I dunno Dave, I think the best beer in the world is the one that convinces her to sleep with you...or In KK's case...It.

Too expensive. I have been drinking red beers lately. I won't be stoked if it ain't red.

Well I can tell from all the Busch can piles I find up in the mountains surrounded by spent shells and garbage that I think Busch drinkers lean right.

Some of the commets under the best beer article are funny but I think this one is the best:
"At $85 a six pack, I better be able to drink any girl beautiful."

And here's another:
"strip club pricing without the bearded clams"

Well, put me up in the upper left corner, the "leans Democrat" and "high voter turnout" square, and let's see what we get.

Sierra Nevada? Yes, any flavor. Always been one of my favorites.

The generic "any microbrew"? Well, yeah...accounts for most every beer I drink when not out fishing. We live in the PNW, no excuse to not have a few microbrews on your list.

Molson? No...unless it's in Canada. Same goes for Labatt's. The American versions suck, the Canadian versions rock.

MGD? AYFKM? That schit tastes like...schit. Same with Becks, Michelob, and Michelob Light. Especially the Becks.

Stella? It's the only skunky Belgian beer I like, and I'll have it occasionally when it's on tap, and since they got picked up by Miller Distributing, it's everywhere now.

Hard Cider? What is this? Sesame Street? No, with a capital "N-O".

So I guess so far as I go they're about 50/50 accurate.

The rest of the beers?

I drink Busch when I fish, sometimes. Just as likely to be Rainier, which isn't even on the list.

No one around here even knows what Leinenkugel is...but whenever I am in the midwest I can be found having a pint or two of it where it is on tap.

Anything with "Budweiser" or "Coors" in the name is an embarrassment to mankind, and ought not even be called "beer" at all. Pisswater, at best. You have to really hate both yourself and beer to drink that garbage, no matter what your political beliefs are.

Heineken is the perfect example of YuppyShitBeer. Almost as bad as Budweiser or Coors, only it costs twice as much to drink that garbage. People who drink Heineken think they are saying "look how smart and internationally-minded I am", but what they're really saying is "look how much money I can waste on beer that tastes like donkey piss". The ultimate poser beer.

Corona? Go to Mexico, and buy Corona...then you'll be just like someone who drinks Budweiser around here. Similar to Heineken, you may as well drink Budweiser because they both taste like schit and at least Budweiser won't cost you $8 a sixer.

Foster's? OK, I guess. The cans don't fit in the cupholders in my rig. wink

Sam Adams and Henry's used to be okay, back when they had one or two flavors each and worked hard on them...now they've got a dozen flavors each, and almost all of them suck. Sam Adams is a bit better than Henry's, and that's only because the original Boston Lager is still pretty good.

Drinking any Miller beer...of any type...is another good way to show the world just how much you hate both yourself and beer. Seriously, this crap makes Coors beers taste good.

Keystone doesn't even qualify as beer, so doesn't belong on the list at all. Same with anything that has "ice" in the name.

I haven't had a LoneStar Beer in years...used to have it on tap at Buck's in Bellingham (which later became the BBB, and is now some stupid poser bar where the patrons likely drink Becks or Heineken). There was a time when it was happy hour priced at a quarter for a glass, and a buck for a pitcher. Happy Hour ran from 11am until 8pm, seven days a week. We drank a lot of LoneStar beer in college wink

The lack of PBR and Rainier on the list shows that whoever made the list has never worked a day in their lives.

I'll hit the Rolling Rock every once in a while, just for a change...the tall boys have made appearances in the boat on occasion.

Fish on...

Todd

I have been to Australia twice and can tell you no self respecting Aussie would be caught dead drinking Fosters. They all think it's sheep piss made to export to places where beer drinkers have no taste buds. The Aussies do love their beer and have some very fine ones. XXXX Gold was my favorite but Victoria Bitter was excellent as well.

We've seen Todd's paid-for beer list.
Would like to see Todd's free beer list.

Edit:
Back in the day American beer was a joke.
Industrial-brewed crap.
Lookin' like we own the good schitt now. Nice turnaround.
Workin' an Inversion IPA right now. Can't think of a foreign beer that could match it.

Over the summer Widmer's Rotator (Shaddock) IPA was a favorite.
Now Rotator is Falconer's IPA which was a disappointment for me (in bottles) coming from Shaddock.
But alas, Falconer's on tap seems to be a different animal.
2 pints and I'm happily headed for the barn.

Georgetown Brewery...not bottled, but found all over the place around here over the last year.

They have a Pale Ale (Manny's) that's pretty good...but Lucille, their IPA, is even better.

