Not surprisingly, you'll find that they are not only Republican talking points, but they are parroted by dipshits across the land, including dipshits here, who seem to have no idea that they are screwing themselves... Again. And again. http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-things-rich-people-need-to-stop-saying/Fish on... Todd

I call it the " I Want More, Better, or Different" obsession. We all have it to some degree or other. But for some, it's an unending dissatisfaction with life in general. It's nothing new, it's just more common. Grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Keeping up with the Jones's Poor me, poor me, pour me another I'm just a victim We're taught to not feed animals, lest they become dependant......... We're taught that survival of the fittest is a good thing...... But somehow it doesn't apply to us.

What a load of [Bleeeeep!].. My sister and her husband are 1%. You know how they got there, by spending the last 12 years in school getting their asses kicked to become doctors. They deserve the money IMHO. There are alot of people like that.
My other sister is also in the 1% she got there by hard work as well, spending years over seas working for a large Multi national corporation.
All it really takes is hard work and sacrifice.
BTW, here is quote # 7 to add to your list.
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Governments reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better." -- Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006

Todd Unless they're Dem talking points? "It is hard to ask more of households making $250,000 or $300,000 a year. In large parts of the country, that kind of income does not get you a big home or lots of vacations or anything else that is associated with wealth." -- Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) Aren't those #'s true in Gay Bay and NYC?

. . . "So "anyone can get rich" isn't just untrue, it's insultingly untrue. You can't have a society where everyone is an investment banker. And you can't have a society where you pay six figures to every good policeman, nurse, firefighter, schoolteacher, carpenter, electrician and all of the other ten thousand professions that civilization needs to survive (and that rich people need in order to stay rich).
It's like setting a jar of moonshine on the floor of a boxcar full of 10 hobos and saying, "Now fight for it!" Sure, in the bloody aftermath you can say to each of the losers, "Hey, you could have had it if you'd fought harder!" and that's true on an individual level. But not collectively -- you knew goddamned well that nine hobos weren't getting any hooch that night. So why are you acting like it's their fault that only one of them is drunk?" . . .

You know how they got there, by spending the last 12 years in school getting their asses kicked to become doctors I'm sure Med School is way harder than, say, being a sniper in the armed forces that has to be motionless for days in extreme weather conditions in a hostile environment. That's why docs get paid way more than snipers...........

There are alot of professionals out there that make that, of which wall street investment bankers make up a small portion. (I am guessing that is what you are referring to)

The 1% are multimillionares.many of which are wallstreet investers. I find it hard to believe that 2 doctors (your sister and brother inlaw) are part of that club.... just saying This speaks to the issue I have with the argument that the "rich" need to shoulder a greater share of the tax burden, which is not with the concept itself, but rather with the commonly-proposed policy implementations. While $200K-$300K is certainly a lot more money than I earn, I don't consider that level of income to be a definition of "rich." No matter what I think, statistics will show that people in this income range are nowhere near the hallowed "1%." I think it's fair to say that most people can, if sufficiently inclined, attain that level of "wealth" through some amount of extra effort and some (usually large) amount of career investment. All that takes is being highly motivated to do whatever it takes to earn more money. People who earn in that range pay the highest percentage of their income in taxes, relative to all other groups of taxpayers, and asking them to bleed more is barking up the wrong tree in my opinion. I define "rich" as the types big moby referred to in his post. These are people that are hard-pressed to spend money faster than they earn it. These people have enough money to buy laws that allow them to retain and grow that wealth, which more or less makes them immune to any discussion of tax increases. Because our lawmakers rely on this contingent for large percentages of their campaign budgets, they are not likely to change that dynamic. If an honest look were ever taken at how much tax revenue these folks should be accounting for, I think the budget deficit would seem a lot less daunting. However.... For reasons others have highlighted (and that the article highlights), I agree that NOBODY, no matter how "rich," should claim that it's possible for all members of society to obtain meaningful wealth through dedication and hard work. A society takes all kinds, and it cannot support an entire population of fat cats. People get paid what the market will bear, and I'm mostly alright with that. White collar people with the attitude that they work harder than everyone else and thus deserve more should be shot. Despite their massive collections of possessions, they do nothing more for the benefit of society than the lowly ditch digger. In many cases, I think it's safe to say that more people benefit (in real ways) from the work of hard laborers than from high wage earners.

And I am sure Army recruiter told the sniper he was going to make 100K as well. Were you making a point?

Not everyone has the expectation that they are going to get rich, I knew when I got into my chosen career field that making a million dollars a year is not a possibility.
That same decision is made by many when choosing their career path.
