Has anyone tried this reel? An online fishing site (TackleTour, I think) has compared it to the Shimano Stradic and the Daiwa scored higher in total overall score.

I ordered a couple of 4000 size to use them for salmon and steelhead fishing, but I'm having second thoughts as they're quite heavy and large at 14.3 oz, 300yds 10# line capacity. I wish they had a 3000 size, which would be comparable to the Shimano's 4000 series.

If you have one, let me know what you think of it.

I have six of them. I have used them for freedrifting for about a year now with out a hitch.

They are an awesome reel. They hold 150yds of 10# and have a large spool for their size so they cast great.

I would recommend them hello

Loomis,

What do you mean by "stiff?"
Ironically, the review specifically stated that one of the strength of the Daiwa Capricorn reel over the Stradic was that the retrieve was very smooth. The Stradic was smooth initially, but it became not as smooth after some use.

ReiterRat,

I'm glad you are happy with the reel. This is giving me some confidence about the purchase. Sounds like you have the 2500 size. Do you use it for salmon angling, too?

The 2500 size is correct. We use quite a bit for tossing Dick Nites at the coho, no problems.

What I meant by salmon should have been "Chinook" salmon...you know, the ones that really test your gear!
