Well with the help of the informative video section Bob has here I have practiced and practiced the baitloop. I have one good out of about every 4. That's with 4/0 hooks and 20lb test. I still suck with 1/0 and 10lb test.

Question: Video says 19 loops the first time and 5 loops the second. Is this standard for strength or something or is this just what the example has? Is it ok to vary the loops for the size of hook and line or is this affecting it's strength?

There is no "standard" however the 19 wraps for the first step is good because it gives a little more length for the loop and causes it not to close as tightly as one created with fewer wraps. This permits a snug loop around your eggs without cutting thru them.

I actually use 20-25 wraps and have found it far better than 5-10 wraps.

As far as the second part of the wrap goes, you need enuf to make a secure knot and Ive never had a problem using 5.

So the video gave you good advice. Keep practicing and you'll find that it becomes second nature after awhile. I think the key is to keep constant tension on the wraps at all times and of course to never overlap the wraps.

Finally, doing your own is far cheaper than purchasing pre-tied hooks. Good luck!

For the first day trying I think I am doing well. I cut the barb and snipped the tip of the sharp hook for a practice hook. I poked myself too many times already.

I was doing this more for homeade corky and yarn. How do you keep eggs in the loop? I do have cured eggs but have yet to use them. That was also a trial and error on my part. Turned out well but havn't caught a fish yet with them.

As far as the amount of loops around the hook, it depends on wether or not I plan on holding eggs or yarn. If I plan on fishing eggs I'll usualy use between 19 - 25, but if I am fishing yarn I'll usualy only use about 5 - 8.
