I never ever go to garage sales to buy stuff for resale and it jerks my chain that many do exactly that.
I know already that the noisiest defenders will also be the participants in such activity, so we'll see what pops up.
I only buy stuff that I figure I have a present or future use for and it flat out annoys me that some would rather use every opportunity to scrounge another buck anyway they can, even if it removes an opportunity for someone who can use something, but hasn't much money.
When I give my stuff away to my kids or friends, there is always the stipulation that they may give it away or trade it away, but they will NOT sell it.

Am I the only one who thinks that way?

I only buy what I want to keep, but what difference does it make if someone resells your item if they paid your asking price?

I usually just appreciate just getting rid of the junk and any money earned in lieu of paying disposal fees at the dump is money ahead.

People that do that are called 'pickers'. I was one for about 2 years, off and on, up in Whatcom County when I was working construction in the mid/late m'70's, had a wife, new born son and a house payment. The economy was down and work was sporadic. So, I did what I could to feed my family and keep a roof over their head.
I still do it now if I see a good deal and if and when I have a garage sale, I keep my prices down to encourage people to do the same thing. It's cash income that doesn't show up on the balance sheet so the feds can take a cut. To me, it's a win/win.

AM, I think he's specifically arguing about people who buy stuff for the SOLE purpose of re-selling it at a higher price. There's a word for this -- Arbitrage.

There's a word for what Slab Happy wants. It's called Socialism.

Once he starts down this path, he'll be coming after your guns.

Once he gets the guns, he'll start demanding free government cheese.

Once he gets the free government cheese he'll build enormous mouse-traps outside his house to keep the "Rodents of unusual size" away.

It's a downward spiral.

Slab,

I thought you are a free market conservative, correct? If so, why do you care how or why other people buy and sell garage sale stuff? Or are you one of those RWWJs who feel the need to control other people's behavior?

Posting this thread suggests that you hold some mutually exclusive values. You might want to evaluate that. Irish Rogue has you pegged.

Sg

PS: my opinion is that I don't care why other people attend garage sales. When I have a garage or yard sale, my purpose is to get rid of stuff. Any money I make is compensation for dealing with the hassle of holding the sale.

I don't frequent garage sales, but I do buy a lot of stuff that I intend to sell and not use. 100% of it is flyfishing related items. I look for good deals on things, then sell them for a profit.
I use that cash to buy more and sell it. I do this because I generally have an item in mind that I want. Once I've finally have enough save up, I buy what I want and put it to use in my fishing.
It's kind of like a hobby for me.

I don't really see anything wrong with folks selling stuff they buy at a garage sale. They paid for it, so they can do as they please with it.

I don't visit garage sales as I don't need other peoples junk. However, if you have that mindset then why did you charge for it at a garage sale? Why not give it away?

I was a picker in the seventies. During "turn out the lights" I picked apples, pears, cherries, apricots, cukes, taters, etc. Whatever it took to get by.

For clarification purposes......I don't have garage sales.....I donate it or give it away.....this past year I have given away a 2 boats w/trailers, a desktop computer set, an outboard motor that I had just put a water pump in last year (the old guy loves it), traded a sidearm for a rifle and smaller calibar pistol.....blah blah blah
So it appears that many think that is foolish......I like to think of it as paying it forward.

I appreciate all of your inputs, regardless whether we share a common belief.

Not a big garage sale person, but I will add....

I don't care what they do with the stuff....just glad it's gone.

Set a start time and stick with it.
Charge an early admission fee if they try to crash the party earlier than the advertised opening.

Don't waste time pondering the perfect tagged price for something.
Pad it some because they're going to try to work you down anyway.

Get ready for some haggling when you have someone cherry-picking and making a big pile of their chosen stuff.

The biggest pain are the early show ups and the hardcore hagglers.
They take the fun out of it.

We participate in the McCleary garage sale, usually every other year. I don't care what they buy it for, as long as I think the price is fair for me. I used it, and now I'm done with it, which is why it is in the garage sale.

I don't care what other guys do with my old girlfriends. (pics or video would be nice) Why would I care what they do with my old belongings, as long as the buyer and seller met at an agreed price.

If you give something away to someone and they sell it, it should not affect you.

It turns out you gave them money, and not the thing you thought you were giving them. Either way, you don't have it any more and it isn't yours to decide it's future. If the person who owns the thing would like money in lieu of the thing you give them, tell them to wait for you to sell it and then you will give them the money.

Then of course once you had the money you might re-consider that position.

Garage sales suck, and we have one almost every year. Don't get excited, it is almost 100% little girls clothes.

Mostly I could care less...but I do take it a bit wrong if someone takes a gift and sells it or trades it...if they didn't want it, they should have let me gift it to someone who does.

If you can "buy low, sell high", then more power to you...it is, after all, the American Way...only a Nigerian Kenyan Socialist Islamo-Fascist would be against that.

"Toddler" rolleyes

FYI

Stuff I give away with the stipulation aforementioned applies only to my family. It is my intent to instill the importance of NOT placing money above helping others.
One of the boat/trailer/motor combinations I "gave" away to a young couple has a stipulation that if they sell it, they owe me $500 which is what I have into the transom rebuild. Technically, they aren't required to pay. There is no paperwork. They will choose whether their choice(s) are OK with themselves. The old man I gave the outboard to I've never met. I heard about his situation from his daughter who told me that he is crippled from childhood polio, likes to fish and take his grandkids fishing, and his motor fails him regularly.......now he calls her to say how much fun he's having.....how much is that worth?

I sell stuff like anyone else, I just don't use garage sales to do it. Nor do I hold anything against those who do so occasionally. Shopping at garage sales for the sole purpose making a profit doesn't garner my respect, is all. Nothing illegal about it. Personal choice. I think if I did have a garage sale, everytime someone wanted me to lower the price, I'd raise it, and keep doing so until they left. Now that would tickle me. smile

I clean up foreclosed properties for fun (and money). People hold onto the wierdest crap. Mostly broken crap. Obsolete crap with obsolete missing parts. Give it away, sell it, or throw it away if you are done with it. Really. Unless it is a VHS tape titled, "My first time, volume 8." I have volume 7, found it in a foreclosure.

You must read all day, certainly more than I and I noticed, after others teased you, that there is some truth there... you cut and paste often and always seem to be informative and it is almost always relevant. That is a tough combination that I admire.

I've figured out the some people see potential in many things that others regard as waste. As a result their place usually is a mess. I'm not sure at what point it becomes a real problem, but I know it certainly can turn into a trap of its own.
People who have no mechanical aptitude or are well off financially typically have neat places.....in the first instance, it's because they can't put two parts together, and in the second case, they don't need to.

Druggers and Drunks are not part of this scenario. They are like tornados....going through life tearing the crap out of everything they touch and leaving others to pick up the mess.

I do not think along your lines.
Once it is gone..it is gone. If someone has an eye for piece it would be his/hers once the cash changed hands. Would you think this if you sold your house and they turned around and sold it for a profit six months later.

Kinda backward thinkin.
