Is that a threat? Wow...............the government is going to shut down. Sounds like a reason for a party, not a concern.

It's a good thing that all the Tea Baggers and other assorted nuts that got elected last cycle on a "We must create jobs!" platform haven't been wasting their time on being Birthers, going after abortion, and saving big bucks by trying to defund NPR.
The funny thing is that all those who voted for them, including many of the whackjobs right here on this very website, won't mind one bit...because they'd rather foist their untenable social opinions up the flagpole than go about the actual business of running a country, too.
Fish on...

I think the best will be when we get to see the GOP hopefuls debate before they go into the Iowa caucus...talk about a hotbed of fruitcakes and nutjobs.
If any GOP'r wants to win the Iowa caucus, they'll have to come somewhere far to the right of Pat Robertson, call Obama a Nigerian Muslim, and blame the Japan earthquake and resulting nuclear fiasco on Al Qaeda...if they don't, they won't win Iowa...and if they do, they'll have to explain themselves for the rest of the campaign.
Won't be too hard during the runups, since they'll all be debating each other, probably trying to prove who's the biggest fruitcake (cornering the fruitcake vote is the lynchpin to the Republican nomination)...but then they'll have to debate on a national scale with folks who don't support opinions that any random 3rd grader knows are retarded...and the worse thing ever, in the history of America will happen...
A black Nigerian Muslim socialist will be re-elected...and it will be all their own fault.
Fish on...

Bachmann could run away with it in Iowa...but that should, from now on, be considered the kiss of death to a Republican hopeful...even the dingbats and nutjobs from other corners of the country think Iowa caucus members are dingbats and nutjobs.
A smart GOP wannabee should skip Iowa altogether...you'd have to get so fuckin dirty to win Iowa that you could never clean up enough to win anywhere else.

They already threw one old man to the wolves because they knew they didn't want to ruin the career of any up and comer...problem is, there aren't any up and comers who aren't nuts running around in the bottom of their cookie jar right now.
Who's the next sacrificial lamb? Dimwits like Palin, Bachmann, Santorum, etc., are good choices (they aren't going anywhere anyway), but they don't even pass the straight face test for the PTA, much less the Presidency...throwing one of their own to the wolves so they can start planning for 2016 is one thing, making themselves look even more ridiculous by putting up a sock puppet is worse...
They need an elder statesman who's career is pretty much over anyway, who won't mind lending even an air of legitimacy to their cause, and won't be hurt by being soundly whooped.
They gave up McCain last time...who's turn is it to take one for the team? Trot out Colin Powell to run against Obama? That'd be interesting...how about Joe Lieberman?

Todd Reps could run Bozo the Clown and he would have a good chance since Pres O is gonna have to explain why Gitmo is still open, why we are still in Iraq, why his plan for Afghanistan hasn't worked, why he hasn't created any jobs other than Czars and IRS employees, why the price of gas is $5 a gallon and he has no long term energy plan, and the list could go on and on and on. Healthcare could be a 3 night debate mini series all on its own.

Healthcare could be a 3 night debate mini series all on its own. The reason that this is becoming so comical is that even accepting everything you just typed as true...Obama is still going to blast anyone the GOP can put up. They've got nobody but fruits and nuts willing to run...anyone with half a brain who really wants to be President (and let's be honest, that might be an oxymoron right there) won't throw their hat in the ring against Obama. They'd rather wait wait four more years, if they actually value their political career...and if they're really lucky, the Tea Baggers and their particularly nutty and fruity fan base will fade into the wordwork by then. If they don't, they'll be stuck in the same conundrum they are in now...no one with half a brain will cater to those nutjobs, and no one can win the GOP nomination without those nutjobs. If I were into conspiracy theories, instead of pinning the creation of the Tea Baggers on Dick Armey and Justice Thomas' wife, I'd pin it on some very crafty Democratic think tank...because the nuts who created the Tea Party have done more damage to the GOP than any Democrat could ever do. isn't the armed forces part of the federal government and their pay will stop Nobody is revealing the plan on which essential personnel will remain working. Usually national security will remain. I guess we'll see come the end of the week. My prediction is that when the government shuts down. Newt Gingrich will have Obama, and Biden, assassinated in a coup leaving Boner in charge with the rest of the teaparty.

