what kinds of scents do you like for fall kings? Hering, shrimp, anise, crawdad, sardine? any others? I was just thinking about trying them this year and with them only a few weeks away in my local river I wanna get things together.
thanx, dcrzfitter

Excuse, just goofing around. And I wanted 2 thumbs up. Kings like scent in combos and w/ chems. Use Mike's or Pro-Cure. Two quick ones: in a 2 oz. Pro-Cure injector bottle combine- 1/2 herring oil, 1/4 sardine oil, & 1/4 squid oil (underated for Kings), leaving a little room at the top, then add a few drops of Dr. Juice Salmon concentrate, 1/8 t. sodium sulfite & 1/4 t. MSG. Next- 1/2 egg juice from curing process, 1/4 shrimp oil, 1/4 crawfish oil, & the same Dr. J., S.S. & MSG. Shake them up well now & before using on lures or injected into baits. These combos are better than any OTC I know of. I keep mine in the fridge during season & frozen off season, despite the preservatives. - Steve

Thanx,
I see I need to make a trip to Sportco and get a few goods to get that little p-u mix together.
One q. RT. Where can I find the MSG? is that a different name for something around the house or is this something I gotta go to a science store for? Oh ya and will this work on steelies? I know you say they don't like chems so maybe leave them out?
Any body els have a fav scent mix or plain scent for kings?

MSG is store bought monosodiumglutimate, used as a food flavor enhancer. My favorite is Sun Luck brand, but any quality brand is fine. - Steelhead don't like chems "as well as Kings". However, they will take chem cured eggs and scents well. But for custom steelhead scent formulas I reduce the amount of these chems and use drops of anise oil instead of the Dr. Juice. Then you're right there for the steelies, which aren't as scent finicky as Kings anyway. Good luck. - RT - Edit: Btw, use only a small amount of these oils at a time. Reapply occassionally. Too much of a good thing in this case is not a good thing!

dcrzfitter, One thing I feel that is very important is clean hands. After handling any king especially after dressing one out is to wash your hands. As a youth I pulled lines on a commercial troller. The captain I worked for demanded that after every king I wash my hands. Must have been right cause we caught lots of fish. I've done this ever since and I still catch my share. RT,
Hey I have gotten everything but the Sodium Sulfite. Where do I find it and what is it used for in it's normal uses?

dfitter - Many of the good tackle shops carry plain white powdered sodium sulfite in pastic containers. I get it at Fishermen's Marine Supply in Oregon City. This is the "star" ingredient in most commercial egg cures. It is a preservative that Kings like (they naturally like salt tastes). Not only in eggs but also scent formulas. If you really want to get tricky with a 3rd formula, in place of the sodium sulfite use about 1/3 that amount of the stronger sodium nitrate. Get the best you can find at a meat processing plant or photo developing supply store (they use it as a drying agent). Kings are moody and finicky. They may like one cure or scent one day and some others the next day. Have flexability with your eggs and scents by having some with sodium nitrate in it; because when they are in that mood, which is fairly often, it can really be deadly if used sparingly! Also, try a little Cravex Plus on your bait or lure (some tropical fish stores have it). It was developed by fish biologists to stimulate the appetite of large and small aquarium fish, so they will start eating again after going thru transfer shock. It can help the King bite in slower water areas, such as holed up tidewater Kings. - dcrzfitter, I read where you claim that you are "not a big mouth" when it comes to sharing info. You have no problem asking Q's though. I have a gig teaching people to fish. I like to help underdogs and I don't mind others catching fish anymore. The things I won't reveal are where the good secret places are, where I can catch fish in relative solitude.- RT

RT, don't understand exacly what you were saying about the big mouth thing? what I ment was I understand what Loomis Man was saying about being careful about advertiseing one of our fav. rivers. I also Am glad to teach others what I know but honestly I don't know much and even less about kings. 1/2 of what I do know of kings I have learned from reading several of you're post. I do ask questions.as I was taught it can be a great way to learn. I enjoying teaching other people to fish or like you said helping the underdog. and like you I enjoy the solitude of my Fav. spots and don't give those out. I might say what river I fish and maybe a little more detail but we all know there can be much more to it than that. The things I am finding now is just getting out and putting to use the things I learn.
Thanx for the additional info. dcrzfitter

dcrzfitter, Please exuse me for quoting you out of context. I was tired at 3:34 A.M. I sleep in short stretches so am often up at times during the night, and the quotes that stuck in my mind were the "not a big mouth" and "let's share info off the board". I re-read it tonight, and while not the best choice of words on your part for an info sharing BB "community", the thing you & Loomis Man were trying to do is not tell people "where or when" for an area that apparently doesn't get a lot of pressure anymore. That's fine and the way it should be. As one wise old fishermen once said, "tell them how but not where". Good advice, except I don't have a problem telling novices where if the place is already well known. Again, sorry I sounded critical. Tight lines, RT

RT
No problem. I agree with wise old fisherman. this a popular place that is the only reason I have mentioned what I have about it. but there are still a few places where one can get away from the crowd and those are the places I don't talk about on the BB.
I might go down again tonight and give it another shot. havn't seen anything roll in a few days. but then again I haven't been on the high tide so that might have something to do with it. Guys last night told me they talked to a guy that had a pic. of a 15# he caught the other night.
