I am trying to calculate the weight of a fish that my brother CnR'ed the other day and I keep getting outrageously high numbers. I was wondering if some one could help me out with a good formula that would estimate the weight closely the fish was 35x25 inches. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tip. The problem with that calculator is it claims the fish weighed 28.23 pounds. Which after looking at the fish I would say is quite impossible. The fish wasn't that big.

Are you sure about your girth? Seems like a fatty to me. Salmon?

I agree with Neal on the girth thing... seems way out of proportion to the length of the fish. Typical girth: length ratio for an average salmon is 3: 5. If it's an accurate girth measurement, though, the weight number goes up considerably. Girth is everything when it comes to determining the weight of a fish!

And a third on the girth ...

Very disproportionate for the length of the fish, even if it was a fattie.

I think there may have been a goof along the way frown

I am rather sure that the measurments were acurate I am not positive since I was holding the fish and not doing the measuring, but I did see the number. And the fish was a fat one. Just to be safe I cut 3 inches off the girth and re-caluculated I still came up with a 20 plus pound fish. Is this possible for a fish of this length to weigh this much?

That was one mighty big fish! I cried out,"Holy S**t" the first time I saw it on the salmon gallery. Still looking for my first 20+ silver, and its been thirty years!

I think BB's fish weight calculator using a divisor of 775 was pretty close at 29 pounds. It is not unusual for a fish that size to lose 2 pounds in blood loss and dehydration in just a few hours, let alone the day after.

The variations in weight when two different fish have the same girth has a lot to do with what the cross-section of the fish looks like, especially the bucks. If it's a barrel chested, tide fresh wide-body (more circular midsection), it will weigh a lot more than a darkening fish that has slabbed up with a tall ridge back and skinny from side to side (more elliptical midsection).

In any case, nice fish!

I guess I'm due!

Especially now that I've finally graduated from "egg" status on this board.