Ryan's budget plan does two things...cuts a bunch of older folks out of Medicare/Medicaid, and gives a huge tax break to the ultra-rich.
It's nothing new, and fully expected from a young GOP upstart...but if he pushes it, he'll get mashed in any national election...he'll only be able to keep his seat in a conservative district, and his budget plan will never pass.
As usual...pandering to the base, without offering anything that will actually solve any problems...unless your problem is that you're ultra-rich and don't like paying taxes.*
Fish on...
Todd
*or if your problem is that you're old, and need healthcare, but don't want it...it'll solve that problem for you, too, by putting your healthcare into the stock market to make others rich, while putting your health at risk. Like I said...bidness as usual from the Tea Baggers.

Well, yeah...that was my point...there is not one single viable GOP candidate for 2012...yeah, whoever they put up will rant and rave, energize the Tea Baggers, and win 47 to 49 percent of the vote, because the faithful will vote for anyone with an (R) after their name, no matter how retarded and imbecilic they are (possibly reflecting the intellectual level of their voting base? Book it...)... That being said, there's no one in their right mind on the GOP side who would even consider running in 2012...that's why you get the list you have now, a whole bunch of wannabees who are clearly not in their right minds. Hank, there's nothing to be come unglued about...it's the same ol', same ol'...cut entitlements, put whatever you can in the stock market, and give tax breaks to the ultra-rich.
The funny part, as always, is that somewhere in the neighborhood of 46% of the people in the country will vote for that person who runs, anyway, even though everything that person stands for runs directly counter to their own self interest...except, of course, for thumpin' the Bible, ranting about guns, and not particularly liking people who don't look like them.
It's a sad state of affairs when that has become the way it works over there on the GOP...but it's kinda been that way for a while.
"Look! A negro is stealing your guns and wants to outlaw Christmas while giving away free abortions!"
...and while the morons look that way, they get absolutely assfucked on everything that is actually relevant to their lives, and like it.
Fish on...

A recount only if Prosser wants one. He's clinging to a 585 vote lead with a couple dozen precincts that haven't been counted. His problem is those precincts have been voting about 60-40 Kloppenburg.
The way the unions were energized against him I'm surprised the vote's as close as it is. If she had lost you can bet there would have been a recount, with uncounted ballots found in car trunks for weeks. I'm sure the Teabagger base got energized as well. As long as there's union people and/or working-class people to destroy, Republicans will be there.

This wouldn't be an issue right now if the Dems had bothered to pass a budget last year. Everything they like would be funded. BS Hank. Obama created a bi-partisan commission to reduce the debt because of the fiscal crisis. The GOP ignored the recommendations, allowing tax cuts and playing politics. This ones on the GOP.

Often thought that this country has been pretty lucky. Where would be if the current doofi in "leadership positions" had been there in 1775-1789, 1860-65, WWI, WWII.
Is it that we now have no real leaders or that crisis brings out good leaders?

So I skipped work this morning to celebrate this gov't shutdown. I was supposed to respond to some Fed comments to a design I did. I figured with the shut-down they wouldn't be around to send the review.
I was wrong about that and had to have a 30 min teleconference aboard my pontoon boat. Did anyone get shut down?

Now that the shutdown has been avoided, does that mean we can get back to the important work of being a birther, decrying NPR and Planned Parenthood, and trying to decertify public employee unions?
We can leave the little details like the econonmy, jobs, and the budget for next September, right?
Fish on...

Kicking the can down the road is the precursor to the actual job of Congress...
Everyone kicks the can down the road, but the real work of Congress is seeing which side of the aisle can be blamed for it the most when election time comes around.
No one seems to want to actually do anything...seems the best way to get elected/stay elected is to actively sabotage anyone actually doing anything, and then try and aportion blame for nothing getting done...preferably to your opponent personally, and failing that, his/her party and try to get 'em with guilt by association.
Actually doing something is fraught with risk...one, as noted above, no one on either side of the aisle wants to actually do anything, so you're going to get opposition from all sides...two, no matter what you do, if actually do get something done proactively, it will be so amended and fukked up by the time it passes that it won't work, and you'll be blamed for it, even though you're not the one who amended or fukked it up.
Much easier to do nothing, and then try and blame the other side for nothing getting done.
Fish on...

