SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!

Update on Joe Arpaio

Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!

Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over , and the County Supervisors said okay

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.
The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.
I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand. He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.
Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO

HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona) who created the 'Tent City Jail':
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but 'G' movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get
Sued For Discrimination.

He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.

When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working
ON My Chain Gangs.

He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton....If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'

He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More On The Arizona Sheriff:

With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports:
About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued
Pink Boxer Shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached
138 Degrees inside the week before.
Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped
down to their PINK SOCKS.

'It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,' Said James Zanzot, An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year. 'It's Inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear,
But They Didn't Commit Any Crimes,So Shut Your Damned Mouths!'
Way To Go, Sheriff!
Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

If you agree, pass this on. If not, just delete it.
Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County , Arizona.

I kinda like this guy. Seen reports on him before. Do a crime, pay your time. He is not about making anybody feel good, he's about dealing with what you've done, making you pay, get beyond it, deal with it, move on, I like it.

Why are "stray" animals worth even 3 million dollars per year ?

Why not give the "stray" animals a quick and painless bullet in the head and move on to more serious matters ?

Down where my family is from roving packs of feral dogs became such a danger attacking people and destroyed Avocado Crops so much that the local government adopted a "shoot on sight" policy for stray dogs. The former Animal Shelter is now used as a storage facility.

I dont know why That prick forces inmates to watch Gingrich tapes. Even that crook got caught.

He could never happen in our state. Closest thing we ever had was Gary Edwards and he was always fighting with those who think you can reform people once they get to jail. I used to run inmate work crews to fix trails in the Capitol forest when we put on the Sheriff's trail ride every year.( DOC was not always available) Those guys practically fought each other to get the privilege of working in the woods. Beat the tank any day.

From my experience, jail should be punishment and atonement to a large degree. For those who want to better their lives, get an education, start a work program, get their teeth fixed, etc... all that should be available after doing their time. Well, maybe health and dental work could be offered. I remember an old gal that stole a medic van so she could have an abcessed tooth treated.

As one who sees the immediate result of crime on victims regularly, I think getting tougher couldn't hurt. I have worked in a tough jail early in my career and I can tell you...there is the "con" mentality that always will play the game because it makes their life better while they are there. If there wasn't such a high recitivisim rate, I might actually believe these programs work for them. The difference is that no program, no matter how well intended, will work unless the person really wants to change. Maybe they do some good for the less hardened.

Change is pretty hard for someone who only knows the way of violence, dope, and a criminal lifestyle. When they get out, unless they move away from all their crappy "friends", they are doomed.

Aunty, in what way is this Country better off now than at some previous time in history ?

That was your point about how being tough on crime had beed tried before wasn't it ?

There was also a point in time were it was fairly common for the majority of people to pull their own weight, I suppose you could say that has been tried and didn't work...........

Jail time is far too comfortable and there are a lot of people who would rather be in a cozy jail than outside looking for work...

Gary Edwards is a good guy. Its a shame he retired.

Anyone who says jail is too cozy and comfy needs to go spend a month or two there, sleeping on a concrete floor between a tweaker and a child molester.

Goinfishin hit it square on with his posts. I didn't get my sh*t together until I quit hanging out with my smalltown loser douchebag buddies. The first thing they asked me after not seeing them for a year was "When you moving back?" Those idiots still work assembly line and clean septic tanks for Minimum Wage to support their drug habits...or what they call "partying." I wonder if those failures realize they aren't cool and no one wants to party with their sorry asses anymore.

We have the highest percentage of our population imprisoned of any other country in the world. I don't know who's idea it was to sweep the high unemployment rate under the rug by locking up the unemployed, but I suspect it was Reagan and The War on Drugs that started it. It's only going to get worse to the point of Civil War if it keeps up, and it WILL keep up, now that Corporate America destroyed our Manufacturing Base. The way I see it unless drastic changes are made we're heading straight into an even Greater economic Depression (not just Recession) than the 1930's and violent class conflict a la 1790's France or 1920's Russia. It won't happen in this decade, but it may in my lifetime, and most likely will in my daughter's, if things aren't turned around and the production sector isn't returned to America and a leash isn't put on the Corporate system. Oh and if Civil War does happen--Stay the f*ck away from Utah if you aren't Mormon.

I think them working a hard day to earn there keep probably gets them pretty tired so they get a good nights sleep, i think that provides a better environment for the guards. And its better then having them in a cell 23 hours a day trying to make a tooth pick into a weapon or thinking of ways to harm others inside the system.

You also think they would be angry and take it out on society, I think they might think twice before doing something to get them back in the poke.

I personally don't think whats going on in the prison systems we have now are all that great. But will agree that some form of education can't hurt any inmate.

Also when you referred to chain gangs not working in the past, they were also beaten and whipped, withheld water and food . Kinda comparing apples to oranges. But I just aint that smart so I am probably wrong.

I was sent this topic by a relative, and auntie I have to disagree with you. He may take things a bit far. It does sound to me like he has made inroads to productive lifestyles. I went on a presentation for a major ( 275 million dollar) public housing construction project that we were thankfully awarded. It is called Hunters Point for those may be familiar with the SF Bay area. In that presentation was an individual who lived in the projects. He announced to the group he was 41 years old never finished high school, nor held a job EVER until 2 years before. He had spent time in Jail for a variety of reasons since the time he was 14. He said it was easy, mostly tv, basketball and weight lifting he made life long friends. He asked me about what I would do as far as accepting and training kids from this tough neighbor hood to avoid what he had experienced. Rambled a bit there for sure, but the sheriff seems to be providing an environment for people to learn responsibilities, learn to work. I think this sheriffs approach might work as it seems nothing else we have does. I wonder what the return rate of his ex prisoners is.... I'm sure one of you smart folks has the time and inclination to figure that out

What if, and this is a big if, we took some federal dollars and revitalized our inner cities? Holy crap Batman, we should have fought urban blight!

This won't eliminate all crime, but it would go a long way - ounce of prevention...

I did some time on McNeil Island. Doh. Let me rephrase. I was WORKING on a large project.
My escort took me on a sightseeing ride to the jobsite.
He pointed out that at one time Mcneil was alomst 100% self suficcient. Grew their own crops, raised beef, milked cows, etc.
Inmates worked on the farms and had earned money.
Then some greedy company whines they can't sell the prison milk and that it's competing with private enterprise. Care to guess the company ?
Now you and I have to pay.
It friggin sad if you ask me.
