The best way to quit something, is TRULY convince yourself that you HATE it with a passion... Dwell on the negative side of things... Up North this summer I took my last pack of cigarettes and literally just about chain smoked them one night... woke up with a bad sore throat and stumbled around looking for the cat that shi.t in my mouth overnight... I haven't had even the slightest bit of desire since... I won't lie, I have a chew now and then just more or less for something to do, but you won't be able to quit if you actually miss it and enjoy it...Just food for thought!

It has ruined more than just his life. He became a different person, people would ask me why I cared about that looser, but I remember how he used to be, one of the best people I knew, but not anymore. Breaking an addiction is hard people who do provide a hopeful example for the others. I told him if others can do it (quit), so can you, you just took the wrong road, now get on the right one, but he didn't hear me.

Best thing is refuse to start, refuse to become addicted, and if you are break it as soon as possible, nothing should have that kind of control over a person.

I know someone who quit nicotine by putting $5.00 in a large clear jar everyday. Just looking at the $ made them not want to smoke, at the 1 year anniversary they went to Hawaii, with extra $$$ to spend.

That's sad man. What the system fails to realize is that these people have a disease and need help. I've seen a lot of good people lose everything and have seen people with nothing get everything back and thn some. There's always hope.

I have a love it and leave it relationship with the chew. I can go to work for 40 or more days on the tugs and not even have a chew or really even miss it but, as soon as I get on the river or get a rod in my hand I love to have that pinch or big ol' burl between the lower lip and gums. There are some products out of Sweden right now that are being touted as cancer free. They are basically small pouches that are extremely strong and surprisingly flavorful and inexpensive. Just google Swedish snoos and check em' out yourselfs. Happy New Year Everyone! -TBJ

Watched my Dad die of lung cancer--- he smoked 2 to 3 packs a day. He went from 240 lbs to about 150 lbs in 6 months. Last couple of weeks he had a white growth (thrush) growing in his mouth and throat. Quit today!!

Congratulations to everyone out there that has kicked a difficult habit!

I am also battling the Copenhagen demons. On my 4th day now, and the dizzy/spaced-out feeling from nicotene withdrawal is starting to subside. Trying to quit cold turkey. The terrible heartburn is what finally got me to attempt quitting. The thought of esophagus cancer freaks me out.

Finished my last pack two nights ago. And have been at the gym the last two days.

Went Skiing back around Xmas and found out ive become a total schlub. Only made 4 runs before my legs were jello and I was beat. I have 32 inch toothpicks holding up 200 lbs of beerbelly.

The hard part is when alcohol touches my lips I start getting the Nic-fits and also I have zero patience right now.

Had poker night with the boys last night and I chipped a little. Hard to quit when drinking a few beers and others are chewing around you.
But, I'm not discouraged.
FYI a few beers, the patch and a chew does not make for a good time. Thought I was going to hurl. \:D

Oh yeah, took 3rd out of 18 guys \:D \:D

You guys are making me think. I went to the doctors recently he suggested that I quit now or start getting my house in order....lots of arrows in his quiver, lung cancer, throat cancer, emphysema , high blood pressure congestive heart failure. Just over all shorter life and a painful death that your family will carry with you for ever. When I last quit for 2 years. I used to envision myself in a hospital bed telling my family I was dying from smoking..... ie. stupidity, I have another smokers line witch I carry with me. " Anyone can quit smoking, it takes a real man to stand up to cancer" I will join the crowd here and keep you informed of my progress like it or not you can be my support group.

I watched a good friend die of tongue cancer.

Honestly, if you are a smoker/chewer, and you get tongue cancer, just kill yourself the day you find out.

You are way better off that way. Honestly. I've witnessed Hell on Earth.

But hey, what do I know?

Enjoy that cig or chew.

True.

You're not going to live forever, but you can put the odds in your favor as to how, or how not, you are going to die.

There's no guarantee that you won't/can't get tongue cancer as a non-smoker or chewer. The odds state you will win the lottery first, though.

The odds go up if you chew, smoke, drink, don't exercise, partake in questionable lifestyles, etc.

Keep-em sick, treat the symtom not the cause, pharmicudical follies: I won't be milked of my last cent like the hundreds of dieing and soon to be dead.

Most Americans could treat themselves by getting off their fat asses and engaging in an active lifestyle, but it's easier to wait in line for a perscription and take out life insurance to cover their morgaged up the ass lifestyles. Fuc% the system.

for those of you trying to quit, the recidivism rate for tobacco/nicotine is about 96% and about 95% for heroin. When science discovered how our nervous system works in conjunction with our muscles, they named the receptor sites "nicotinic receptors". That's why it's so damn hard to quit.

And now for soapbox time: the World Health Organization estimates that approximately 420,000 people die in the U.S. each year from American Tobacco products. They also put alcohol deaths at 110,000 a year which does not include traffic deaths. Take Sol's advice, hit the fish whistle.

So back to the first post...are you still holding out, Magicfly?

I'm happy to report that this is day 8 with no Copenhagen. The challenging times are first thing in the morning or after a good meal. But the desire is starting to go away. It's hard to break a 20+ year habit, but in the end it will be worth it.

Stam - you give good advice. Stay away from friends that dip. Plus, the extra money I won't be spending on Cope is a bonus. Even at the Rez, it's around $4 per can. Which adds up to over $1,000 a year at my previous user rate. Could buy a lot of great fishing gear or even fly to Alaska for a trip.

I appreciate the comments on this topic. It has certainly helped me so far. Thanks for the support.
