Right on Salmo g,
I was getting ready to post same info. One side light to this info was that the sockeye were put into L. WA. because after the locks were opened and the lake's level droped the native chinook run couldn't find their river any more. Just wish sockeye would reach harvestable levels every year. Not many of us native washingtonians around here and it's helpful to educate transplants on our histroy. Great job.

Salmo G. Thanks for the post. History lessons like this don't come along too often. I am always amazed at the re-routing of rivers either naturally or by the Army Corp of Engineers. Seems that our human meddling goes back a lot farther that I ever imagined. It's a wonder we have any sustainable runs at all.

The White and Stuck are the same river. It was a law suit between King county and Pierce county that diverted the (White or Stuck) into the Puyallup not a log jam. My great grandfather was involved with diverting the White or Stuck which ever one you want to call it into the Puyallup. The spring run salmon went up the White river(Stuck) It was a great run of fish until a great portion of water was diverted into Lake Tapps for electricity!!!!! Another run of fish GONE FOREVER!!!!

Dick,
To bring you up to date on the springers that run in the White River. For more than the last 8 years the Puyallup & Muckleshoot Tribes, WDF&W and the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission have been agressivly working at and are having very favorable success rebuilding this run. The state has maintained a geneticly pure stock of springers for many years at their Minter Creek hatchery. For the past several years the group has implanted little radio transmitters into returning fish and let them go. Using radio tracking they have found fish in the Greenwater River and a couple of other tribs as well as the main stem White. They have even found some spawning in the Puyallup by Alderton & McMillin. Any fish that is not identified as "native wild stock" is retained and not allowed past PSE diversion dam near Buckley, also the site of the Muckleshoot hatchery. Around 10 years ago there were in the neighborhood of 25 - 30 returning adults to the White Rv. Last year saw the return of over 700 fish. This run is not lost forever and is slowly rebuilding. PSE installed new screens at their Lake Tapps Flume and it seems to keep outmigrant fish (smolt) out of the lake which had been a big problem. And by the way the Puyallups do not fish this run and the Muckleshoots take less than 20 for ceremonial events. The latest recent history.

Rod'n'Reel,
This is good news. I remember the stories my relatives told me how good the run (Springer) was. When I was a kid I remember seeing the Springers in the trap at the diversion dam. Hopefuly they will come back in fishable numbers.

Fascinating! I'd like to add a tiny fragment concerning the White/Stuck River. When the White River was diverted from the Green River into the Puyallup, it was channeled down the course of a pre-existing creek, Stuck Creek. Hence the confusion of names.
