It hurts enough to make you wince when you take a deep breath, or move, or basically do anything. How long did it take to go away? Inquiring minds want to know.

About a month.
Got mine the same way.
My broken ones took two months.
Both injuries hurt worse than my broken back.
What's next Sol?

If it hurts when you take a deep breath, sounds like you may have cracked it. If so, it will hurt for probably a few weeks-month.

Don't you have some glaucoma medicine for that???

I've broken, bruised and generally messed up my rib cage several times. Best thing to help is a chest band. You can pick one up at most drug stores. You can use almost anything that will restrict your chest movement. It helps a lot, especially when lying down.

Bruised, separated or cracked it can take up to several months--- a couple of sneezes in a row will wilt a guy right down to a puddle.

Four broken ribs = 6 weeks of discomfort for me, and don't hang out with anyone you find remotely funny. Pain and laughter are not a good combination unless you've just donkey punched someone.

Same here on the cracked ribs... about 2 months 'til it stopped hurtin' all together.

Get the doc to prescribe ya some chemical relief... or ingest that glaucoma medicine in a way that won't make you cough... like added to some brownie mix.

If I remember right... its stronger and lasts longer that way too!

I bruised them, front left one time. I was trying some tarzan sh1t and the branch broke. I can't even really remember how long it took to get over them, but I clearly remember every time I laugh turned into a near cry.

I didn't let it stop me from doing anything I wanted to do though. I know I kept playing sports and what not. You probably shouldn't bench press, turn over and do push ups.

I had my ribs cracked for open heart surgery and was back on the river in 6 weeks. Fell on my arse a few times on the slippery rocks. The Vicodin and Oxycontin sure came in handy. My ribs still crack and get a little sore.

BTW a fishing buddy, ex. logger, bruised or cracked his ribs jumping into the boulder patch to save his daughter who was caught underneath in the swirly pocket whirlpool. Had so much arenaline that he grabbed her and pulled her out. Then he noticed he was hurt. He was sore for a while.

Sol go see a doctor and get a prescription. You'll be back on the slopes in no time.

This happened first run of the day in Colorado, and I still boarded the rest of the day. It's funny how you don't fall when you know you can't let yourself.

I divorced myself of the pain meds after I asked for a divorce. It's not something I want to tinker with anymore. I'll deal with the pain.

SOL, sorry to here about the injury. As an RN I see rib fractures pretty often. Make sure to do some deep breathing and coughing so you don't get pneumonia. I know coughing is the last thing you want to do but it will prevent any complications. Better take some OTC meds. And don't feel to bad ab out all the injuries it's been one of those years for me to. Started in September when I threw my back out at my bachelor party, that lasted about 2 weeks. Then I wrenched my neck, pain and stiffness for another 2 weeks. And last but not least, a torn tendon in my ankle. That happened Oct 20th. I go in for surgery Jan 4th. I'm looking at 6 weeks of recovery after that.

Dude,

If you were 20, you'd be over it in 3-5 days. At your age, 3-5 weeks. Advil helps but overuse it........your liver won't like it.

Better stick with fishing. You're less likely to come home beaten up.

Car wreck 1997.

3 cracked ribs left side.

WIthout going into too much detail, they were broken by the passenger side front wheel entering the passenger compartment through the floor.

Nothing you can do except wait for them to heal and avoid re-injury.

And no, I wasnt wearing a seatbelt.

Yep is sucks. Took me a couple months and sleeping was an agonizing struggle, especially rolling over. Got my cracked ribs whilst drunken boxing with a friend (failed to tell me he was former golden gloves) after a fifth and a pay per view match. Don't believe the hype.

Nix the chest bands. They lead to pneumonia. We haven't wrapped broken ribs in the ER for at least 15 years 'cause of that.

I'd recommend a script for vicodin, or crack.

I hereby withdraw my suggestion of using a chest band in light of the medical update from he who catches chum from decks. Maybe it's been 15 years since I needed one.

Vicodin is for pussies and people over 80, if you need a script at least get oxycodone.

From a three time rib splitter
Give it time to heal up and then a little longer.
I hate saying ``it was feeling pretty good until it popped again``.
The new sore spot is likely a future weak spot.
Good luck on not splitting it farther.
Take it easy.
Good Luck

Someone I kow recently had to spend 2 days at the hospital to get off of the fentanyl patch they were prescribed for chronic pain. My go to pain meds are 800 - 1200 mg of ibuprofen when something hurts bad enough.

Sol,
Better hope you don't catch a cold or choke on the fish whistle and start coughing. I broke two ribs and my collar bone years ago playing ice hockey .Then caught a bad cold and I tell you what every time I coughed it felt like someone was kicking me in the ribs.

Sol,

Yeah, been there too. Sounds more like a cracked rib than a bruised one. Takes 6 to 8 weeks as I recall. And the doc told me same as Hawk tells you, don't use the chest band.

Go ahead and play tough, but I have some left over vicodin if you change your mind. I used it for several months with my ruptured neck disc and wasn't addicted. It helps some, but not near as much as I wished.

BTW, doing the same ole, same ole results in more injuries with each passing year. Sorry to bear such bad news. Like Jerry says, getting old ain't for wimps.

Two cracked ribs on my lower left back in high school...played six football games with 'em...not fun for one single minute, but it would have been less fun to watch.

They didn't even come close to healing until about 8 weeks after the season ended...but they did heal, and no ill effects since then.

Fish on...

I have broken, bruised or cracked every rib back when I was racing motocross (I crashed alot). It's no fun, and the best way to heal is to just take it easy for a few weeks.

It hurts, it sucks and there is little you can do for it. Coughing hurts, sneezing will put you to your knees. Just dont over medicate for the pain, sometimes you just have to bear down and get thru it.

Make some Glaucoma butter or ( budder ) as we used to call it Sol substitute it for butter in your favrorite cookie recipe. It is strong and can be an effective pain reliever with some very pleasant side effects. I have a recipe for the budder if you need. -T
