin-Nor Lumina in a pretty good real for the price. Nice smooth drag and looks good too. I bought mine at sportco and it came with a free 8 1/2" graphite rod.

For bigger spinning reels, Daiwa gives you the best bang for the buck with the Jupiter Z series. Want to catch sturgeon on a spinning reel? No problem. Jigging in the salt? No worries at all. Don't want to pay an arm and a leg? This is the reel you want.

Really, it is one of those rare reels that are inexpensive without being cheap, if you know what I mean.

I use the old Mitchel 300. The new ones aren't as good but if you find an old one, then it has to be the best spincaster for the river and salt. beer

I really like the Okuma reels too. The Avenger 30 is inexpensive and casts like a dream. Matched up with with 8-12# rods, they make a perfect steelie catching combo.

Give 'em a try fishy hello

If you don't like the new Stradics, then stay with the old models. They're still available online at some places, also check out eBay. They're truly great reels. I also like Daiwa emblem models, although some are quite pricey. I look for Made In Japan for sign of quality.

I agree completley with people that say go with Daiwia. They make good reels and I have never had problems with mine.

Anyone know if the new Mitchell 300X is any good? I know that the oldie was a goodie and a standby for some fishermen. My dad bought one just cause of the cheap price, but now that i've heard so many rave reviews about the okumas, it's got me thinking....
