Wondering if anybody could enlighten me on running two rods off of one downrigger. I have never done it before and was wondering how it's done. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Connect 1 release to the downrigger ball and connect the 2nd release to the downrigger cable about 20 feet above the ball.

Keeping one rod on either side of the downrigger helps avoid tangles too.

Fishing 2 lines from 1 downrigger can take some getting used to. Be sure to keep your set back on the bottom line fairly short to avoid tangling the upper line as you drop the ball down. I prefer to keep the upper line set back to 20 feet or less. As far as vertical spacing I've gone as close as 10 feet whan sockeye fishing to as much as 40 feet. The greater the spacing the more chance the upper line will tangle the lower line when it releases. I have no preference regarding the same side of the boat or not. Be sure to use release clips that have rubber to grip your downrigger cable or the upper release may slide on the cable. I hope this helps.

you could also rig a spoon on an 8'-10' leader with a snapswivel and clip it on the line already set. the rig will slide down to the belly of the line and troll at about half the depth of the set. on lake erie we used to call it a "slider"

it gets real interesting when you have planer boards out either side with 2 rods on each, 2 downriggers down with a set and a stacker(each with a slider) and 2 rods flatlining with lead or a dipsydiver. for a total of 14 baits on troll \:\)

Another tip is to think about what you will do when bringing the downrigger up...especially if the bottom line has a strike. Manual downriggers are no problem, just watch for the clip, but with electrics its really nice to have a stop set for the top clip. I use electric scottys and add an extra stop on the cable for the top clip when fishing multiple lines. This way the downrigger will automatically shut off when the first clip comes up even if you're not paying attention cause the fish is fighting hard. I fish them as close as ten feet vertical but you have to be careful when dropping the gear or turning.
Hope this helps.
