It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

This is awesome, kudos to you both for an amazing trip and killer pics.......quick question, when you tossed flies how long were the casts you had to make to reach the fish? Size of rods? 10 wt? 12?

Nice job guys! I've only had a couple shots at catching tarpon in the Keys in '93 but I hooked exactly ZERO fish on my trip......I love the jumping shots , damn nice stuff.... smile

I think that catfish you caught was a "sailcat". Nasty barb on em. I caught a few like it in florida this year. They actually fight fairly well on the light gear.

Thanks for ID'ing that cat Neal, they did fight ok on the gear we had. I enjoyed catching him just because I like to catch different fish. truth be told, I think I'd enjoy catching one or two of each of the common species down there than a trophy of a single type of fish.

Mingo, We stripped fly's in the wake while slow trolling for the several that were hooked on flys. We had limited time and tried to hook as many fish as possible so we went with our guides suggestions of small yo-zuris, etc. From what I've witnessed, you're asking for a 1-1.5 hour battle if you hook anything over 100 pounds with a 12 weight. With fish present that run well over 200, you could be in for an all-day'er....it would be fun, once wink

Damn that sure looked like a nice trip in pictures. You are definitely honing some skills with the cam, Master Fee!

Any G-I misadventures with parasites, guys?

What about malaria prophylaxis?

Makes me jealous to see all that fun in the sun. Weather's pretty crappy today and I have nothing better to do right now than go tend to a bad case of Herpes Zoster at the hospital... gotta run.

We were both shooting a Nikon D200. Mine with a Nikon 28-200 vibration reduction lens. The camera will do four frames a second which really helps capture the leaping tarpon pix. Of course it also helps whne you jump a lot. The guide wanted us to put out about 110 feet of line, so the initial jump was too far away for a great shot. Since we had several strikes while letting line out I think we can fish much closer to the boat, and will do so next time. Ryley's with the 28-200 and a really cool Tokina 11-16. I liked the Tokina so much I ordered one for myself. The Tokina 11-16 gets such great reviews it’s hard to find one. I searched a good bit before finding one at 17th street camera in New York. Price roughly $600

FNP:
No issues with mosquitoes. We had a couple the one night we spent in a village, but not too many and none whatsoever at Bluefields. We each got one of two bites from a critter like a deer fly. No issues with G>I> stuff. The lodge water is form a good well. In the village we drank rain water, which is very abundant. The house where we stayed had several 200-300 gallon barrel filled with rain water. When Ryley asked how long it took to fill one the guy said, “About 15 minutes” Later we decided it didn’t take nearly that long.

Wow. This one slipped under my radar.

Great report and photos guys! thumbs

Yet Another Destination to add to The List.

I think Bob needs to make a "Far Away Destination" board where these types of reports can live. I'd like to see a board that this report, Stam's Panama report and Mingo's Hawaii reports. They are too good to get lost in the void, IMO.
