I never ever go to garage sales to buy stuff for resale and it jerks my chain that many do exactly that.
I know already that the noisiest defenders will also be the participants in such activity, so we'll see what pops up.
I only buy stuff that I figure I have a present or future use for and it flat out annoys me that some would rather use every opportunity to scrounge another buck anyway they can, even if it removes an opportunity for someone who can use something, but hasn't much money.
When I give my stuff away to my kids or friends, there is always the stipulation that they may give it away or trade it away, but they will NOT sell it.

Am I the only one who thinks that way?

I only buy what I want to keep, but what difference does it make if someone resells your item if they paid your asking price?

I usually just appreciate just getting rid of the junk and any money earned in lieu of paying disposal fees at the dump is money ahead.

People that do that are called 'pickers'. I was one for about 2 years, off and on, up in Whatcom County when I was working construction in the mid/late m'70's, had a wife, new born son and a house payment. The economy was down and work was sporadic. So, I did what I could to feed my family and keep a roof over their head.
I still do it now if I see a good deal and if and when I have a garage sale, I keep my prices down to encourage people to do the same thing. It's cash income that doesn't show up on the balance sheet so the feds can take a cut. To me, it's a win/win.

AM, I think he's specifically arguing about people who buy stuff for the SOLE purpose of re-selling it at a higher price. There's a word for this -- Arbitrage.

There's a word for what Slab Happy wants. It's called Socialism.

Once he starts down this path, he'll be coming after your guns.

Once he gets the guns, he'll start demanding free government cheese.

Once he gets the free government cheese he'll build enormous mouse-traps outside his house to keep the "Rodents of unusual size" away.

It's a downward spiral.

Slab,

I thought you are a free market conservative, correct? If so, why do you care how or why other people buy and sell garage sale stuff? Or are you one of those RWWJs who feel the need to control other people's behavior?

Posting this thread suggests that you hold some mutually exclusive values. You might want to evaluate that. Irish Rogue has you pegged.

Sg

PS: my opinion is that I don't care why other people attend garage sales. When I have a garage or yard sale, my purpose is to get rid of stuff. Any money I make is compensation for dealing with the hassle of holding the sale.

I don't frequent garage sales, but I do buy a lot of stuff that I intend to sell and not use. 100% of it is flyfishing related items. I look for good deals on things, then sell them for a profit.
I use that cash to buy more and sell it. I do this because I generally have an item in mind that I want. Once I've finally have enough save up, I buy what I want and put it to use in my fishing.
It's kind of like a hobby for me.

I don't really see anything wrong with folks selling stuff they buy at a garage sale. They paid for it, so they can do as they please with it.

I don't visit garage sales as I don't need other peoples junk. However, if you have that mindset then why did you charge for it at a garage sale? Why not give it away?

I was a picker in the seventies. During "turn out the lights" I picked apples, pears, cherries, apricots, cukes, taters, etc. Whatever it took to get by.

LOL...

Irish Rogue and Salmo G hit this one on the head. It is really just ANTOTHER example of Slabby's inability to connect dots and see a bigger picture.

For clarification purposes......I don't have garage sales.....I donate it or give it away.....this past year I have given away a 2 boats w/trailers, a desktop computer set, an outboard motor that I had just put a water pump in last year (the old guy loves it), traded a sidearm for a rifle and smaller calibar pistol.....blah blah blah
So it appears that many think that is foolish......I like to think of it as paying it forward.

I appreciate all of your inputs, regardless whether we share a common belief.

Not a big garage sale person, but I will add....

I don't care what they do with the stuff....just glad it's gone.

Set a start time and stick with it.
Charge an early admission fee if they try to crash the party earlier than the advertised opening.

Don't waste time pondering the perfect tagged price for something.
Pad it some because they're going to try to work you down anyway.

Get ready for some haggling when you have someone cherry-picking and making a big pile of their chosen stuff.

The biggest pain are the early show ups and the hardcore hagglers.
They take the fun out of it.

We participate in the McCleary garage sale, usually every other year. I don't care what they buy it for, as long as I think the price is fair for me. I used it, and now I'm done with it, which is why it is in the garage sale.

I don't care what other guys do with my old girlfriends. (pics or video would be nice) Why would I care what they do with my old belongings, as long as the buyer and seller met at an agreed price.

Not sure I'd want to touch anything at a "McCleary garage sale".

Doors from the Simpson Mastermark door plant. Mostly seconds or cancelled orders, but fine doors, nonetheless.

If you give something away to someone and they sell it, it should not affect you.

It turns out you gave them money, and not the thing you thought you were giving them. Either way, you don't have it any more and it isn't yours to decide it's future. If the person who owns the thing would like money in lieu of the thing you give them, tell them to wait for you to sell it and then you will give them the money.

Then of course once you had the money you might re-consider that position.

Garage sales suck, and we have one almost every year. Don't get excited, it is almost 100% little girls clothes.
