saw the Dead in 94 at portland meadows, chuck berry opened. freaking outstanding concert! downside, 2 day "hangover" and 6 month fear of contracting an std. it all worked out though..

More like my best string of concerts...I wasn't allowed to go to shows until I turned 12...my birthday is in April. By the end of June I had seen Iron Maiden (Twisted Sister opened ), Judas Priest (Great White opened, who managed to suck even worse then than they did after they made it "big"), Ozzy Osbourne...and then Iron Maiden again.
Later that summer I hit up AC/DC, George Thorogood, Steve Miller, and Fleetwood Mac. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Journey and find out that they were pretty damn good live, since I wasn't a fan at the time. I saw Queensryche, who I thought sucked...still do.
It was a good summer...I fondly remember the days when Seattle was *the* place for heavy metal bands to visit.
Radiohead. I saw them a few times, and have always been blown away. The time after the Kid A release I saw them at WRAmpitheatre, and they killed it. Tom (or is it Thom) Yorke can really blow.

Rage Against the Machine at the gorge. It would have been an even better show if Wu Tang hadn't of dropped out of the tour, but The Roots were a perfect substitute.

Santana at the Gorge in 89' or Zappa Plays Zappa at the Paramount last year. Musta seen the Dead and String Cheese Incident close to 30 times each with alot of good memories. Iron Maiden has always been great live as has been Slayer. -TBJ

Back in like I don't know maybe 91', I saw Pantera during their cowboys shows. They opened for Skid Row. Then I saw them again when Sepultura opened for them during the Vulgar shows.
Saw Nirvana and Pearl Jam so many times I couldn't count.
Now that I think of it, the coolest show ever was a small one. Mark Lanegan solo with Duff Mackagen, Dave Dederer, Ben Shepard, Barret Martin, and the guitarist from Dinosaur Jr.!!!! That was a great show.

Pantera opening for Skid Row.
That's like Motorhead opening for Winger.

I was at that show. That was awsome, the quincy police and the county sherrif were trying their damnedest to get it cancelled.
Been to a lot of concerts and can't really pick a best. I really enjoyed the festival events like lolapalooza, ozzfest, warped tour.
Some memerable concerts
Ozzfest 20?? primus, deftones, system of a down, slayer, rob zombie, original black sabath line up
Warped tour 20?? Green day, mighty mighty boss tones, other bands
Pledge of allegance tour in the Tacoma dome 20?? System of a down, ramstein, slip knot
Lolapalooza 199? snoop dog and tool
Gorge show 1996 eye hate god, white zombie, pantera

Saw one of the early Springsteen/Born in the USA shows -- before they'd bumped up to stadiums and it was awesome.
Peter Gabriel: US was fantastically inventive
Everclear before the break-up was incredible

The first Lollapalooza was pretty excellent...Jane's Addiction, Ice-T and Body Count, The Violent Femmes, Siouxsie and the Banshees, FishBone...several more that I can't remember off the top of my head.
Dancing around in the mud and pouring down rain at the fair grounds in Puyallup...pretty much ruint that place, and I don't think they've ever had another concert there since.
New Years Eve and they played in what is now Key Arena. Played all of Operation Mind Crime, did some New Year's Eve Toasts, drank some champagne, then they played all of Empire. They were all playing tight that night and was the best acoustic sound concerts I've ever been too.
Worst was any of the VanHagar concerts I've been too. They suck in concert. Great action, but sound like crap.
Of course I'm a HUGE Rush fan, but last year's Rush concert at the Gorge blew! Literally! High winds made for a *truly* crappy concert and you could tell that the band did not want to be playing there that evening.
Seen Qheenryche a couple of times and the are always tight. Best sounding live band out there. Last time I saw them they where recording a vidio at the Pheonix Underground. Envite only. It was awesome!

