Because the Obama administration didn't have the foresight to put stipulations or make sure there were no loopholes in the bailout plan that ensured that the money was not to be used for bonuses, they are levying a "bail out tax" on those who got bonuses? Really??? Back when Daschel's tax issues came out I wasn't sure if this administration was grandstanding or if they are woefully unprepared. Looks like woefully unprepared to me.

So the solution is to create a special tax to fix a problem that they created. Really? This seems like a dangerous precedent to set.

This is nothing like smokers or drinkers being taxed. If smokers and drinkers choose not to pay that tax all they have to do is stop buying smokes and booze.

What gets me about these bonuses is the CEO of AIG was put in place by the government when they took majority ownership. It's funny the administration can't even control the people they put in the positions to run these companies.

Or rich execs taking million dollar bonuses ala the tax payer can just stop taking the bonus.

This one sets a good precendent. You f'd it up so much we the people had to bail your ass out. How dare you take a bonus. You are lucky we the people don't fire your ass or worse.

A lot of money being put out there. You gotta wonder about the accountability piece. Heard on the news today that Gietner fessed up to getting Dodd to create the loophole that lead to the bonuses because he was afraid of violating contracts at AIG. If that is true, then it seems pretty bad that those who voted for it are now leading the rallying cry of discontent.

I believe the "Bailout Tax" is meant to be a a lever to get the folks that got them to give them back voluntarily.
Seems there is absolutely no ethics in todays business world, undoubtedly one of the big reason for the recession.

I doubt the House version is even constitutional given the makeup of the SCOTUS. The Senate will probably debate it to death and it won't pass. Probably won't become law. Judicial Committee has a better chance of getting it back by investigating for fraud.

I think the bonus bailout tax is a stupid idea too!

Look for it to have equal support from BOTH parties in Congress though...
