I'm in the process of updating the interior of my house. In other words removing the s"kid marks" left in the walls and doors over the last 10 years. I've been painting walls and ceilings with a roller and brushes and its been going well. time consuming but worth it. I
Dogfish you put up a post awhile back about painting the doors. What kind of sprayer, paint, etc.??? should I look for that will do a decent job without spending a fortune?
any suggestions on what works, doesnt work for doors and trim and such?
Sorry for this being a bit of an openend ended question... just looking for a place to start.

I have a lot of experience painting. enamel would be what I would use, preferably fast drying to avoid runs. Paint co. are somewhat regional so I do not know what is avaliable for you. when I was doing it commercially I used Rodda non yellowing enamel, oil based.
If you want to get hard core take them off the hinges and get outside or in garage. take lath strips and tack them together in a zig-zag manner standing up.
I used a Titan 440i with appropriate tip. you might be able to do it with one of those wagner setups.......
good luck

What kind of doors? Wooden stained, wooden painted or steel?
Steel will require an oil base. Wooden painted can be regular latex (satin or semi-gloss) and stained will require a ton of prep work.
Not sure of your budget, but most interior doors (wooden paneling / hollow) can be bought for rather cheap ($100 each or less). Some places will even re-hang your old hardware for free if you bring it in.
Good luck,

1st off, to get a good finish, you have to spray doors. A roller or brush will leave undesirable brush or roller marks.
If they are standard run of the mill hollow core or solid interior doors, you can use a latex based satin, semi gloss or gloss paint so they have a higher degree of durability. I prefer Semi gloss.
When I remodeled my place, I created a makeshift hanger consisting of a 2x4's hung off my deck, used eye hooks to hang all the doors and gave them 2 light coats with an airless sprayer. Worked great on all the hollow core and louvered doors.

Here is that thread from a few years ago. http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/forum...html#Post520206 I used a Graco sprayer (Magnum X5), with a standard latex paint tip, and I used a satin finish latex paint (Parker, I believe). Use satin or semi-gloss on doors, much easier to clean. Use on a low pressure setting. Many light coats are much better than two heavy ones. Seal the tops and bottoms of the doors first. Mine is going in for service, but you should probably rent one, not buy one, unless you plan on doing a lot of painting over the next 5 or so years. My spray room was entirely encased in painter's plastic (now my office), and I use that 12' wide plastic you get at Home Depot. They sell drywall shims (36" long by 2" wide cardboard strips) there as well, and those are a handy way to attach the plastic to the walls (with staples), as tape may prematurely detach when there is an abundance of moisture in the room from the paint. Get some 1x2 firring strips. Two go under the doors, two go across the tops, and get some help to set your doors up like this. \...../.....\...../....\ (see picture above) Make sure you have sufficent room to get in between and spray the doors. You can use the same set-up to paint your trim.

I did same as DF when I did my doors. I still cough up a white furball everynow and then.
My house has about 15 miles of white trim in it, I never want to paint again! Ever.

Awesome guys! this is exactly what I'm looking for!!! Rocket, I hear you on the trim... not looking forward to doing that stuff - 2600 sqft with 4 bedrooms of base, door and lots window trim. I'll try and take some before and afters...
I have wood panel doors previously painted, so I'll be sanding and re-spraying... Doors are in good shape I just need to color match to the new colors in the house.
Question on the metal exterior doors I have? lots of kid dents in them. is it possible to repair dents with body filler or, is it better to replace them... I'm thinking of going wood as it seems easier to fix the inevitable dents...

Me, I'd buy a new pre-hung door and avoid another project. Sounds like you have a few ahead of you.

after reading your original post Dogfish - gonna look at salmo's Fiberglass doors... But, not till I get the rest of it done though...
My entire interior of the house was painted white before and i've hated it - I'm loving the new shots of color!

thought I'd throw up the design I have for my bedroom... ignore the colors of the render... walls are a slate blue/grey, trim and cabinets are white. I really need to do a before and after...

Piper-
I have bodyshop in Gig Harbor (and Puyallup) and repairing and painting metal doors is not a difficult job. Take some pictures and I will PM my email if that sounds helpful.

I am not a painter but give a try. I hate drips, runs and sags in the finish. I have sprayed the doors vertically but sags are a problem for me, when that happens, I have to start over by sanding it smooth and respray. Now I paint the doors flat by setting up a temp "rotisserie" so you can rotate the door. The latest doors were solid and very heavy, this really helped. The setup is easy with some long pins or screws and a couple of sawhorses.
