Snopes says it is a hoax. The shark pictured was caught off Nova Scotia.

Don't dismiss it so easily, guys.

I had a now-deceased patient who was a gillnetter in Grays Harbor who caught a monstrous Great White in the bay.

No snopes needed. I've seen the original pic at his bedside.

While it is probably unlikely, it is a possibility. A little far north, but not impossible. But non sense none the less.

You can find Great whites wherever you can find tuna. As far as latitides go. This far north would be rare but far from impossible.

Great whites do come up this way. Divers off Ediz Hook have accounts during el nino years. Wish more would come up and take care of the seals grin

No kiddin huh. How cool would that be to go out to the hook to watch aerial Great Whites throwing seals through the air!?! That would kick ass!

And yes, the prospect of watching that does excite me more than a little.

click here for some historic accounts.

None of those were about the patient I was referring to.

His name was Ed Rydman, a notorious GH gillnetter. I believe there is a display about the catch at the Seattle Aquarium as well. I'll have to get the specifics of the catch from his daughter.

I'm kinda surprised nobody walked off with them - They used to be just laying around in the old Fisheries building.

Thinking about this reminded me of the smell of that old building, which is burned into my memory forever.

Ah yes. You know it's spring time in the old Fish building when the started to grind up the frozen pond carcasses to feed the babies in the pond. rofl

Fortunately, we don't get those types of smells in the new building.

Every now and then, someone will be carting around a bucket of festering squid, dead sea birds, or a rotting dolphin going under the knife for an autopsy, but those events are far and few between. wink

We had one at our boat fishing New Year's Island north of Santa Cruz Ca. A decade ago. My friend was looking over the side while bringing in a Rockcod and followed it to the surface. He doesn't like to fish in the ocean now!

The best one I had in the harbor 3 years ago was a Thresher shark with about 5 foot of body but 6 foot of tail. It was right in front of O'leary Creek in the deep spot. I had it hooked on the head (Chinarked!) When I finally got it to surface I was just ready to proclaim one of the biggest Chinook released of the year when it's stinking tail started to whip around. Holy **it get that leader cut!!
There was a North River right along side to witness and he couldn't believe what he had just seen either!! There's some big one out there boys!!

OK this was worth the wait, boys, I promise.

I got the goods on the bonafide, honest to God, true to life Gargantuan Grays Harbor Great White.

The year was 1969. The place was a drift between Buoy 13 (western demarcation of MA 2-2) and Buoy 16. The fish was literally MASSIVE..... wit' 'UGE teet' shocked

When they strung 'im up on the hoist, a seal fell outta its mouth and the tail flippers of a second one could be seen hanging out.

I figured that eyeFish's GW shark paper would have mention of the 18 footer caught in WIllapa Bay in 1947 by a gillnetter. There's a picture of it in a local bar.

This thread sucks, I just got two new wave-sails and am about to purchase a new surf board.

And yeah, I spend a lot of time in the surf at Damon Point, as a matter of fact it is my favorite spot. I was planning on learning to wave-sail there this summer.

Come to think of it my friends and I saw something huge thrash about 50' south of the sunken jetty one morning.

I guess I'll rule out evening soul sessions.

Used to surf under the moonlight in the gulf coast......only problem was paddling through acres of croakers that stuck their big eyeballs out of the water and made croaking sounds. That will give you the creeps!

I owned property at Point Brown from 1990 through 2006 due to the closeness of the "low key" surfing afforded at Damon Point. I have some cool memories of that break. When that place went off it was at times a 1/4 mile ride...
The memories that are not so cool involved putting on, taking off and paddling out in a 5/4/3 Rip Curl fullsuit with booties, gloves and a hood... And getting caught outside on an outgoing tide. The old jetty always looked like a great place to be when getting sucked out towards the bar!

Never once saw a White or any other type of shark during those years spent in Ocean Shores.

I am actually buying a Stand up Paddle board next. I only head to the beach in the summer/early fall, and so I might not get as many epic days, but I don't really care. I figure that the SUP will keep me out of the water most the time, and I can avoid the hood, and maybe booties a lot of days. Plus, it will allow me to paddle out to the point, instead of walking.

Most of them have mast-inserts in them, so I also will start trying to sail it in the waves. It is still low-key out there, I really never see that many guys. Anyway that is the plan for the summer right now, we'll see how it goes.

My in-laws in Maui call them Oolie boards. They're quite the rave on the islands and there are some seriously skilled paddlers/surfers there. Looked into getting one myself to paddle around Lake Union when I lived in Seattle close to Gasworks. The only shop I found that carried them wanted over $1k for board and paddle. Now that I live on the Harbor there isn't much for paddling water around here unless I wanted to paddle it up and down the muddy Wishkah,.....which I just might do. Was up in Issaquah last weekend and noticed that the Costco there carried a board and paddle set up for around $500.

If you want to strengthen your core those boards will do it in no time.

Yeah the board I am wanting to get costs $1200. Available in Bellingham or shipped. Not cheap, but I think it will get used a lot by me.

I probably won't use it much for paddling from place to place, it is designed for wave riding and won't have the glide that longer touring oriented SUPs have. I will try fishing off of it for sure.

I caught a 10' sixgill or sevengill or soupfin or thresher 12 miles out of LaPush in 2005 in my 21' boat. My buddy freaked when we chased it up to 20 mph. I didnt want to lose my gud luk flasher (green of course). I saw the dorsal and thought I had like a 60-70 lbr till it ran away off the bow at mach 2. We eventually caught up to it - I got my flasher and cut the leader (50 lb mono). It was real scary bein that close to a shark with teeth. The thing was huge and I couldnt believe I got it to the boat. It was mostly due to Kev runnin the fish down 2-3 times. Sorry no pics except those of the dirty draws floatin away bout 15 after the release

We did catch 2 Humboldts that day and I figured that was why a shark was up in our business that day.

HI ...the shark isn't in Wesport any longer so I'm told. I heard someone in the Failor family has it. I'd like to know where it has ended up- Ed's daughter

can you tell me how a person would go about seeing the jaws of that shark... my dad caught it 8-11-1969 16' 1,250 lbs. I wonder if those details are on record somewhere as well.

Maybe Vickie knows. She seems to be the keeper of the family history.

This stand-up surfer in SoCal got a good look. I don't think you want to fall in during this situation.

That shark looks like it has a radio tag implanted near its dorsal fin.

The shark in the pic isn't clipped. Extra fin let it swim

Isn't that shark in the Point Defiance Zoo now? I know a mold was over the old Bosarge Taxidermy before it burnt down some years ago. If i remember right it was a gill netter in the mouth of Elk River that got that big one.

No snopes needed. I've seen the original pic at his bedside.

There is also a pic of the same fish at the Fish and Game office in Montesano, and it is a monster indeed.

A tribal gillnetter told me that he has seen them on rare occasion in the bay between the mouth of the Hump and the two islands to the south (sorry can't remember their names) .