I love watching guys who think they're all sophisticated and sh!t in a sushi bar while they sip on Kirin ...... I used to live in a Yakuza/blue collar neighborhood in Tokyo, and everyone in that part of the city drank Asahi as their daily brew and this stuff when they ate sushi. I learned from the best. Uwajimaya stopped carrying it about 10 years ago. Sad day.

The best beer is any beer between 7:30 to 9:00 in the morning after landing your first fish. Means the day started off "just right".

The second best beer is always something local to your area. Around kitsap I like the ridgetop red. Or maybe something seasonal from them. Always keep ridgetop on tap at the house though. If you have not tried it stop by silvercity.....good sh-t.

Cool guys and good atmosphere. Never sat down and drank but dropped off the kegs every couple of months since we got taps put in. The 1/8 barrels dont last as long as you would think.

Always a big plus. If you see an gray haired, pony tailed codger squinting at the beer list, it might be me. Sadly, I live close to Brownsville so a taxi is needed if I have too much fun there.

At 5' wide you have a better chance of landing in a planter.

todd was right about the difference between canada import beers from the same beer that stays in canada. huge difference. the kokanee is a very good example.

generally the safest rule to follow is beers done locally in any area will be the best. fresh brittish beer that you find in the pubs of brittain come from the local breweries. take that same brew and bring it here... well it's not the same. beers age like milk. imagine how a gallon of darigold would taste being frieghter shiped to brittain... not well great.

Why all the hate on Belgian beers? A good Abbey style ale is always a favorite with me. Of course, you don't find many of those round here. If you get the notion, try New Belgium's Abbey or Trippel. Yes, they're American, but both great examples of the style.

I also love German bier, but I think the good ol' USA has the best variety (and most adventurous flavors) of any place I've ever been. Some American microbrewery makes a world class example of most every style of beer.

I was raised on Rainier but hate it now. Then I tried the old Schlitz and then Henry's during my time at Wazzu. Thursday night buck pitcher night at Rathskellars in Moscow.

Then I tried the Kemper beers. Dad got grain from them then we would go Pike Place at their old location on Western, they would give us beer for picking up grain. Love their amber ale. Now the grain comes from Silver City and they produce lots of grain recently. Like the Ridgetop Red. I'm not a big fan of the IPAs as they are a little strong and hoppy. Guiness and most of the porters are good in my opinion. Not much of a Belgian beer fan even though dad is Belgian. I like Mexican beers like Pacifico or Dos Equis.

Fishing beer is Bud Light but used to be the cheap Natural Light or Milwaukee's Best. Dad in Law used to drink Miller High Life but switched to BL. Game warden called him Mr. Miller and wrote him a bogus littering ticket but a few years ago he told him he was one of the best if not the best fisherman on the river. Always have BL on ice in the back of our trucks when fishing for summeruns. Also hide a cooler in the brush and shade nearby where I fish and restock. Good place to keep bait, something to eat, and even keep a fish cool. Dennis saw me coming out of the brush with a cold one and was amazed but he doesn't drink at least on the river. Last summer Chet turned me on to the BL Chelada.

I like the Elyssian Men's Room, Mac and Jack, and Manny's. Sound Brewing makes a great O'Reagan's Red and the Belgian Dubble is tasty but too filling.

since MGD owns SAB.... they own the rights to milwaukie, raineer, pbr and olympia rights. well trust me on this one. ALL these labels come fom the same tank or recipe. any who says they can tell the difference is an idiot. pay close attention to the grocery store prices on these brands. they always shadow each other.

This thread is making me thirsty.

Todd- We got Leinenkugel(sp?) at Fred Meyers last summer. Not sure if they have it now, but they are pretty good.

We have a lot of beer snobs around here. Which is cool, I pretty much don't like Miller stuff, but if Brewer is correct I guess I do because I enjoy PBR and Rainier, especially when fishing.

Last weekend I got a clam digging themed present at at White Elephant gift exchange. Part of it was a 4-pack of Budlight/clam/tomato juice "Cheladas". I have 3.85 of to give away if any of you like them.

how i know this about the MGD brands that were at one time brewed in the PNW. after MGD purchased the rights to Henry W. Raineer and Olympia breweries. they began shuting the HenryW's brewery and of course the Raineer brewery down. MGD only kept Olympia brewery in operation. keep in mind that not a drop of Miller beer brands was ever brewed there. it became a contract brewery only. meaning it would produce other beer brands from other breweries. like all the St.Des and the other high gravity swill brands you see. they also did stuff like the alcho-pops that was popular 10 years back.