How about the best band I never got to see...............
I worked with an old guy from Chicago who only moved to Seattle a few months earlier. He kept trying to talk me into going and seeing this band at a downtown club. I figured he didn't know what the hell he was talking about so I blatently ignored him. After a month or so of this guy hounding me I finally called a friend of mine who worked sound for a lot of bands and was into that "grunge" seen. He informed me that yes they are a great band but the lead singer died the night before
I never did see Mother Lovebone live.
Still one of my favorite CD's

Saw Soundgarden at The OK Hotel in 1990. First show I drove myself to. Had no idea who the hell they were at the time. Thought they were pretty good but a little on the glam side with all that hair. Stood within touching distance. There was a band that opened that night I really liked, but they broke up right after and I cant remember who the hell they were. Boy those guys sure f*cked up, breaking up a Seattle Band in 1990 instead of waiting 3 more years.
Think it was 1993 when AC/DC came to the T-dome and a couple weeks later Ozzy played at the Coliseum in Seattle and I had tickets to both. I was pretty excited to see AC/DC but not so much about Ozzy, The AC/DC concert bored the hell out of me and I was very disappointed, Ozzy was excellent, right up there with all the Rush concerts I've been too.
Although not a concert, however, the first Sky River Rock Festival and Lighter Than Air Fair in 1968 was the first big gig I went to when I came back from the Navy. Wow.....
I saw Deftones when they opened for SlipKnot this year, wasn't impressed. Slipknot though was awesome. Saw Korn at the Roseland in 95, thought that was good. Biggest suprise show was Nickelback, went in to see three days grace and breaking benjamin (opening acts), and I'll be damned if Nickleback didn't kick ass.

dammit! don't get AuntyM started on "hanging" Chad Kroeger!
strangely, for all the shows i've seen, Blue Oyster Cult in '95 was the best - small club, dinner show! it was when all the 'old timers' started hitting the club/indian casino circuit. just some lights to go with the songs and those guys kicked serious ass. it seems that all the pre-MTV bands (priest, scorps, original van halen, cheap trick, kiss, etc.) had more stage presence and showmanship, as well as just fvcking rockin!

For pure showmanship and quality of live music, Meatloaf at the Gorge in 1994 or 1995. Very entertaining, and good clearly auduble music that wasn't overblown by some a-hole who wanted to turn the amps up to 11. Cheap Trick opened (one of the 5 or 6 times they opened for some band I saw) and they were spot on as well.
Tickets were free from Seafrist Bank, since I was an employee and my job was to hand out free foam frisbees before the concert at teh mobile ATM. We got unlimited free food and booze in one of the hospitality Yurts, along with free parking. Even got paid mileage.
Sat in the front row at a Rush concert in Seattle in 1985 or 1986, which was a great time, row 1, seat 2B. Roommate sat in line for 3 days to get those 8 tickets while we brought him food. 8 tickets, all front row, old school style.
Upgraded tickets to Aerosmith at White River a few years back. We were supposed to be in the grass, but it was raining. We showed up WAY early, checked to see if there were any fresh seats avaiable and ended up resting my elbow on the stage peninsula. That was an entertaining show, and we stayed dry. Wife said Steven Tyler had soft hands.

I was lucky enough in college to work security at concerts. Saw lots of shows from directly in front of the stage. Shows ranged from the Go Go's to Monsters of Rock. The stuff that happened between the stage and the barrier wall was always as entertaining as the show itself.
One of the best shows I saw was Tower of Power for the killer horns. Another good show for those who like the blues was Robert Cray. Pearl Jam at Benaroya Hall doing an acoustical show before only a couple thousand people was cool as well.

I saw Pearl Jam at the Moore Theater...that kicked ass. Alice in Chains at the Off Ramp (now Graceland) long before anyone heard of them was cool...saw all kinds of stuff at RCKCNDY when it was rolling...virtually every "famous" grunge band was there, though they were all taking turns being in each others' bands for a few years.
Never saw Mother Love Bone, who was the band to break the Seattle scene, bar none, 'til Andy died...and left it to Nirvana, who I also saw a few times and was far more impressed by live than I was by their studio albums.
Oh yeah, another good one was Pearl Jam at the Showbox. While watching one of the openers (I think Supersuckers or the like) this short dude with a jean jacket and a fly guy like hat was standing next to me. Didn't recognize him until he's like "great show huh". Looked down to find it was Eddie Vedder. That was perty cool.
I totally agree. A couple good friends of mine are huge Rush fans. I tagged along to the Gorge two years ago and was not impressed. They remind me of a Canadian Styx.
Whoever mentioned Cheap Trick, that must have been many years past as they were terrible when the opened for Heart at White River in Sept. of '08. I've heard better from no name cover bands.
Best Concert: Tom Petty at the Gorge 2008 or Warped Tour 2001
I'm jealous of all the great shows back in the day you all mention.

