Unanticipated soil conditions will be claimed . Seattle tunnel partners will then put in a claim to the state for poor soils test delaying the schedule. Just the start of the cost overruns. There will be no hurry to get bertha off the couch. Time to order the preparation H by the trainload as the taxpayer is once again getting it in the a.....

Bertha is drilling the taxpayer. When it's all said and done they will name it after the politician who most effectively lobbied for the project. That will probably be Gregoire . What a fitting tribute a massive gaping hole named after her.

Let's bore a tunnel under Seattle that will eventually (if completed) have less capacity than the previous highway..... Could be the world's most expensive water slide.

Me say's it's a train wreck--really!

I don't wonder about the wisdom. There is none.

WDOT's own numbers show the difference between traffic jams on I5 and smooth sailing is only a 10% reduction in vehicles. Changing start times for non critical federal and state employees would cover that. But, there'd be no monuments built in honor of the ruling class.

I work in the SODO district and we had significant liquefaction in our basement during the last shaker. An engineering co. did a test bore and went 35 ft before they hit seashells and went another 30 ft and never hit anything solid.

While we could have done better many years ago or even today, our joke of a light rail system is nothing more than a waste of my money. Before we started this boondoggle called Sound Transit, the EIS clearly stated not a single vehicle would be removed from the roads upon completion. Transferring people from a good bus system to light rail with zero parking is a joke. Foresight? Not so much.

Bicycles are for those of us who don't hold political office.

They'll keep boring a hole in my pocket. That digging never stops.

I think it's safe to say that DOT's seemingly never-ending incompetence is the single largest contributor to the recent, ongoing trend of enormous state budget shortfalls. I'm only half joking when I say I hope Bertha's next project will be to dig a mass grave for the managers making the decisions on these catastrophically failed projects. I suppose I would settle for a few of those at the top being fired.... Whatever the means, there needs to be some degree of accountability for stuff like this.

And our lawmakers are putting together a 12 billion dollar transportation package with gas tax increases of 10-12 cents/gallon. Because they really need to address our transportation issues.....

Ineptitude is a word that comes to mind.

Meanwhile, education falls further and further off the map.... Well, at least our kids and grandkids will have nice streets to live on.

A long time and a lot. This was about making the owners of prime waterfront real estate a couple tons of money. I'd like to see how the politicians benefit from the deals they made.

$1.4 billion for 9,000 feet Hank. 50% has already been paid to the prime contractor.

Man, I need to get hold of that contractor's business plan. What little contracting work I've done I was never able to collect 50% doing only 11% of the work.
