Having spent many years working with and helping handicapped children and adults, that remark is tragically too typical here. Kind of surprises me that Vedder stooped down in the mud to start it off. I expect nothing less from others here but not Dave.

My wife’s brother has been in state care since a few weeks after birth. He was born retarded. He will never be able to live independently and that’s a tragedy. More the tragedy that with what we know now there were far better ways to care for him.
We do visit him, no doubt not as often as we should. We do provide for him to have the CD players and other luxuries the state can’t afford, because this state so dramatically underfunds the care for our most vulnerable. And perhaps because of my wife’s brother we do give generously to organizations that help the retarded. But changing the word we label them with will not help him. Retarded is what the doctors, and everyone else called him. Now somehow it’s an insult. I don’t think any label is an insult unless the one uttering the word thinks it is.
We can change the label and no doubt whatever new label we find will one day become a pejorative. At one time “colored" was considered a polite term. In Cuba a black person is often affectionately called Negrito, a term that has no negative connotations, and so it goes . . .

Dave's explanation makes sense but this one is truly lame. And,as Dave pointed out, to be expected here. Using the term "retarded" is pretty normal but using it loosely in a denegrating fashion is not.

My wife works with handicapped people and that entire workforce and culture has a very bad time with the word retarded. It took me a long while to convince her and some of her co-workers that the word just means slowed and nothing else. If you call someone a retard, then you being duragatory. Saying something is retarded is technically saying it is slowed. Most folks dont use or understand the word in its true context and percieve its something against handicap people. So, I'm guessing Sarah is caught up in this culture and by her stature and circumstances was probably expected to say something.

I was at a presentation once about being sensitive to minorities and people with disabilities. The presenter told us something that blew my mind. He told us that the word handicaped was wideley accepted as OK but in truth its highly duragatory. He told us that the term developed in the early 1900's. He said that disabled folks did not have the services available to them like they have now days and to get money they would peddle for money on the sidewalk. They collected the money in hats and somehow the phrase "handy cap" was used to describe them. Its now in the form of handicap. Not sure if the guy was FOS but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't lie in front of a crowd like that.

I don't think the point of this thread is to debate whether or not using the word "retarded" or "mongoloid" is ok or not...I think the point is that it's typically hypocritical to complain about everyone making her be "politically correct" when she doesn't feel she should have to be, and then her complaining when others aren't politically correct enough in her estimation.

I doubt she even understands the word "irony" enough to have an actual conversation about the topic.
