Now, there are a couple of things that I expect when I go to Hoodsport. One, there will be tons of fish and two, there will be tons of people after these fish. I've come to except that many people there snag and release but today's pet peave drove me nuts. I was there form 8:00 this morning till 3:00. The whole time there was a guy yelling "HEY!!!" every five seconds THE ENTIRE TIME. I can understand one's enthusiasm for the sport but this was driving me and ever other person I ran into there nuts. There were suggestions by many to use my thumping stick on something besides a fish. Am I just a complainer or was any one else out there to witness this. If I'm a complainer please disregard this post. If you are the "hey" man, just common courtesy for those who want to hopefully fair hook a fish and be entertained by the multitudes not yelling non-stop.

Seems like there is a guy like you had mentioned at the Zone every year. Maybe it's the same guy.

Was it possibly a retarded (oh, sorry.... Mentally challenged) person?
I have had a couple of outings where a person like that (retarded) was yelling "Hi" "Hi" "Hi" to everyone that showed up, and a lot of people were showing up..... Just had to grin and bear it....

This guy didn't have a disability. He just felt the need to yell, "HEY!!!" every 5 seconds for 6+ hours. It was kinda funny for the first 5 minutes but just wore on you after that. After the 4th hour it was downright painful to hear the nonstop yells.

I was there Friday for my annual trip to the zoo and the crowd wasn't too bad. The only problem that I had was ducking flylines. is Hoodsport where all the beginners start?
I could only tolerate the fishery for little over an hour as I would foul hook 7 out of 10 with drift gear. Dragging chum in sideways isn't my idea of a good time. Ended up moving a ways north and went back to my herring & float. Those dogs may be ugly, but they sure will still hit a herring.

I saw a guy out there on friday fishing with a spinner. I didnt see him foul hook a single fish. He would catch one about every 5th cast. I wanted to switch to a spinner myself after watching him but I had left all of mine at home. Has anyone else tried this out there or had any luck with it? Your right about dragging them in. I dont feel the need to fish there under those circumstances.

Usually at Hoodsport, especially in November, ther is a North Wind. This really sucks to cast in because flyfishing is easiest if you wade out and cast north at Hoodsport. Even a slight breeze can be a b*#ch to cast in. A small wind swirl or gust can send you fly line in the wrong direction. This is just my $.02, there might have been begginers there too.

I'm new to this board but it seems to me we were all beginners at one point. I generally try to help a beginner rather then complain about them. Thats just how I am I guess.

Steelyman, that guy was there Friday and Saturday and even 1/4 mile away in a boat you could hear him and it drove us (as well as every other boat in the area) crazy too! Friday the guy got in a big argument with some other people for some reason as well.

Bobber and pink steelhead jig 2' down was the key for me. Caught 19 yesterday (plus one snagged). I got 16 on the same jig. Probably had twice that many bobber downs and/or fish on. Seemed to be a lot more effective fishing it in the open water away from the heavy concentrations of fish at the hatchery in shallow water. There were a lot of guys doing well on herring.

We tried spinners/spoons again this year (with siwash to minimize snagging) and didn't find them near as effective as last year.

Actually, Hoodsport is a training grounds for rookie fly guys. Fishingjunky, it's been a big push for years since it's easy fishing usually. Gives the budding flyfisherman a boost. Wind shouldn't be a huge problem, if you know how to side arm and load the rod properly to punch it. If it was a direct head wind, that would be different. But hard to cast in crowded conditions with a fly rod. Why I don't fish that zoo. I like to enjoy fishing. Bad enough some other fisheries are being crowded too. Nature of the beast.

I think the big push most of all was by a somewhat famous guide here in WA that claims he founded the fishery. Funny that most people I know have been fishing it for quite awhile, and on a fly to boot. Suddenly he's the founder of it. Like me saying I founded flyfishing on the Nooch. Since I never saw anyone using one since the day I started fishing it. Sure someone before me was doing it as well.

There always seems to be people like that. Normally it's a mixture of things that cause them to do it. That's where it's best to bring ear plugs with you. laugh

Being the politically incorrect person that I am, I would stand next to him and yell louder - possibly even provoking some physical emotion out of the feller then taking out some physical aggression on him - just the way I am built I guess...growing up a backwards arse country boy, I just wouldn't have it smile

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

I was there early Friday afternoon on the north side and never heard the the Hey! Hey! man. I guess that I was so involved with cranking in those nasty doggies that I was totally oblivious!