Okay. One more! Alice in Chains awhile back for the tsunami benefit at some refurbed warehouse place. They had several different artists come on stage to play with them like the singer of Damageplan, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Maynard Keegan and some others. Watching Alice in Chains do Zeppelin songs with Ann Wilson was incredible. Maynard also did Man in the Box!

Their snakes and arrows tour sucked the big boner recently. Sorry Brewer. Took Hunter there when he was 12 and it was somewhat anticlimactic. The Rush of old has since passed. Back in the day, with a few beers under the belt and a "contact high" from my neighbor, they were pretty freaking awesome. (not that I inhaled)

The only concerts I go to these days are country, the Kenny Chesny concert at qwest was an eye candy bonanza. I even saw a chick piss her skirt there. Gorgeous drunk blonde, I'm standing there talking to her hoping to get lucky when I hear some water running, yuck, she really had to go. Funnest concert was Ozzfest at the Gorge 2000 (I think), Godsmack, Pantera, disturbed, static X, Incubus, slayer, black label society and of course ozzy. For an old man Ozzy went wild swinging from some rope setup over the crowd with a water hose spraying full throttle, I couldn't understand what he was singing but it was fun. Spent 3 days camping over there getting way too drunk and killing some of the extra brain cells.

I saw Floyd once, front row center. Pretty good show. But the best of all time? Judas Priest,Oakland Coliseum. Hands down. And I've seen tons of bands from Alice Cooper to Motorhead to Slayer to Stanley Jordan ,list goes on and on. Priest was the best of all time in their heyday.

Tool @ the paramount was awesome, aling with the show they played called the rockstock festival @ the kitsap county fairgrounds with a band called Paw who kick major ass. The next Day Soundgarden and I think the screaming trees played and one of the best renditions of "just like suicide" was played solo by Chirs Cornell. Alice in chains opening up for vanhagar @ the tacoma dome was awesome as well. Fugazi @ DV8 WAS a damn good show. Sweetwater @ the Paramount or the Moore was awesomwe. Sweetwater had a knack for putting on a great enrgetic show. Tom Petty @ White river a few years back was great. Thanks everybody for all of the cool concert stories. Appreciate it alot.

i grew up with Rush back in 70s, seen them many times now. they were never known for thier high entensity. so if thats what your looking for they won't deliver. what Rush does deliver on is a tight clean sounding show. you have to be a true fan to really dig thier shows. i've never been a KISS fan in any form, from what i've ever seen from them they royally suck. what KISS does deliver though is a great theatric show, full of glitz. some folks really dig that and think a KISS show is the bomb! trully blinded by the light.
in closing arguments, to each his own on bands and thier live shows.

was that the turbo tour with dokken opening? or was it the painkiller tour with testament and megadeth opening? Priest has always kicked ass - another pre-MTV band that made their living by bringing it onstage! i saw them in 2004 when they had reunited with Rob and it was the first time i had seen them sober. i am still in awe today of how much ass they kicked at that show - a bunch of old farts having a great time onstage and blistering the fretboards like the days of old. that priest/dokken show was probably the best paring of bands i saw and priest's sound people did NOT fvck with dokken's sound - they let them tear it up, then priest came out and was even better.

Yer right...thanks for the reminder!
It was always cool to see Rob Halford drive his Harley out on stage...
Missing Queen with Freddie is one of my biggest music regrets.
Speaking of regrets, I missed George Clinton and Funkadelic last night at ShowBox...one of my friends was having her birthday party there.
Mudhoney Tad and Nirvana at the Moore, maybe 89, maybe 90, I forget
That would have been a great one! Way jealous! Saw mudhoney at a bunch of small venues and they usually had crap bands open up for them for one reason or another.
For me, all of the pre '94 shows I went to were at the top of my list. Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Melvins, Pearl Jam, etc. I saw them numerous times that I can remember, and some times that I can't remember, those were good too.
Recently there have been numerous "best" concerts including but not limited to Zappa plays Zappa, Dave Matthews, Iron Maiden, Alice in Chains, Tony Bennett, and Stone Temple PIlots. Out of those, I would say Stone Temple Pilots at Berkeley Greek Theater in 08 was my favorite. I have tickets to both AIC shows next month

