...police got a tip that the killer was in an apartment building about four blocks from my house, and there are dozens of cops all over my neighborhood right now!

One person has reportedly already been shot...I keep seeing my house on King 5 News, my whole neighborhood is surrounded.

Weird.

Fish on...

Watching it right now. I live right next to the Key Arena, and it was crazy hearing all the cops leaving the memorial.

Apparently some cops got a tip that the cop killer was there, and the first cops arrived got in a bit of a gunfight, and one of the cops got hit and just left in an ambulance...this is fukked up.

Now they're saying it wasn't another cop that got shot...the guy they took away in the ambulance was the suspect in the Halloween shooting, and he's the one who got shot.

They've got the Datsun B210 covered up in the parking lot now.

Being a suspected cop killer, I'm a little surprised he left the scene alive...for that matter, maybe he didn't...

Awesome quote from a Tukwila Police Spokesman:

"Medics have him, and he's being treated by them," Murphy said. "And the last I was with him, he was still alive."

Well if he's conscious and alert...the chest tube Harborzoo will insert along with the unlubricated (hopefully) catheter oughta' give him a moment of reflection and introspection into his misdeeds.

On the news a bit ago...

"We've confirmed that it was a 'person of interest' in the murder of Officer Brenton who was shot at the scene by Tukwila Police. We don't know if he is alive or not, but there didn't seem to be a sense of urgency in the medics or the ambulance driver."

No chit...a detour might be in order.

Sounds like they nabbed another suspect who tried to slip through the dragnet...busted him at the bus stop across the street from the scene.

Its tougher to convict a dead man. Unfortunately, this guy is shot in the head. If he lives on a tube, he probably wont go on trial.

Nobody wastes good money on a car cover for a B210.

I used to own a red 81 Datsun 210 HB. Shouldn't have gotten rid of it. Very dependable. Not surprised to see the car still in operating order.

I hear there were four cops who opened up after him after he tried to run, got cornered, and pulled his piece...gotta figure he got hit badly at least a couple of times.

Fuckin traffic is still piled up around here, and the news copters are still all flying around...I waved a beer at one while I was standing out in the yard...mebbe I'll be on the news smile

That Datsun was cherry. When the cops are done with it I want it.
I saw with my own eyes a '76 B210 start and purr after suffering a 50mph head on crash. The engine block was canted up at a 45 degree angle. I also saw that same car beat two f-150's, a Silverado, and a Dodge Powerwagon in a mud pit. All it had was some old snow tires on the rear wheels.

Is it possible for someone to be so stupid as to shoot a cop and then park the vehicle used in the parking lot of his apartment, cover it with a tarp and stay in the apartment like nothing happened? I figured the shooter would be in Alaska, Mexico or some other place by now.

Check it out? Hell, they paid KK ten grand to fly down to Hollywood and be a consultant on the film.

Note: at the end of the movie, you won't see the usual disclaimer from the HSUS that "no animals were harmed during the production of this film"...they refused to even show up once they heard KK was on staff, and rightly assumed that there would be significant harm to the goats...

Not to side track a fascinating and informative political debate, but...

"the man displayed a handgun and tried to flee on foot, prompting three detectives to shoot at him."

Good shoot or bad? Factors?

Anybody got a good link for an article on the arrest/shooting event?

What if he was fleeing and it was unknown whether or not he was armed? Good or bad?

How about fleeing and known to be armed? Good/bad?

If I were an authority, I'd also say that detectives fired after the suspect pulled a gun . . .

Since the only witnesses were probably the 3 detectives, by definition it must have been a good shoot.

In any event, I can't see how the public isn't better off with this guy off our streets. The only reason for keeping him alive is if he could provide useful information. But if he was truly a solo domestic terrorist whacko, the public interest would be served by pulling the plug.

I heard on the news this morning that his defense attorneys are going to get to talk to him for the first time today and they are calming that his rights have been violated. That he spoke to detectives before he was read his rights. Probably get off on a technicality.

Speaking to a cop before being read his rights doesn't violate his civil rights in the least...though some of what he may have said could be excluded as evidence from a trial. That being said, it'll be his burden to prove that it should be excluded...and it won't be much, if any, that gets bumped.

This guy ain't likely to get off on nothin'...if he even survives the arrest.

P.S. Claiming a violation of civil rights is ALWAYS part of the defense in a criminal trial...always...especially when they're guiltier'n'ell, 'cuz that's all they've got. It would be malpractice for the attorneys not to make the claim.

The suspect pretty much forfeited all his rights, including his right to life, when he pulled a gun on three detectives. That sort of action is just asking to go down in a firefight.

Correct. Miranda warnings, or "rights" only apply when someone has been placed under arrest. Prior to that, conversations with LE are voluntary. Whatever you say is what you said.

How the "use of force" issue pans out in this case will depend on the officers ability to articulate the facts. It sounds like their collective story is that he pulled a gun. Use of force, deadly at that, is justified in such an instance. Not required of course, but it has been deemed "reasonable" through past case law (graham v connor, tennessee v connor, etc.)

I am glad he didn't die. I am glad the officers didn't pump him full of lead and make sure he didn't live to take another breath. Is that what he deserved. Probably. I am glad that the responding officers showed the restraint and used force to eliminate a threat rather than fulfill some personal and moral agenda. It seems as though they put their professional duty ahead of other factors and acted in a manner appropriate for a person who has sworn an oath to protect and serve the people of this country.

As with many professions, I get the idea that a few paint a large part of the picture for the majority in the LE field, in the eyes of the public at least. My hats off to those that choose this as a career and give of themselves to help us all live a little safer life.

I agree, Coley...as much as he deserves to die, and as much as it costs to go through legal channels to do it, it's a lot more legit and that satisfies my mind more. The death penalty is a big deal, and is not meant to be meted out in the field except in cases of threat of death and/or severe injury, and only then if it's the only way to avoid the death or serious injury.

I don't say that because I want cops to be exposed in the field...quite to the contrary, I want to protect them from any possible dangers to themselves or their careers if they get caught up in a "he killed a cop, so I'm going to kill him" scenario...as personally satisfying as that might be, it doesn't serve the greater justice to do it that way.

The greater justice is served when no one else is killed by a gun, when the perp is busted by cops who do a great job (as they did in this case), and when the dude is tried and convicted on the strong evidence that the cops and the detectives put together for the prosecutor.

Doing it any other way opens the door for technicalities and violations of civil rights that end up letting dickheads like this dude either get off on a lesser charge, or sometimes something far worse...and it reduces the public's trust in the cops to take care of them, which is probably the worse thing that can happen to the force.

P.S. The OJ Simpson trial is a good counter-example, though it didn't involve shooting at the perp...in that case, my opinion is that they tried to frame a guilty man, and that man is now walking free. It's not up to cops in the field to determine the guilt or innocence of a suspect, the Constitution gives that duty to a citizen jury in the legal system.

since they are both in the same shape more or less......would setting them out at the water line in the Skagit mud flats at low tide work?

just a thought
