WHY:
The federal government has done as little as possible to protect our salmon runs; as a result, Northwest fishermen and salmon dependent communities are not getting a fair shake. Once the home to the greatest salmon fishery in the world, the Northwest now struggles with dwindling populations and increasingly strict fishing regulations.
This week, the feds will release their draft of the Federal Salmon Plan, the comprehensive plan to
recover salmon and steelhead in the Columbia and Snake River Basin. Since the last plan came out in
2000, the Northwest has seen nothing but failures for salmon including increased river temperatures, lower
flows, and spill cuts. The new plan ignores sound science and put our jobs, our recreation and our livelihoods in further jeopardy.
For us, it's the last straw. The time has come to join our fellow fishermen, and tell Congress that there is a better solution. Let's tell the feds exactly what we think of their plan for our salmon, our jobs, our way of life, and our livelihoods.
On September 8th in Portland, OR, we have the chance to change the direction of federal policy related to
our salmon and steelhead stocks. It's going to take a unified and strong voice to be heard. To succeed we'll
need every sport fisherman, every industry leader, and every tribal fisherman to join together to
send a message to our Congressional representatives, BPA, the Army Corps, NOAA Fisheries, and all those
people in Washington, DC who think they know what's best for our fish. We have a vision and it's Are there really more sport fis.ems not
decreasing salmon populations and decreasing jobs. Help us tell our leaders that we need a change in the
Northwest and that SALMON MEAN BUSINESS.
