Went down to Eugene on Sat and Saw a bazillion! (OK, maybe 60-100) boats on both sides of the I-5 bridge about noon. Couldn't stop to count since it was the I-5 and I was driving, but it was pretty impressive.
Did anybody catch anything?
Coming back today on the 205 there were very few boats visible from the bridge. Of course, it was gusting to 40 mph, but what the hey?
Of course it was closed above I-5 today, also... Reports from my buddies who fished I5 this weekend were spectacular. Best was 6 for 8 on Friday.

From Joe Hymer, WDFW e-mail
• Bonneville Dam passage of Chinook through April 4 totals 1,193 adults. During the most recent five years, run timing at Bonneville has been late-timed, when compared to 10-year averages and to timing since 1980. It is still too early in the run to make any conclusions regarding run size. • Mainstem sport catch through March 28 includes 6,700 hatchery Chinook kept (plus 1,000 released) from 68,300 angler trips. Chinook handle (kept plus release mortalities) of upriver stock totals 3,900 fish, or 23% of the 17,200 available prior to a run update. • Through March 28, recreational effort and Chinook catch was tracking closely with preseason modeling. Catch rates likely decreased in the mainstem downstream of the Willamette but a catch estimate for March 29-April 4 is not yet available.

Heard today at certain points of the tide it was off the hook........... Apparently some of the best bites yet. I can't wait to see how many fish the nets get Wednesday night from 5:30-9:30pm..... Bet they do another 2600 fish or so... Keith

It wasn't that good for everybody! As for these fish staging; there is almost 40 miles of river from I-205 to Bonerville that doesn't have anyone on it other than a few plunkers. It's not like they always stage in the egg hole at the dam, or right above I-5. There are lots of places they could be holeing up that don't have guys pounding on them to verify they're there.

The last 2 days have been nothing short of spectacular. April 7th was probably the best herring bite I've ever seen on the Columbia...
We whacked limits the last couple days out there by 10am and will be back at it tomorrow....
Will we see 470K?? That I don't know but I can tell you the dam counts are gonna jump and jump high very soon.... There's some seriously large schooling of chinook in the mid-river....
Keith

Reports I'm hearing around town is that there's lots of fish from Hammond to I5 Bridge and I'm sure from there all the way to the dam.

That means Jdarr, Jdad and I can begin serious drinking a bit sooner in the afternoon. Fingers crossed. I hear we may see a few other boats out there.

A couple pictures from the last 2 days.... The freezer is starting to get a bit full, looking forward to summer kings!! In honesty, the fishing is good enough to limit a charter boat..... Keith