It remained a Union brewery though. so many workers from Henry's brewery needed to transfer up to Olympia to finish thier Union time. after several of them could finally leave with thier Union pensions intact, they found thier way to BridgePort brewery. they all share stories of working on the "econoline". meaning one tank would produce ALL the brands. meaning only the "brands" of cans or bottle lables would change throughout the day. i was actually shown a production sheet of this, so it's very true.

not sure where the brands come from now, maybe cali. now the the Olympia brewery has been shut down.

breweries all over the world are like properties on a monopoly board. even BridgePort brewery is owned by a company called Gambrinus Corp. based out of san antonio texas. they own the Shiner Bock brewery and several others. they also own the Trumer Pilsner brewery in frisco. so breweries are a wealthy man's toys of sorts.

i was going to school at SPSCC right after the brewery shut down. lots of displaced workers in there with funny stories from work. that's where i learned that keystone light and coors light were the same thing. supposedly "sparks" was the nastiest thing to clean up after, as the vats would be filled with green slime afterward.

as for me, i can handle IPAs but would never call it my favorite beer style. give me an imperial stout any day!

Stopped by Elliott Bay Pizza in Mill Creek for a take out and saw they had a bar now with about 20 very interesting microbrews on tap. Settled on a brew from North Sound Brewing called Creepy Monkey, 16%. Pretty good and didn't have a huge alcohol taste as I expected.

Can't fathom why anyone would buy light beer. They just add 1/3 water to regular beer, and it's "light." Jeebuz.

Thankfully microbrew saved the beer scene. Now I know God loves me.

Being partial to the heavily hopped varieties, Deschutes Hop Trip still holds
#1 in my book, followed very closely by the Glacier Brew House's IPA.

Todd, spectacular summary, but in your mention of incredibly bad beers from the midwest, how could you omit Old Style? Hands down the worst attempt at beer I have ever encountered. To the credit of the midwest, Summit in MSP makes a pretty robust pale that is very similar to Sierra Nevada's but without a few of the flaws.

A few years ago, I was hunting elk down near Morton. It was unseasonably warm, and my partner and I had just come down off a big hill and were parched.

We drove by Glenoma, and stoped by the little convenience mart. We gathered up enough change to buy a couple Keystones. I took a swig, and it was soooo bad, I didn't want to drink it. I took a small sip to wet the whistle, and dumped the rest out. I would have chugged a PBR, Oly, or any number of other questionable brews.

Keystone is not beer, no matter what the label says.

There is a new bar in Woodinville I'd suggest you all try, it's called the Collective and has over 20 of the northwests finest crafts beers on tap. I had the Triplehorn Brewery's Nemesis Milk Stout the other night and it was the best tasting beer I have ever drank.I also hade some Blakely Brown from Bainbridge Brewery that was outstanding.

Seems like we've crushed the foreigners on beer and ale.
American spirits aren't too shabby either.
We make good bread now, too.

Diamond Knot = yummy.

Went to The Collective last night with SkyGuy on my way home from fishing, and had a few beers...but the standout was the WhoopAss Double IPA from...Silver something brewery?...out of Bremerton.

Double awesome, it was.

Fish on...

Todd - that's Silver City Brewery. That have two spots - a pub/resturant in Silverdale and a pub in Bremerton where they brew the beer. They did brew in Silverdale but as it has become more popular they moved the brewing to Bremerton by the car dealers and expanded the resturant. I've been going there since they opened and have never had a bad brew or food. I like the Bremerton pub better now since it's more casual pub than the Silverdale spot.

Silver City sends out an email every week about their specials etc. plus a beer fact. Here's the latest:

Beer Trivia Fact of the Week:
Q: "Who was the first American to brew lager beer?"
A: The first US lager was brewed in 1840 by John Wagner, who had a small brewery in the back of his house on St. John Street in Philadelphia. Wagner brought the first lager yeast to the United States from a brewery in Bavaria.

Ah, so that's how you used to win your fishing money in boxing challenge matches in Lewiston taverns while at wazzoo; you were the only sober boxer. And to think I thought you were just making sh!t up.

You are getting old and your memory is failing SG . I went to school in Pullman I drank more than my fair share like most cougs. I grew out of it when I graduated mostly. The fights were in Moscow held at rathskellers once a month. I didn't think you were a yuppie I thought you were more of a granola. Did you go yuppie And put granite counters in your kitchen in the new house?

Joad, just as a blind squirrel finds an occasional nut, you're occasionally right. I am getting older, not that there's much alternative, and my hard drive isn't as large as it needs to be in this information age. But since you drank more than your fair share, and most Coogs drank more than their fair share, how then does one calculate exactly how much is a "fair share?" Which leads one to believe that you won by conveniently standing in the corner and being the last student to fall down. And no in regards to granite counters in the new kitchen. Granite counters went in the powder room and master bath, not that that has anything to do with the beer thread. Yeah, granola all the way, along with Birkenstocks and Lezbaru. Never could afford Yuppie, NTTAWWT.