Might go to the Alice in Chains show next month. On the 18th, Shawn Smith and his band "Satchel" is playing at the Crocodile. Tickets I think are 12$ on line. I'll be there.
I don't even recognize the names of many of the groups listed in this thread. Plus, I've never been a fan of heavy metal, either. So the best concert I've been to was Sky River Rock Festival III in 1969, with a lot of the same groups that played Woodstock that year. Unlike Woodstock, it didn't rain at Sky River. It was 3 days of sun, dust, beer, dope, wine, dope, beer, and just about continuous rock music. I wish I remembered more of it. I do recall having to wash about a half-inch of caked on dust off my car after I left. That was the last Sky River festival. Politics in every county made it impossible to obtain the necessary permits after that. I swear, middle-aged officials of every stripe in that era just couldn't stand the thought of young people having a better time on the weekend than they did. I'm glad I'm not like that.
I'm with KK on the small venues. I've seen a few good shows at arenas (Rush, U2, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, etc.), but every band is better when they're standing five feet in front of you. I must have seen 100 or more shows at smallish clubs in Austin while going to college, and too many were what I would call "great" to name them all. Something that was really cool about the scene in Austin was that big time acts would pop up at small clubs from time to time and blow the doors off the place.
I also got to see some amazing shows at off-beat venues. A few such interesting opportunities included Ween at Stubbs BBQ, Elvis Costello and the Attractions (no better live band EVER, in my opinion) at Willie Nelson's amphitheatre called the Backyard, and Tom Petty/The Jayhawks at the Bass Concert Hall on the UT campus. There was also a really cool outdoor festival, held out on some rancher's land in the middle of nowhere, featuring Fishbone, De La Soul, P-Funk (with a Mother Ship landing, of course), and a few others. I should also mention the first Lollapalooza, which had starpower galore and a few memorable moments.
I wish I could have been around Seattle when the grunge bands were playing the small shows. I was in high school in those days, and the grunge sound spoke to me like some sort of dark, demented angel (or some other rock 'n' roll sounding piece of badassness). I really regret never having seen Mudhoney, who were one of my favorite bands for years.
Mudhoney Tad and Nirvana at the Moore, maybe 89, maybe 90, I forget.
I BEGGED my parents to let me go to that one. It was just before I got my licence and no one else at my podunk dumfuk school had any clue who they were. Those fags were still rocking out to GnR & Motley Crue. Shame I missed it.
Mudhoney also headlined Ultra Lamefest on April 4, 1992 at the Paramount Theater with Seaweed, The Supersuckers, Pond and Earth. Another good Mudhoney show was pain in the grass when they opened for Aldo Nova, who was relentlessly booed when he came onstage after Mark Arm said he was a dick.

Another good show was Foo Fighters at JAMPAC benefit Kitsap pavilion 7/22/95, opening bands were Sky Cries Mary • Bjork • Afghan Whigs • Shudder to Think • Wool • Sweet 75. We didn't know what the future held for FF when we saw then then, just that it was "the drummer from Nirvana".

Ok, here's another (remembering these shows is giving me a flashback) Nirvana opened for Sonic Youth at the Moore on 8/24/90 with Dale Crover on drums. I remember most of that show as I was on crutches and they let my friend video tape the whole show.

Tool and Soundgarden.
How the fark did I miss that show?
I saw Motorhead a few years ago, I think at the Moore. It was awesome. My ears rang for two days, and it made me think I'm getting a little soft in my old age.

Dan----The "tools" that wanted to see Tool made me hate all tools....hence my current distaste of manual labor.....but I digress......I think the reason I didn't like that concert was because Soundgarden SUCKED....I loved them (at the time) and stood in line with bad acid backpain at the Alderwod mall after a particularly interesting evening at the Seattle center.
The highlight of that concert was carrying a particularly beautiful redhead out of the mosh pit.

You remember alot more about those days than I do Hank, lots of good SF bands did small concerts in High School football fields to get their starts. That time frame from 67 to 72 was a magical time in the Bay Area.

