What the HELL is the reason baseball fans must have those stupid nicknames for their favorite stupid baseball player? Booney Camy GAR The Sheriff AROD Junior ItchyBalls And why is the baseball stadium that has a huge name on it "SAFECO FIELD" called " The SAFE"??? Why does baseball have to nickname everything? Is it because the game itself is so friggin boring?

The only time I dislike the nicknames is when Ron Fairly uses them, that clown is the worst, he brings nothing to the broadcast.

AKKINGS: How can you say Ron Fairly brings nothing to the broadcast? He is the very best at telling you the most obvious things. He brings redundancy, tired old clichés and a clear picture of what is too obvious to mention. I about wear out my mute button to keep from listening to his ceaseless prattle.

Its part of the culture of the game. It really originates with the players.
There have been some classic nicknames ...my favorites are:
Len Dykstra - 'Nails'
Bruce 'Eggs' Benedict
Al 'The Mad Hungarian' Hrabosky
The whole first letter of the first name second part of the last name nickname thing like 'A-Rod' etcetera also isnt as new a phenomena as you might think....long time Brave and Yankee outfielder Claudell Washington was known as C-dub forever, I'm sure there are others, that's just the first one that popped into my head.
Players don't just have nicknames for other players. They give them to their bats, gloves, hats, batting helmets, batting gloves, bases, umpires, shoes, stadiums, announcers, fans, uniforms......pretty much everything.
Baseball is a game of repetition and players (if you ask them) are constantly fighting boredom, nicknames are most likely a way of combatting that boredom.
...that said any nickname ending in a derivative of '-e' is a pretty half-assed effort.
**Edit: btw g' pa Babe Ruth's nick was the super creative 'The Babe'....the Bronx Bombers are of course a nick for the yank-ees, who have sometimes been know to play the phill-ies....

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

It's like "Prime Time" Deon Sanders, or William "The Refigerator" Perry, or Jevon "The Freak" Kearse, or Walter "Sweetness" Payton, or OJ "juice" Simpson. Of course, football nicknames are much cooler than baseball nicknames. I mean, how do you get a nickname when you can't even play in the rain?

George Carlin once did a bit about baseball vs football: In football you wear a helmet, in baseball a "cap". Football games are played in stadiums, domes, and coliseums; baseball is played in a "park". In football you have a penalty, in baseball you have an "error". In football you have "sudden death", in baseball you have "extra innings". In football the winning strategy is a strong offense using aerial attacks and ground maneuvers targeting the enemy's weaknesses. In baseball the strategy is to go "home". Then Carlin would skip across the stage saying he's wearing a cap, going through a park to go home.
