Let me get this straight the Longshoremen are pissed because the grain terminal is using Sub-Contractors that have hired labor from a different union? Man, if that isn't solidarity amongst the AFL-CIO I don't know what is....A really great reason to shut down every major port in the state.

Yeah, it's always good to hold hostages, cut brake lines, and threaten cops with baseball bats.

I like to piss people off by calling them welfare recipients. I figure if I got to pay to fund the port and the port provides them jobs, then we are in fact subsidizing their jobs. Perhaps they should lower their wages to a level that the port can function without my money.

Well, I could easily go along with elimination of tax subsidies for port districts. We've paid taxes to the Port of Olympia for 80 years, and it's never been close to breaking even. I'd think that tax money should have turned the port into a high quality public park that all the country citizens who paid for it could enjoy. Lotsa' waterfront.

I'm not sure, but I think this Longshoreman might be a little upset.

Poor little fella, maybe if the reporter had brought ice cream or candy the 'man' would have been a little more polite. By the way, if you don't want someone taking photos or video of what appears to be picket assignments, maybe you should post them INSIDE the Union Hall...just a thought.

I think tempers are on edge since there is a very real and very organized effort to bust all things union and all things that protect an employee. Welcome back the sweatshops.

Ah, back to the first post and the fact the company hired union labor just not the longshoremen union. Explain again how that company is trying to bust the union.

I guess I would be pretty upset if they tried taking this from me too.

Quick internet search turned up this tibbit.

In 2007, average annual full-time wages for 15,000 workers at 29 West Coast ports topped $136,000, according to the Pacific Maritime Association, which negotiates and administers contracts between ports and the ILWU. Longshoremen earned an average of more than $125,000, clerks more than $145,000 and foremen more than $200,000.

Workers also get benefits packages worth $50,000 per year, according to the association’s 2007 report.

Thats an average of 500 Longshoreman per port, seems alittle on the high side.

Weeker?

As a pensioned IMA member, not yes but hell yes. We do not all have to be Teamsters or Longs or IMA. Employees have a right to CHOOSE their union and employers have federal requirements on how they do business also. The union brotherhood is varied and diverse but thuggery to bring new employers into your union at another unions expense was rejected before I was born.

Dispute over workers

The situation at the plant has been simmering since November 2010, when EGT told the ILWU it would not be hiring union Longshoremen to man its giant grain plant — jobs the union had counted on and the Port of Longview had assumed would be given to union workers when it finalized its 30-year lease with the company in 2009.

However, EGT said the lease gives it the option not to hire union workers. In its lawsuit against the port, EGT wrote, "The lease did not impose any obligation whatsoever upon EGT to utilize union labor at the terminal, much less obligate EGT to utilize persons who are represented by Local 21 of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union."

The Port disputes this, saying it had a working agreement with the union that EGT knew about when it began negotiating the lease in 2007.

"If you disagree, then we have a serious dispute" that needs to be addressed in court, wrote Port Executive Director Kenneth O'Hollaren in court documents