Big shows would have to be U2 Rattle n Hum at Sundevil Stadium. Tix were $5 and I had 9th row center stage on the floor. Dont remember much of it but the Stones and Guns N Roses at LA Coliseum was a bit wild and Pink Floyd was solid as well.

The Day on the green concerts in Oakland..... late '70's Aerosmith, AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac... I was too stoned to remember, I had a date with the hottest chick and.......a contact high thats it! I saw Carlos Santana at the Shoreline Amphitheater a couple years back, and AC/DC in Oakland last year, both those shows were unbelievable. Going to see Elton John in Feb.. GULP.... sheesh Im getting old.
My favorite concert was Def Leppard at the gorge. My grilfriend talked me into seeing U2 the last time they were in town. Not being a big fan, I was skeptical, but man, they sounded GREAT!!!!!
The Gourds. Hands down best show. Saw them a few years ago at the Tractor. Best concert "experience" was the Dead in Eugene mid 90's. Sunshine and lots of happy people and Jerry was on. Worst concert was Dead in Portland at the speedway shortly before Jerry died. He was not "on" that day. Another great concert was Stevie Ray Vaughn shortly before he died. That dude could play. I'm seeing a trend here.... KK I saw Johnathon Richmond and the Modern Lovers in Detroit as a college kid. Great show as well. Ok one more. Henry Rollins fronting Black Flag in the Cass Corridor in Detroit in High School. Holy crap that show was intense. At the time Henry had long hair. He asked some guy in the front row to pull it. Dude pulls it and Henry kicked him in the face knocking him out. Wild.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Have you heard his open letter to Ann Coulter?

my first rock concert ever would definitely rank right near the top. AC/DC's 3rd sold out night at the sea. center coliseum. for those about to rock (we salute you) world tour 1982. i was 12. but for the record, greatest hard rock/heavy metal show of all-time was; moore theater, halloween night, 1987. opening night of slayers reign in blood tour. some honorable mentions of the other 100's of shows i seen: van halen 1984. police, ghost and the machine tour. opening for iron maiden i heard this unknown band for the first time, guns-n-roses. i was standing right in front of axl rose, listening to 'sweet child' for the first time. i got goose bumps and yelled to my friend, "these guys are gonna be big, dude!" nirvana at green riv comm college. soundgarden playing a 'secret' pre-release show for badmotorfinger at the off-ramp. saw pearl jam play on maui in 1992. also seen beastie boys play on the beach at turtle bay resort, north shore oahu. janes addiction and butthole surfers at the king co. fairgrounds in enumclaw. metallica in the kingdome. and . . . eek-a-mouse jammin at speedy o'tubbs bar up in bellingham was unbelievable. ([censored]!!) i wish i could have seen Hendrix play!! at least i can look forward to a possible live appearance of lady ga ga! !!ROCK N ROLL AIN'T NOISE POLLUTION!! *(unless you count billy joel and elton john)
it was actually at the other fairgrounds, in enumclaw. we noticed one of the houses across the street wasn't selling parking spaces in their yard. they put some dumb 'No Parking" signs and barricades up and apparently went far away from the event for the night. there was nobody home. about an hour later, brian streeter (his idea), and me (lot attendant) had jam packed at least a hundred cars in the front and back yards, for $5 front row parking. not a very nice thing to do. BRIAN STREETER!! (lol!)
Not the best concert by any stretch, but we attended the Billy Joel Elton John gig at Key Arena last night. "The usual crowd shuffles in . . ." middle aged folks like me. I'm always a bit surprised to see some younger audience members who weren't even born when many of those songs were written. Never seen either of them before, don't own any of their albums, but have enjoyed much of the music for decades, altho it's probably classified more pop than rock. Even so, they've got some damn good piano skillz. But then I'm easily impressed by anyone who can deliver the goods from a concert grand. I couldn't tell for sure, but it looked like Elton John was playing a Yamaha, and it left me wondering, how good are they? Joel's looks like and sounded like a Steinway, but it carried no label, which I've not seen before.
For something different, Joel covered Purple Haze, and his guitarist did an impressive job.

That was an upright organ.....
. . . in the shape of a 9 foot concert grand piano, no less. No telling where comments about a 9 foot upright organ could go around this place however . . .
