Just a report. Talked to our local fish biologist yesterday, and he told me he has spent the last several weeks on the Grand Ronde. Lots of fish, and crowds. A week ago he checked 40 some anglers with over 70 fish caught. Said the flows are fluctuating with recent rains and snowmelt, but when the river is in shape, lots of fish to be caught.

Mike,
Did the biologist have any info on where the biggest concetration of fish were. I was wondering how far up the fish were? Id like to try as far up as the mouth of the Minam. Any info would be apreciated.

The steelhead at this time of year on the Rhonde are returning to the hatchery at Cottonwood. This hatchery is located about 2 miles up the road from Bogan's. Lots of people, but find some overlooked pockets and the fishing can be phenomenal. This is the first year since 89 I haven't fished the Ronde at least a couple times(used to be an eastsider) Fun place to camp and fish and all you can eat at Bogan's, Friday and Saturday nights for about 6 bucks. Though, like every place the crowds have grown year after year. Though you don't find much attitude.---mike

Cottonwood creek area is where I was referring to. But, a friend of mine got two on the Wallowa a couple of weeks ago, so if there are fish clear up there, they will be at the mouth of the Minam. Troy area can be good also, but other than this one report from the Wallowa, havn't heard anything from these other areas. In a normal year, fish should be spread out through these entire systems by now. Another friend is fishing the Cottonwood Boggans area yesterday and today. When he returns, I'll post another report.
