a friend and i caught a buck on the hoh that went 37" x 19".
he grew up in port angeles and has caught a lot of steelhead. he would eye them on the river for weight, then weigh them at home. he said that over the years he became very accurate. his scale has been checked and it is accurate.
he eyed the buck at 19lbs, the math says 17.2
he is sticking to his guns.
has anyone measured and weighed fish consistantly over the years? is the formula accurate?

Don't know if this will help or is what your looking for, but the general rule that I have used is a 30" fish is 10 lb. Anything over that is about a pound per inch. So by this method a 37" fish is about 17 pounds. As you can tell this is not very scientific but it is usually accurite to within a half pound. If the fish is really chunky then add a little weight or if it very skinny take some away. This was shown to me by a guide, and I have tested it to some degree on hatchery fish and found it to be fairly accurate. Hope this helps.

19 may be on a touch of the high side unless the fish is a hen or a really chunky fish. 36 inch hens tend to be in the 16-17lb range.
Besides fishermen are allowed to round up..

Tims formula seems pretty good for a quick and dirty weight

I caught a fat hen on the upper bogey 2 weeks ago that was 36". I was guessing 16-17 lbs, guess I was pretty close. The 30" 10lb.
rule works in a pinch when ya haven't got a measuring device.
