Good day one and all!

I'm a Great Lakes angler who has been salmon fishing for a number of years (although on none of your glorious waters).

I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a web site/provide info on using cut herring (and how to rig them) and herring strips. I tried an using an alewife once on Lake Ontario and seemed to work quite well.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

The current Salmon Trout and Steelheader has an article that shows step by step how to rig a cut plug bait, as well as several other rigs. It has very descriptive pictures, and if you've never done it before it would be very helpful. Actually you have inspired my to do my first tip on my webpage. Please excuse the crude graphics, but I think it will get the job done. It's the only tip, so far at www.xprt.net/~ryandsar hope it helps.

Thanks for the reply Ryan! I was out fishing all weekend (Opening weekend for Trout in Ontario) and just got your message. I checked out your website and downloaded the slides; any info or tips on fishing the cut plug? Once again many thanks! J.P.

Salmonizer
We commonly fish cut plug herring for salmon in the northwest. The most effective way to fish them is a method we call motor mooching. It is basically trolling a herring and a sliding weight with a controlled presentation. We use the motor to control the boat in the tide currents, since you don't have tide currents you will need to use the motor to make the herring spin. There are as many variations for rigging the herring onto the hook as there are fishermen around these parts. (whole, spinners, cutplugs)
The most important part of the setup is good bait(fresh or quality frozen), bait that spins and sharp hooks. I have a tiny bit of information of the mooching technique on my site. http://www.steelheader.net/Salmon/mooching.htm

Hope this gets you started in the right direction. We have also used this technique to catch trophy sized trout from lakes.

Tight lines
