Great post . . .I've been wondering that same question, so thanks all for the advice up there. I've been paralyzed about this topic for about 4 years so I haven't bought a fish in a long time, worrying about where it came from. My freezer's starting to yawn a bit now too, with only a few meals of last fall's fillets left, so I might have to break the paralysis, hit the store and shop around some,

This is a good buy.

Folks, let's do what ever we can to get these fisheries back to some semblance of healthy and sustainable. Work together, work alone, join a group like CCA or WSC, or not, I don't care. Let's just do what we can.

I got in on an early season batch of fresh halibut fillets from Alaska at COSTCO. $9.95/lb. I bought 20 pounds then vac packed and froze.

It is very fresh and freezes well.

I think it's at $10.95/lb now, but still a good deal.

I try to boycott commercial caught seafood, but after ordering seafood at a restaurant or buying from a store, market or off a boat when the freezer is low---- there goes that idea.

fredys had the sockey yesterday also the albys in monroe has butts usually for 4-6 bucks a pound when in season whole fish head off they fly it in from alaska or so they told me. for thouse intereasted.

question i want to go get tuna off the docks at westport this year. i am wondering how do you know when they are in and i heard the mid season price is the best? i was trying to get down there last year but was unable to locate when boats were comming and going and didnt want to make the haul to come home empty handed.

for us luck has been on our side for fish in the freezer. but tuna i would like to get to bbq and can and can't swing 500$ to go try for them.

That's one opinion, but not mine. I try to eat a variety of protiens with lean protiens (fish and poultry) more prominent than red-meat.

I've run out of fish, and therefore it has to come from somewhere. It is probably possible that our priorities are different.

The Olympia Seafood Co, is within view of my office, I have bought Ahi there before. I will go ask them about where their fish comes from and etc.

This has been an interesting thread.

Don't know about up there, but down here, check out the commercial docks, and there are signs directing you to which boat, and what price.

Mid season is best, and if its a good year (again, down here...) you shouldn't pay more than $.75/lb, whole fish.

BUT...an even better bet is to head to where we rec. guys clean fish. If a boat comes in plugged, you can usually help them with stuff in exchange for a few fish. I give away WAAAY more than I come home with to people who help out.

+10 for Central Market. I stop at the Poulsbo store. The stores are owned and managed by the local Nakata family and folks with that type of name know and understand seafood. Great supporters of local charities and groups that need assistance.

I haven't purchased fish (shrimp and scallops excluded) since 1986 in a store. Don't ever buy seafood at restaurants with the exception maybe crab legs or halibut & chips.

I do get a fair amount of it from a number of commercial fishermen I bank. We got some black cod the other day, and we usually get halibut, crab, tuna, and every once in a while ling cod.

If you need some of the above Ryan, let me know. Locally caught, and literally right off the boat. It is a mix of tribal and non-tribal commercials.

We also need to hit the jetty gain.

Black cod "butter fish" tried a hatchery fish (pellet raised) once and it was the best damn tasting thing ever! hard to cook right but the saying goes if it looks done grill it for 10 more min's burn the hell out of it ,Little seasoning (Johnny's). and its a fatty fish better than a springer NO JOKE!

Haven't bought fish from a store since farmed Atlantics in Maine (hey, at least they were native to the area) back in 1991.

They were mislabelled with the "silverbrites" for $1.99/lb. so I couldn't pass up the deal. What a windfall.... or so I thought.

It was good fatty fish, but I later discovered that it was rather bland.... and the beautiful red color was totally fake.

Never bought it since.
