Mine comes from my college days. Studied Japanese for a while. It is a very loose translation of "the Bear"

Kuma=Bear
De=very loose preposition of "The"

Used it because I love(d) to hunt bears.

Mine was given to me by my parents for unknown reasons. I didn't come up with anything clever because I was in a hurry to sign up and get some info and just never got around to changing it. I also like that if you see me out there, you already know my name and can call me that. Now, as for boat names I'm thinking I'll name mine "The Other Woman" or "The Mistress" since most weekends I am with her other than my wife. Wifey doesn't think those are very clever, however. I'll keep thinking on that one......

Wooley worm is a fly that is seldom used in Western Washington any more. Yet, when I learned to fish, it was almost always on my line.

So basically, it shows that I am a fly fisher that has been around the sport for a few years.

While I don't exclusively fly fish, it is my first love, and I still want to be sucessfully exclusive with salmon and steelhead. I am an exclusive fly fisher for trout.

WW, the woolly worm has been eclipsed by the woolly bugger, my go-to fly. But I still carry a few woolly worms too in my trout fly box. My handle came from a colleague at work due to my propensity to talk about fishing and all the smoked salmon I'd brought in. One day he just started calling me salmonbelly and kept it up, so that's what I started calling my boat.

Because I spend a LOT more time questing for slabs than I do actually boating slabs.

And being on a "quest" sounds a little more noble than just going fishing.

I named my 15' aluminum boat Slab Quest.

For me it started on a steelhead fishing trip to Georgian bay in Ontario. I have always had a little more downtime than most people but, since I was so pumped to fish it made matters worse. Anything that could cause downtime happened to me in great amounts. Towards the end of the trip my freinds just started to call me downtime, and the name has stuck with me ever since smile .

My first post to the board was on a sleds-vs.-the-world thread. Anyone want to wager which side of the debate I was on? wink

It was used IN SPITE OF, not in any way because of, the Star Wars flicks.

Now that I'm fishing more from a drift boat, I'm considering other options.

I fished with the same group all through college up until a few years ago. We would skip school for weeks at a time and head out fishing. Idaho, Wa, BC, Oregon rivers lakes etc. so we spent a lot of time fishing together. I started fishing when I was 4 in the Sky. It was in the mid 80's after back to back trips. I filled the boat on a 3 day float in Idaho with big trout. One other guy caught a couple of small ones, two rafts 8 guys. A week later we were in BC off the West side of Vancouver Island. I filled the boat again with Springers and Coho. One king went 62lbs. After that they just started calling me The King when we fished or hunted.

Well, I tried fishing out of Westport 4 times on charter boats - each time trying different methods to avoid sea sickness - and nothing worked. I don't have a boat of my own. Also, I grew up going lake fishing with my dad in a canoe, and although it only flipped once, it came close a lot - especially when he would lean over the side to take a leak. Basically, I like the shore as it is drier, there is less of a chance of puking, it's cheaper, and a lot less of a hassle. But, hey, if anyone has an extra seat and you're headed out on something other than huge swells, let me know.

The name kinda says it all...!

It started about 12 years ago when I left rifle hunting. It started as a way of getting away from the crowd, then it grew into an addiction!!

It has change my life and my families.

Bow hunting has been and continues to be an education... ever step in the woods, every arrow I balance, every time I choose to pass up a shot because it is just not right... every day!

I love the sport... it is me!

I stayed at each lot for 6 mos, and all my friends started calling me Woodsy Wayne.

Lotsa people used to call me Tall Paul or Jeep Man, or Mr. Jeeper...etc..

I am almost 6'6" and one of my Jeeps has 'bout 10" of lift....

"Wow, there goes a tall Jeeper"......lol

I always try an incorporate Jeep into most of my lifestyle, clothes, gear, converstation smile

If you see me out and about, I almost ALWAYS have some sort of Jeep clothing on....HAHAAAAhaA

P.S. I have met a coupla really nice guys on here who have helped nuture and educate me about learning Washington waters. You guys know who you are, sincerely, thank you from the bottom of my heart! (SE, DR)

Talljeeper, over and out smile

P.S.S. Too bad Jeep doesnt make some cool fishin gear, the closest I can get is an Orvis Special Grand Cherokee.....

I'll have to agree on the TallJeeper. Paul is pretty tall and I have met him several times and each time he shows up in a different Jeep vehicle. I think he is on a personal quest to own every type ever made all at one time.

I'm just glad he isn't TallYugoer........but the water proof boots thing at Hoodsport still gives me and Val a good chuckle now and then! laugh

This has to be the best NFR thread yet! beer

My passion for fishing began when I was about 5 years old fishing for cutthroat in the Deschutes River. I eventually graduated to steelhead fishing. Hence, fromcutthroattosteelies...

The name was given to me by my fishing buddies when my beard and hair got a little long and wooly. There was a SLIGHT resemblance to the dead one. I was a hippie when younger but never a deadhead.

Piper... Its what I do for a living... run pipe...

On a side note:
In the mechanical engineering field there is an term for the volume of hot air moving thru a section of ductwork... that term is "Cubic Feet per Minute" or otherwise abreviated "CFM"

Hopefully this will shed a little light on a certain persons nickname on this board.

Sorry Cowlitz I couldn't resist... laugh

There used to be a board member called 'Hey Y'all (who has disappeared) -- anyway he called all 'lurkers' damned buzzards!!' So when I registered I was going to use 'ol buzzard' -- but my wife and Reiter Rat said it was too degrading...... Consequently I picked an innocuous little creature that lives in creeks and streams --'The Perriwinkle, (well it is original).. As a kid I used to pick them off rock, peel off the rock shell and use them for trout bait.. cool

I got my name because for 4 years I used to be the president of the Friends of the Cowlitz (FOC). Everybody locally used to refer to me as "Mr. Cowlitz", so the name "Cowlitzfisherman" just seemed like the appropriate name to use here.
=========================================================

Side note back to "Piper':

That's OK Piper! Here's the other side of that "side note" that you had made. I guess that there are always two ways that you can look at things! You said;

Quote:

In the mechanical engineering field there is an term for the volume of hot air moving thru a section of ductwork... that term is "Cubic Feet per Minute" or otherwise abreviated "CFM"
Or….
You could look at this way:

Hot air passing thru pipes is very often called "STEAM"; being an old pipe fitter as you are, you should know that when you screw around with "STEAM"; most often you will end up getting burned really bad laugh laugh

But thinking about board names, such as "Piper" reminded me of my school days when we went to our music classes. We used to call that wimpy looking kid that was always blowing all that "hot air" into that little hollow tube with all those holes in it a "piper" too. Are you sure we didn't go to the same school piper? laugh jk

And then again…the dictionary defines "piper" as; a person who plays a on a pipe; a bagpiper…(big bag of air laugh ) to pay for one's pleasures or bear the consequences of one's actions. Are you sure you're not a bagpiper...Piper? laugh jk

So maybe we should start calling you BP from now on! laugh

Sorry piper, I just couldn't resist it either laugh

I used to be Sea Lemon, cause I have a yellow boat, that's kind of a beater (but a fish catching machine). That moniker didn't exactly fit, or roll off the tongue, so I just registered under a new name.
