HOLLYWOOD, S.C. (WCIV) - A homeowner wielding a gun was wounded by two Charleston County deputies as they responded to a home invasion call Thursday morning in a case of apparent mistaken identity.

The officers are white and the homeowner is black, officials said.

Officials at the scene say two intruders entered the Scott White Road home when the homeowner was in a laundry room. A neighbor called 911.

When officers arrived, the homeowner had picked up a gun to exchange gunfire with the intruders. The two alleged intruders rode away on bicycles, officials said.

The deputies ordered the homeowner to drop his gun, but officials say he did not, so deputies opened fire. He was shot multiple times, reportedly.

County officials said one male patient was taken to Medical University Hospital as a category 2 with potential life-threatening injuries. He has a gunshot wound to the neck, officials said.

State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said shortly before noon that agents were being sent to the home to investigate the shooting.

According to SLED, this is the 17th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2015. In 2014, there were 42 officer-involved shootings, officials said. This is also the second officer-involved shooting of the week in the Lowcountry.

On Wednesday, a Colleton County deputy shot a bank robbery suspect in the hand during a chase in which the suspect reportedly tried to run over the deputy in a car.

Most likely not. His crime was trying to defend his home. The "authorities" as my MIL calls them do not like you to protect yourself. They want you to abdicate that God given right to the state. Not sure what they are "authorities" of other than being small dick asshats on a power trip. Since in is in SC I will give it a 3 star rating that he was shot because he was not a vanilla face and 7 stars that he was shot because he dared to defend himself.

The only color(description) that should be in the article is of the suspects. If the homeowner is a relative match then profiling is out of El window.

Have less of a right to go home alive than the homeowner imho. They signed up knowing the risks and get paid to do it. This militaristic attitude that they get to break and kill everything in site so they can go home at night is BS. They need to show a lot more restraint and realize they work for the homeowner not the other way around.

Being a Cop is not even close to being the most dangerous job. Try driving a Taxi or working at a "stop and rob" Logging is another dangerous job.Warehouse work is a lot more dangerous.

The most important thing is they come home safe.

Years ago I was renting a house in Bellevue. My roommate woke me up saying someone was trying to break in. I grabbed my gun and dialed 911.

"911 what's your emergency?"

"My roommate just woke me up saying someone was trying to break in."

"What's your location?"

[I gave location]

"Ok. Are you armed?"

"Yes."

"Ok. Please stay on the line." After about three minutes. "Sir, are you still on the line?"

"Yes."

"Are you turning all of the lights off in your home."

"My roommate is yes."

"Ok. Please holster your weapon and be advised that a K-9 unit is approaching your house and they will be followed by a patrol car."

About a ten minute pause as all hell has broken out now with helicopters and half of BPD.

Dispatcher, "Sir are you still on the line."

"Yes."

"Ok." [pause] "is your weapon still put away?"

"Yes."

"Ok." Please be advised we have two uniforms approaching your front door now."

"Ok, I'm hanging up now."

That was like in '90 or '91. If they could be competent then you'd think they'd be able to pull it off now but noooooo! Of course I'm white though.

BTW the perp was an armed murderer who had slipped away from persuit until my call!! The dog cornered him a few houses behind mine and even though he was armed the cops were able to disarm him without shooting him dead. Not that I would of cared but kudos to BPD for making sure they protected the home owner and the cops at the same time.

I don't think things have all of a sudden gotten worse...I think that there has always been a small, but incompetent part of the overall police force.

Now that every single person in the world has a camera and video camera on their phone those clowns are caught redhanded being dipshits on a daily basis.

Everywhere that they have put bodycams on cops the public's opinion of their local police force has gone up, police brutality claims have gone down, and actual police work has been increased.

Second, we have turned most of our urban police stations into a quasi-military commandos...it should be illegal for the army to sell them fuckin military hardware...they are cops, not soldiers, and we are the public, not the enemy.

Third is what I think is the most important factor why we trust our police forces less and less each day...in spite of the fact that it is a very, very small percentage of them who are assclowns, the second the assclown acts like an assclown the entire force circles the wagons around them, thereby becoming assclowns themselves.

If cops don't like being perceived as the enemy of the public instead of the servants of the public, then they should be the most anxious to get rid of shittty cops, not the most anxious to throw up a hundred foot tall blue line and get behind it with the very jackasses that are making them look bad.

Police(normal patrol) are very far from anything that includes the word commando.

The issues are 3 fold. Media focusing on race on anything that involves a black suspect. The general public acting as if they know how to correctly do police work by stating their expert opinions (glad none of that is here ahem ahem). And of course officers losing their ethics. Values, and reasons for becoming police officers which leads to pis poor decisions and becoming jaded. Not good traits for any job dealing with the public, especially the 5% that most citizens prefer to believe don't exist

Whites make up 60% of the population, and blacks make up around 15%.

So really, whites ought to be killed by police at a 4 to 1 ratio, all other things being equal - which I'm aware they aren't.

WASHINGTON -- The FBI says that 72 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty last year, up from 56 the year before.

An additional 53 officers died in accidents, and 54,774 officers were assaulted in the line of duty.

The average age of officers killed in the line of duty was 38.

Of the 72 slayings, 23 were in arrest situations, 15 were ambushed, 11 were in traffic pursuits or stops, and nine were in tactical situations.

The report says 29 deaths happened in the South, 21 in the Midwest, 10 in the West, and 10 in the Northeast. The other two were in Puerto Rico.

Sixty-nine of the slain officers were males.

Horrible police work can devastate a lot of friends and family to the victim.
