Well.... after spending $50 a week in gas just to travel the 12 miles each direction to work. I became totally sick of forking over that much money just for the commute. If I wanted to bank fish add another $50, boat fishing $100.
I finally broke down a traded in my f150 for a 4 cylinder, 2 wheel drive Ranger. I know, my Man card have been officially revoked. However, it is nice to go 2 weeks without filling up. even then it is $60. Haven't taken the boat out once this year. either been catching rides or plunking, which has been very successful this year....
wondering if other have made any changes.

the difference between $3/gal and $4/gal = about $20/week for me, so not really any changes here except $20 more per week.

Just back from a trip to Banks Lake. With a one ton diesel truck and camper, towing an 18 foot boat, total fuel bill, including boat gas was roughly $200.00. But hey it was worth it. We got nearly five pounds of fillets. (:-)
Headed out on a longer trip next week.

Haven't felt much of a pinch yet. My office is 5 miles away. But I try to keep unnecessary trips to a minimum. Like driving to Spokane for ONE soccer game for my daughters select team. Ughhhhh

but charging $34.95 a pound for salmon fillets is a criminal offense. Copper River Sockeye, on "sale" at local Albertsons $13.99/lb. A 6# fish, minus the head, $72.00. LOL SUCKERS!

I had to kill 4 people and steal all their money to make up the difference. I supposed you threw gasoline on them and let them on fire PP style! Anyway back to topic. I commute to work and the other half works telecommutes. I did scratch my Memorial Day fishing trip which would have cost about $200 in gas. River a little high for summers. Got to road trip to Vancouver next weekend for a graduation. Was thinking about the Kalama but that option is closed for springers. Taking a few weeks off and going fishing later next month for about a 10 day trip. Hoping prices drop.

Love to fish, need a boat to go fish, need a truck to tow my boat. Thats the way its been and always will be for me. Fishing is #1 on my hobby list, and will always be. Gas prices ain't stopping me from doing what I love.
Beyond fishing, I'm still always active, heading up to the mountains skiing, the coast to surf, etc. Little toyota prius aint gonna get that done for me...

Paying by the liter should be fun.
Like $6 a gallon sorta fun! I am really hoping that prices take a dive before my annual fall migration south to canadian waters. At the going rate, it would be cheaper to fly. I have been feeling the pain for sure. Many of my best early season options involve a fair amount of driving, both by car and by boat. I have skipped several weekend and day trips that I would have taken in the past due simply to the unjustifiable expense.

It's been on my mind since I just paid the most ever for a fillup in my Denali. 128.00 *ouch* I commute to work in that rig but I only have to go 3-4 miles so it's all good. I was thinking about a larger boat this summer.... Selling the Arima and going with a 22-26 footer. However the gas prices have me thinking it would be really nice to continue fishing the salt for an entire day on less than 25 gallons of gas...kicker included..and I run far. The Fukkin speculation and robbery is getting out of control.

So, I just penciled out the gas cost for a fall run to the Kispiox. Something like $1,000. Perhaps it will not be quite so crowded this year? BTW this is a pretty cool chart for calculation driving costs in B.C. http://www.elowermainland.com/Distance-Chart.asp?Community=Hope

Dave, In my rig I spent just over $600.00 in fuel for a 9 day trip last year. Where you including the 'mileage expense' figures from that website in your calculations? I don't know WTF that expense is for.
Either way, for you guys in a smaller car staying longer than I, it shouldnt amount to 1K in expenses.

I never change any habits due to gas prices. I have always figured if I am going to spend my most valuable resource (time) doing something. Then I am willing to spend the money to do it.
The economy in general has had a muuuuch bigger affect on my spending habits (including travel). 2 years of operating on the razors edge and I have second thoughts about buying a pack of gum, and then I wonder if I can get by chewing on the gum I already have some more.

SG: I don't know where their milage cost data came from. I just used their miles times my projected cost of about $6.00 a gallon. Clint tells me its more than that now and I know it gets even more spendy the farther north you go. We will be towing a raft and have two weeks worth of gear, plus a 100 lb dog. I used a milage estimate of 14 MPG. I suspect $1,000 won't be too far off the mark. I will bet you a Kokanee, which costs more than gas up there, to be consumed on the hallowed ground, my number is closer than your $600.

i've always been a cheapskate when it comes to fuel prices. i've never owned anything bigger than a 4 cylinder, and my 4x4 tacoma pulls my 14' sled, which takes $25 to fill the tank for a day of fishing(at current prices), just fine. if i'm bank fishing i take the corolla that gets 35mpg.
no sympathy for the guys that commute to work in fullsize trucks here.

Gas prices ain't stopping me from doing what I love. Yup. I end up like Stam and it costs me more to drive around. I'm also probably pissier than usual. I'm hooked like a junkie. Honestly, it would probably have to get a lot more expensive for me to change much. I do have a smaller car so I don't have to drive my SUV everywhere. And my power boat has a 90 hp Yamaha that sips compared to a lot of the stories I hear. I'd love a bigger boat but don't want to start paying 2 or 3 times more per day than it currently cost me. -AP

question. How high does the price have to get for people to really change their driving habits? I think you can see from the above posts many folks already have. That is also shown by national gas consumption data. It will be going down some this summer, but I predict we will never again see gas at less than $3.00 per gallon.

