I didn't slow down soon enough going into a speed trap last Saturday night and got a speeding ticket. My insurance company is brutal on these and makes the cost of the ticket just a small down payment relative to the rate increase that lasts for 2 or 3 years.

I've read about this deferral thing before, and the cop mentioned that I might qualify for it. I guess it's a condition where you pay the fine, but it doesn't go on your record for the insurance company. Anybody know how this works? There is nothing on the ticket mentioning it. Do I call the county courthouse where the infraction occurred and ask them?

Any assistance appreciated.

You can typically defer a ticket once every 7 years. It's done through the county you got the ticket in.

You pay the ticket, a deferral fee, and if you go the next year without a ticket, it will stay off your record. If you get another ticket during that year, you get to pay both, and get two-holed by your insurer.

google "ticket deferral XXXX county Washington" and you should be able to find a link explaining the process.

If that is your only ticket than it is time for a new insurance company...

I got a deferral & the cost of the processing was more than the ticket would have been. Rather than pay the deferral processing I did public service for a credit of so much per hour. Did the public service @ Brownsville Marina. The marina manager said I did a good job on the heads.

For the same exact amount you can get an attorney, beat the charge and have it removed from your record. The court costs of defending against your attorney is more than the city, county or court would make off the ticket itself. You pay the fee, it is off your record and the city gets nothing for bothering you. If all defendants hired attorneys, they would bother ticketing you. They don't want you to know that and it is all about the money... You're going to pay it to someone.

Call a couple attornies that specialize in these types of infractions and see what they say. I paid $100 for the last photo infraction in Fife and it was dismissed before the court date.

I had a ticket deferral a few years back. Went to Thurston County court clerk office or something, asked for deferral. I paid $150 and did not get another ticket for 3 years, I think, and it did not go on my record. As far as I know, you do not pay the ticket, you pay $150 flat rate. If you get another during the period, you get to pay both and they both go on your record. Have you talked to CanyonMan for an insurance quote?

The City Ordinance states you have to stop for a free right turn for exactly 1/20th of a second to qualify as a "complete" stop on a free right turn. Magically, after hiring an attorney, the video evidence became "inconclusive."

Back to the original post. Sorry to hear Sg. About a year ago the wife went on base for the first time and wasn't sure where she was going. She was pulled over for going 25 in a 20, which also coincidentally was a school zone. MP's pulled her over and issued her a ticket. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

To make it worse, the MP"s issuing the ticket told her that it would not go on her record since it occurred on base. Sure enough, 6 month insurance policy came in about a month ago and the rates were jacked through the roof. Not only did the insurance ding for the speeding, but the school zone as well. Factored out being about another $80 per month. I guess MP's are just as clueless as your average cop, or don't give a chit about people and will lie to them. Had we known that it would go on her record, we definitely would have fought it at that point.

Did he pull strings to get rid of your seat belt ticket?

When you send in your ticket, ask for discovery. Sometimes they screw up the ticket or have other fatal flaws. I got a real stupid one a while back and got in quite a discussion with the officer. He got kind of mad and took off at high speed. Sure enough, when I got the ticket, he had no notes. No notes = no evidence for the judge. Dismissed. Another time I got nailed in a real bad speed trap, ( school zone when the sign and school were not visible). The radar gun was not calibrated according to the recommended schedule. All the information was right there in the ticket. When I pointed it out in court, magically my ticket and about 90% of all the tickets for the next hour were dismissed. About $10,000 or more in revenue walked out the door as they were all school zone infractions in the same area. It was so fun I was tempted to camp out there and see how much money I could cost them.

Anyway, a simple note included with the ticket should suffice, but it is possible you will have to stop by the court and hand deliver a note asking for it. It takes a few minutes but at least half the time it presents an instant out for me. I haven't got one on almost 5 years, but when you drive 20K to 30K miles in the city, it seems to be just a matter of time before they find some way to catch you doing something wrong.

just for a few giggles, I went back and found this little gem... its at least a top 20 for sure

I don't get many speeding tickets, but this isn't the first one. And my insurance rates are based on not getting tickets, so they take a steep increase whenever I do get a ticket.
