Daily dips and dives should be expected, but I suspect there's still some steam left in this run.

Mid to later April counts were reduced due to sport catch of roughly extrapolated 1K per day.

Does an early peak make for an equaly early decline? Does last year's record return of jacks take the steam out of this run?
Only time will tell.

A truly "big" run tends to be bigger in ALL dimensions.

Tends to start earlier, peak higher, and tail off later.

So far this one is behaving as expected in 2 of the 3 metrics, esp. when compared to the past few years.

"Tailing off later" is sort of difficult to measure because the counts of the very last of the springers will be artifically truncated on June 15. Nonetheless, with a big "tail" we should still see some sustained passage numbers over the next few weeks.

That's my basis for speculating that the run still has some steam left.

The States changed the dates a few years ago to include Snake River Summer chinook ( with a similar life history.) The end of the month retains the data set.

And I quote directly from them and ODFW....

The run is expected to range from 310,000 to 370,000, said Chris Kern of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. While that could be the biggest return since 334,559 in 2002, it is substantially smaller than the initial prediction of 470,000.

from what i understand seine nets will be in addition to gillnets, they will use both methods not one or the other.

The way I see it is when they can clip 95%+ of the smolt going out then they can cut the bonking of the assumed wild fish....

Here's the clip rates for the upcoming returns...

Upper CR Summer Chinook

Brood Year 2005 = 76% ad-clip
Brood Year 2006 = 86% ad-clip

Keith huh

how will this work if the split between the tribes and non-tribals is maybe 10k each, the tribes will catch 10k and the non-tribal commercials will catch 5k, will the sports still get 5k clipped fish plus the release mortality for unclipped fish that we release or will they reduce the 5k to a lower number that includes the release mortality of unclipped fish that would be equal to 5k ?, there`s a possibility that we could and probably will lose fish.

Tremendous numbers scootin' by the dam cam earlier this evening. They should post another BIG day for 5/7 on Monday.

If y'day was 6700, today will probably be in the 10,000+ range

I can see one more peak coming... Reason being the Lewis River hasn't had any sort of significant movement of fish yet. In years past the first peak has averaged May 7th, needless to say this season has started the slowest I've seen on record. Either the Lewis will be a bust (run predicted at 6000) or it will show late with the last push of Bonny fish... In years past, the Lewis has had a peak about a week behind the peak of the Bonny fish.....

We'll see....

Slab you were right.. Talked to my bio buddy last night, the majority of the returning fish are 2 ocean fish or 3 year olds since there pen reared for almost a year before being tagged and released..They are worried about this and are looking at the hatchery practices as the culprit.

I don't care if I am right or wrong, as long as the wild fish stand a chance.

This past week, rather than fishing, I volunteered to spend time with local fith graders. They are our future.

Don't get lonely now, if it's just not right. It makes me sad to see Harvest Management is still only worked up over the impact numbers.