Here a little partisan c/p. While Republicans wanted to cut more spending in Saturday's early morning compromise to keep the government open, they think they got the better of the deal. Here's why: HR1 was originally to seek spending cuts of $32 billion until Tea Party conservatives insisted on more than $ 60 billion. House Speaker John Boehner won more cuts than he originally sought and got the Senate to agree to votes to defund the health care reform law and groups like the nation's largest abortion provider Planned Parenthood - once votes Senate Majority leader Harry Reid said he'd never allow to come to the floor.Back on February 3, Reid called $32 billion in cuts "extreme" and "draconian." At a news conference New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., agreed, "I happen to think some of their cuts are extreme and go overboard. But every week they keep upping the ante and proposing extreme cuts." Over the next decade the cuts are expected to save hundreds of billions of dollars. The deal mandates a host of studies and audits of Obama administration policies. It also blocks additional funds for the IRS sought by the Obama administration and bans federal funding of abortion in Washington, D.C. The history of offers on this bill goes something like this. Democrats first offered no cuts, then $4 billion, then $6.5 billion, then $33 billion, then settled at $38.5 billion. Boehner made numerous adjustments to his offer in recent days too, but started at $32 billion, then with a Tea Party push went to $62 billion, then dropped to $40 billion, then $38.5 billion. Democrats claimed they met Republicans halfway after the $10 billion in cuts that already passed this year were approved. They settled late Friday night at three and a half times more. Boehner came in $8.5 billion higher than the halfway point between his high offer of $61 billion in cuts and the Democrats opening bid of zero cuts. It was not a totally lopsided bargain. Dems have some silver linings. There were no votes on defunding the EPA or PBS and NPR. Democrats fought for and won a $2 billion cut from the Department of Defense, knocking the military appropriation for the rest of the year down to $513 billion. But the GOP had to be able to see this as a win in the end, because it is puny compared to what they want to do next. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's 2012 budget resolution proposes cuts of $5 TRILLION in the next 10 yrs. But the resolution is a non-binding roadmap for the committees to use as they approve tax and spending bills for next year, the resolution will never be signed into law by the president. The next battle with consequences begins in a matter of two short weeks when the accumulated U.S. debt will be nearing it's $14 trillion legal limit. So Congress will have to vote to raise the ceiling so Uncle Sam can borrow still more money. The administration has said it will need to be raised between April 15 and May 31 or the U.S. could default and create a new fiscal crisis of unknowable magnitude. Fiscal hawks plan to demand strict, enforceable spending caps, triggers for across the board cuts, and austerity measures in exchange for raising the debt limit. This short-term agreement was just a beginning.

Yeah I think you got it right Todd. All over funding for cases of condoms. They can provide condoms to sailors but not to PP. The GOP can go suck tailpipes and take a hit of greenhouse gases. The Dems are not blameless either as they backed down to the GOP and showed weakness. Time for them to nut up! Whatever happened to moderates - seems that the right is going more conservative and the left is still too liberal.
I'm essentially non-essential. I have more seniority and experience than the few that would have worked but was told I might be called in. Funny how they choose. Wife was going to work because she was funded for a few weeks. Was going to go stand in line at the unemployment office then go down to Oregon to live on the river and fish until October 1st and mail a few resumes out.
Oh well maybe next weekend.

You have to admit, the reason why NPR and PP are on the right wing chopping block is pandering to their base...their very base, base.
Get rid of corporate tax breaks and the Bush tax cuts for the rich, and you'd do a hella more good for the deficit than you'll do cutting a thousand NPR's and PP's...but somehow that base base has been convinced that it's good for them to have the tax cuts and corporate loopholes. Talk about suckers...they vote directly in contradiction to their own well being...and will continue to do so as the right wing throws abortion, Nigerian muslims, and immigration up as a smokescreen.
Sad to watch...must be even more sad to be one of those idiots.
