I saw lots of fish played and even caught my first of the season (and 17 years) on a black #14 chronomed, nine foot leader. A solid takedown and a solid 16" fish. Great day to be on the water!

I live on the South end of the Lone Lk, and don't fish it much, but have a couple times this year.

I was practicing my fly casting off a dock the other day and started getting tired of cast after cast, so I started stripping in my fly (green body, brown hackle(?), wet) and a large female hit my fly! How cool, my first fly-caught fish over 6 inches! I have a pretty good eye for fish over 22 inches, and I'd say she was just under. She was in full spawning colors and when I released her, she lost about a dozen eggs.

Seems like I am seeing most fish rising on the surface near the shoreline. This also matches the recent reports I have received from other people fishing the shoreline. Must be looking for shallow water to spawn?

This is a great time of year to fish Lone, as it's pretty protected and almost in the rain shadow.

Whoops, Congradulations Mike on your first fish of the year!

I'd love to be able to offer to join you, but I only have a canoe or kayak for Lake fishing, and neither are real condusive to fly fishing I find.

If you see a guy fishing from the southernmost dock however, stop and say hi!

Will do. I'll have to explore that part of the lake. I caught my fish right off the launch area.

Kneel in your canoe, providing a lower center of gravity and paddle from just aft of the center of the canoe. I used only a canoe for my lake boat for about 22 years, catching many types of fish, using every method. I also hunted ducks out of it, shooting at every odd angle.

Give it a try, and if your knees get sore, bring one of those pads for gardening.

We also used our kayaks for some bottom fishing, and have even used them for salmon fishing in the San Juans.

If it floats, you can fish from it. Best of luck.

Dogfish,
You are correct, and I was a bit quick with my comment on fishing from a canoe.

I am much more comfortable fishing from my kayak, but have not yet tried fly casting from it. I do fish from my kayak for salmon, but mostly trolling.

I really enjoyed your post last year, w/ pics, of your lingcod kayak fishing adventure!

I remember you stating it could not take a lot of pressure, but just in case it's on or near Whidbey, can you PM me the location. It looked a little like the central part of Whidbey I remember thinking.

Thanks,
Jeff

PS: The canoe problem for me was the wind drift. I have that solved I think now with a rope/weight deal I picked up at a garage sale this winter.

It's used for measuring depth, but I think it will make a good little anchor for my canoe or kayak!

Doesn't take long to get blown across Lone Lk when the wind comes in from the south.