Your probably right DV as oil prices are tied to the dollar and it has devalued 20% in the past two years. The lower the dollar value on international money markets the higher the price per barrel as the exporters maintain the value they want and get. Not a lot of competition in OPEC.

Agree. does not help that speculators buy and sell the same goddamn barrels of oil several times throughout the day driving the price up each time....

My commuter is a truck with 216K miles on it and gets about 16 mpg. It owes me nothing. Gas is going to have to go out of sight for me to drive a little death trap.

Generally speaking, it has had an impact on my lifestyle. I joined a vanpool for the commute to and from work, and that's proved to be a great savings, if mostly in terms of wear and tear on my vehicles. I've also been working with the wife to ensure that we get the most out of our trips to Olympia (about 30 miles each way) so we will take a minimal number of trips.
As regards fishing, for the most part, I haven't thought twice because of gas prices when invited to take a great fishing trip (though I have noticed the consequences afterwards). On the other hand, it's apparently been at least in the back of my mind on a day trip basis. While I used to drive all over the west side of the state fishing this time of year (sometimes all the way to the east), I have been doing my fishing much closer to home this year, by comparison. The bright side of this, however, is that I will be forced to explore more of my local waters to seek out some cool zipperlips. The searching can be crappy, but the rewards have created a lot of my favorite fishing memories.

Good truck Jerry, I am driving my 96 Ranger as much as possible when I don't need to drive the F-150 for work or towing the boat. 18mpg beats 12mpg for sure. It has 220k on it (new motor last year) and still going strong.
Gas prices have affected me in that clients are a bit tighter on their budgets for most projects these days. Part of which is them getting multiple bids, which costs all of us in the business a bit more cause we don't get all of them. . .. . . .more driving without getting paid. . . .
I also try to group my material runs better. . .has actually made me a bit more efficient which is a plus.

plus the added Milf factor of Snohomish Bar scene is a win-win... Does this mean you're giving up the MILF trolling at Toys-R-Us or just adding another dimension to your repertoire? The Antique strip in Snoho is an upgrade from T-R-U. . . .less children and the drinking establishments are right next door. . .. .

Fuel prices not bothering me much at all. My biodiesel cost me right at $1.00 per gallon to make. My wife drives the Excursion 7.3l, 44 gallon tank which averages about 14 MPG in town and 16-18 on HWY. So anywhere from 600-750 miles per tank. Only cost $44 per fillup plus about 2 hours a week to make the biodiesel. NOT BAD! I drive a 96 Ford Explorer. Just turned 257,000 miles, I have put all but the first 32,000 on the car. Not bad either! Gets around 17 per gallon. This car is on it's last leg! As soon as it dies(which sometimes I think it never will) I will be replacing it with a diesel mercedes probably? Then I will be totally non relient on any for of foreign oil. I will then be saving enough money each month to make most peoples head spin! badass dude. Rock on.

1997 Ford Ranger 4/4 with 218,000 miles on it and I still get 19 mpg. 50 miles round trip to work and back. Exact same here JG, just turned 222k. Gotta admit the ole V10 has had a little more solitude lately

I was up at browns camp (coast range)atv riding this weekend, and by the looks of it, gas prices havent seemed to affect the off roaders much. Every nook and cranny of that place was full of every type of off roader, and tent, trailer, etc imaginable. No parking at Rogers camp, or day use area. It appeared that at least 3/4 of the people were from washington state judging by the license plates. by far the most wash. people i have ever seen up there. Washington doesnt have good ATV areas? (only been to capital myself).

It is really a big increase in Gas. It really affect me and my family. My most of the cars are running on a gas and it is going to be difficult for me to maintain a financial balance at home. Need to find a solution over it.

The goal in retirement was to have a place that was close to most everywhere we needed to go. Even the hunting and fishing can be done in a 10 to 15 mile range. So far we are weathering the prices just fine.
I was up in Canada last week. It was a 1.27 per litre on average in Alberta, more in B.C., but the real crime is a 1/2 rack of Kokanee is around $28.

The Kokanee price includes the taxes for the free health care.

Maybe they can afford the beer since they dont have to pay $1,000 a month for health insurance.

Okay, when you're on the boat this summer, you'll have to bring a case or two along to convince me.

Come on those poor oil companies are not making any more profit from these price gouges err I mean hikes. Those poor hardworking CEO's need all those millions to continue to pay their servants in all of their houses.

Well, since this thread originally was about gas prices, this will get right back to it. I'm going to stick closer to home this summer and fish out of Westport. I saw some catch stats showing more fish per rod were caught in Area 2 than MAs 3 and 4 during summer. So I figure I might as well have better chance at fish and save gas, too. You'll have to run down this way and jump in the boat for a day or two.

If you need a deckhand Rick, let me know.
Gas prices have kept us close to home. I'm cheap. The thing is, we've found a lot of fun things to do around here, and we end up spending more time with each other, mom, dad, and kids all together, rather than everybody going their own ways.
Hunter and I have been digging out potholes in the driveway (about 750 feet of a circular driveway) over the past three weekends, and then repairing them. Taking the time to teach a teenager how to use a pick and shovel "the right way" has been rewarding for both of us. My 15 year old son even gave me a hug last weekend after working his ass off. Go figure that a teenager would appreciate being taught the value of hard work. ( I had taken him to a sniper stalk excercise event the day before and this was his payback to me. )
Adventures afar can be great and epic, but sometimes you don't need to look very far away from home for each day's fun.
